SYMBOL & STORY

What Wheel of Fortune represents

The Wheel of Fortune represents a great current that cannot be moved by willpower alone, and the turning points that come around within that current. In life, there are times when we choose our own path and move forward, and there are also times when unexpected events—such as chance encounters or changes in our environment—alter the direction we take. This card symbolizes the moment when that "flow itself" begins to move. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, a great wheel floats in the air, surrounded by various figures. A sphinx holding a sword sits on top of the wheel, a serpent descends on one side, and a red figure rises on the other. Waite connects this constantly turning wheel with the changes of the world and human life, while giving the sphinx the meaning of "equilibrium" maintained within that movement. The letters on the wheel can be read as "TARO," and depending on their order they can also form "ROTA," the Latin word for "wheel." Hebrew letters representing the name of God and symbols associated with alchemy also appear on the wheel. These details suggest that the movement of the wheel is not merely random chance. Even if human beings cannot understand everything, there may still be some order or principle operating behind what happens. In the four corners are a winged human figure, an eagle, an ox, and a lion, each reading a book. These symbols are connected with the four living creatures described in texts such as the Book of Ezekiel, and were later associated with the four Evangelists and the four classical elements. While the wheel keeps turning, the beings in the four corners continue their studies calmly. The composition suggests that even within change, there are forms of wisdom and order that remain constant. The "fate" spoken of by the Wheel of Fortune does not simply mean that good luck will fall into your lap without you doing anything. Even when you do not yet understand why, one event can lead to another and set your life moving in an unexpected direction. Something that seemed like a coincidence may later look, in retrospect, like the very event that changed everything. This card asks you to notice such convergences and consider how you will meet the moment when the flow begins to change. In the later idea known as the "Fool's Journey," the Wheel of Fortune can be seen as the stage at which the Fool, who has been opening a path through the world by personal will, encounters a larger current that cannot be completely controlled. Viewed alongside the following card, Justice, the Wheel can represent "change you did not choose," while Justice asks, "What will you choose within the situation you have been given?"

UPRIGHT

Upright meaning

The flow is beginning to move. Receive the turning point that has come around to you.

  • A turn for the better
  • Turning point
  • Opportunity
  • Fortuitous connection
  • Going with the flow

The Wheel of Fortune upright represents a time when something that had been still begins to move, or when the direction of events starts to change. An unexpected event or chance encounter may lead to the next development. Something that did not move no matter how much effort you put into it may suddenly begin progressing once the timing is right. On an inner level, you are being asked to loosen the desire to control everything yourself and become more willing to accept change. In practical circumstances, the flow may be set in motion from outside you through a change of environment, a connection with someone, a sudden invitation, or a coincidence. In terms of action, flexibility—the ability to move when an opportunity appears—is especially important. For example, while hesitating about changing jobs, you may unexpectedly be introduced to a promising opening; you may run into someone you had lost touch with; or a person willing to help may suddenly appear in a project that had been stalled for a long time. Events like these may look accidental at first, yet they can become the trigger that changes the direction of your life. However, the Wheel of Fortune is not a promise that "good luck will continue forever from now on." The wheel keeps turning. Especially when a favorable current has arrived, value the opportunity while also accepting change itself as a natural part of life.

REVERSED

Reversed meaning

Do not force the flow to move. Bring your pace back into balance.

  • Stagnation
  • Spinning your wheels
  • Sudden change
  • Excess
  • Poor timing

The Wheel of Fortune reversed represents a state in which you are not moving in harmony with the flow. However, it does not simply mean "bad luck" or "everything has stopped." Sometimes the changing force of the upright card weakens and produces stagnation; at other times, change becomes so intense that you can no longer keep up with it. Among the reversed meanings given by Waite are elements such as "increase," "abundance," and "superfluity." For that reason, this card can indicate not only plans failing to move forward, but also schedules, work, relationships, or financial activity increasing all at once until they become difficult to manage. On an inner level, you may become too impatient, thinking, "I have to change this situation quickly." Or you may fear change so strongly that you cling to the past. In practical circumstances, repeated schedule changes, situations shifting again just when you thought they had settled, or favorable and difficult events alternating with one another can all create an unstable flow. For example, work requests may suddenly increase beyond what you can handle; in love you may repeatedly move closer and then farther apart; or a large expense may arise immediately after unexpected income. Trying to control the flow by force at such times may only exhaust you further. The reversed Wheel of Fortune is not saying, "Your luck is bad, so give up." It is asking you to check whether your own pace matches the movement of the wheel. If things are stagnant, change the way you are moving a little. If change is too intense, stop for a moment. Through that adjustment, you may be able to recover a more natural flow.

LOVE

Wheel of Fortune in love

Upright love

In love, this is a time when new movement is likely to enter the relationship. If your feelings are one-sided, chances to speak naturally with the other person may increase, or the distance between you may begin to close without being forced. Rather than trying to make the situation move through sheer effort, it may be better to receive the openings that arise. If you are already in a relationship, the two of you may move into a new stage. You may begin talking about the future, or a change in your living circumstances may deepen the relationship and create a different flow than before. Instead of fearing change, look together for a new form of the relationship that suits who you are now. For reconciliation, an unexpected trigger such as a chance meeting or message may arise. However, the important question is not simply whether you can return to the past, but whether you can create a relationship that is different from the one you had before. If you are looking for a new connection, there may be potential in places you do not normally go or in events you did not plan.

Reversed love

In love, the timing between two people may not line up well. With unrequited love, the other person may be busy when you want to speak, or distance may appear just after the atmosphere seemed to be improving. It may be difficult for the relationship to settle into a consistent rhythm. If you are already in a relationship, things may stagnate, or the opposite may happen and change may come too quickly. Discussions about the future may suddenly accelerate, or the living environment may change significantly, leaving one person's feelings unable to catch up. It is important to check whether the two of you are moving at the same pace. For reconciliation, this card can appear as a situation where it feels as though you are about to get back together but never quite do, or where separation and renewed closeness repeat themselves. If the same pattern keeps returning, consider not only, "Can we get back together?" but also, "Can we create a relationship that is different from before?" If you are looking for a new connection, the more urgently you search, the more poorly things may fit together. Conversely, you may meet so many people that you become unsure whom to trust.

FEELINGS

Wheel of Fortune in their feelings

Upright their feelings

When the Wheel of Fortune appears upright as the other person's feelings, they may sense that something in the relationship with you is beginning to move. Perhaps conversation has become easier, you have been running into each other more often, or they have started wondering why you seem to be on their mind. They may be noticing the first signs of change themselves. The feeling shown by this card is less like a quiet, settled love and more like suddenly becoming aware of someone as the current begins to shift. They may find themselves thinking, "I'd like to spend more time with you" or "I wonder where this could go," while still having no clear picture of what the relationship will eventually become. In their behavior, this may appear as using a chance encounter to start a conversation, naturally closing the distance when your schedules happen to align, or relating to you in a way that feels a little different from before. Rather than making one dramatic move, they may simply be trying not to miss the opportunities that come around. Because the Wheel of Fortune represents change itself, the feelings shown here are not necessarily fixed in their present form. What matters is that the relationship may no longer be standing in exactly the same place as before. Instead of deciding everything from one reaction, watch how the pattern changes over a slightly longer stretch of time.

Reversed their feelings

When the Wheel of Fortune appears reversed as the other person's feelings, the issue may be less that they feel nothing for you and more that they do not know how to move, or feel that the timing is not right. Interest may be present, yet work, daily life, past experience, or outside circumstances may not be lining up well enough for them to turn feeling into action. Their emotions may also fluctuate. At times they may want to move closer, while at others they become cautious and pull back. Just when the situation seems to be improving, an unexpected event may take away their emotional room or make them hesitate again. In behavior, this can appear as uneven communication, difficulty matching schedules, or opportunities to talk that never seem to continue for long. There is no need to interpret that immediately as rejection. They may be reacting more to changing circumstances than to a lack of feeling. This card suggests that now may not be the best time to force a fixed answer. Rather than focusing on each individual reaction, notice whether they continue trying to maintain some connection with you over time. When the surrounding flow becomes more settled, the way their feelings are expressed may change as well.

WORK

Wheel of Fortune in work

Upright work

In work, the Wheel of Fortune upright suggests that circumstances may begin moving in a significant way. You may be given a new role, transferred to a different department or area of responsibility, or receive recognition you did not expect. Your environment may change more than you anticipated. If you are considering a job change, well-timed events may occur, such as encountering a good opening or being introduced to an opportunity. You may even reconnect with a workplace that did not fit your circumstances before. Still, a favorable current does not mean you need to decide on momentum alone. The more clearly an opportunity appears, the more important it is to confirm whether it truly suits you. For achieving a goal, this is a time when the effort you have steadily accumulated may begin to align with circumstances and timing around you. Something that could not be moved by your effort alone may finally receive a tailwind. When that happens, do not hesitate unnecessarily—try taking one step forward.

Reversed work

In work, the Wheel of Fortune reversed can show either stagnation or an excess of busyness and change. A plan may be postponed, you may be kept waiting for a decision, or a job search may not progress as hoped. At the other extreme, work may increase all at once, responsibilities may keep changing, or organizational policy may shift repeatedly, leaving you pulled around by circumstances. When changing jobs, trying to force the timing may lead you to decide before checking the conditions carefully. Conversely, a good opportunity may appear and yet you may continue thinking, "This is not the right time," until you miss it. The key is to recognize whether you are being too cautious or moving too quickly. When working toward a goal, the issue may not be insufficient effort but that your method or timing no longer fits the present circumstances. If repeating the same approach produces no movement, try changing direction slightly. If your workload has become excessive, do not accept every request without question; setting priorities may be necessary.

MONEY

Wheel of Fortune in money

Upright money

In financial matters, this is a time when the flow of money is likely to change. An opportunity to increase income may arise, unexpected income may come in, or help may appear at the moment you need it. However, the Wheel of Fortune is less a card of "money accumulating steadily" than of the circulation of money becoming more active. Income may increase while necessary expenses increase as well. Even when the flow feels favorable, avoid spending carelessly and keep an eye on both what comes in and what goes out. For investments or major purchases, good timing may come around, but do not depend on luck alone. Confirm the details carefully. Rather than thinking only in terms of "improving your financial luck," pay attention to how money is moving through your life. That awareness will help you make better use of this card's message.

Reversed money

In financial matters, the flow of money may be difficult to stabilize. Unexpected expenses may arise or expected income may be delayed. Conversely, income may temporarily increase and lead you to increase spending along with it. If this card appears as overspending, be careful of spending impulsively because "I can only buy it now" or "I just received some money anyway." On the other hand, anxiety about unstable finances may cause you to cut even necessary expenses too severely. Check whether you have swung too far toward either extreme. With investments or major purchases, you may be especially vulnerable to being carried along by the market or by the momentum of people around you. Rather than reacting hastily to sudden profits or price movements, make decisions only within a range you understand. For now, rather than watching only whether your money is increasing or decreasing, check whether the pace of money coming in and going out actually fits your life. As you bring the flow back into balance, a sense of financial steadiness can gradually return.

RELATIONSHIPS

Wheel of Fortune in relationships

Upright relationships

In relationships, this is a time when the flow of connections begins to change. New encounters, reunions after a long time, or renewed contact with someone you had grown distant from may set relationships in motion in unexpected ways. In friendships, communication may naturally resume with someone who had drifted away, or you may make a new friend. Within the family, changes in circumstances may alter each person's role or the sense of distance between you. At work, changes in personnel or assignments may create new relationships. When this card appears, it is also important not to force human connections to remain fixed. There are times when people move closer and times when they move a little farther apart. Rather than treating change itself as something bad, look for the distance that feels natural within the flow you are in now.

Reversed relationships

In relationships, the flow of connections may be unstable. You may have difficulty seeing someone you want to meet, or your timing for communication may repeatedly miss each other. Conversely, social obligations may suddenly increase so much that you no longer know how much time to give to whom. In friendship, the distance between you and someone who used to be close may change. That does not necessarily mean the relationship has ended. Sometimes both people's circumstances have simply changed, and the old way of relating no longer fits. Within the family, repeated changes may leave everyone with less emotional room, making misunderstandings arise even over small matters. At work, frequent changes in personnel or responsibilities can make it difficult to build stable relationships. You do not need to keep every relationship in exactly the same form. Some connections move closer, while others move a little farther away. What matters is finding a distance that does not place unreasonable strain on you as those relationships change.

YES OR NO

Yes or No for Wheel of Fortune

Upright judgment

Judgment
Yes
Reason
The Wheel of Fortune upright shows the current beginning to move and unexpected opportunities or turning points becoming more likely. Rather than controlling everything by your own effort, receiving the opportunity that comes around can carry the situation toward Yes.
What could change the answer
If you let opportunities pass because you are afraid of change, the favorable current can weaken. If you stay flexible and move when the timing is right, the possibility of Yes becomes stronger.

Reversed judgment

Judgment
Not yet
Reason
Reversed, the Wheel of Fortune does not necessarily mean that the overall flow is bad. It more often shows poor timing, misalignment, or temporary stagnation. Trying to force a decision or result now can lead to spinning your wheels, so the reading is to wait for the timing to improve.
What could change the answer
The reading changes when circumstances settle and the points that repeatedly failed to line up begin fitting together more naturally. Rather than continuing to push, wait for signs that the flow itself is returning before making your move.

MESSAGE FROM THE CARD

Advice from Wheel of Fortune

Upright

Something may already be beginning to move around you. It may not take exactly the form you imagined. You do not have to make everything unfold according to your own plan. Chance events and unexpected changes can sometimes conceal the entrance to a new path. A small invitation, an unexpected encounter, a schedule that suddenly changes—do not dismiss such things immediately as "just coincidence." Give them a little attention. Right now, rather than trying to force the wheel to turn yourself, sense the flow that has already begun moving and choose the step you can take within it.

Reversed

If things do not seem to be progressing the way you want, you do not have to force the wheel to turn. And if one change after another is happening so quickly that you cannot settle, you do not have to keep up with everything. What matters is noticing whether the current flow is too fast, too slow, or whether you are putting your energy in a direction that does not match it. When things are still, there are things you can prepare. When the flow is intense, there are things you can let go of. Both are part of the time leading toward the next change. The Wheel of Fortune keeps turning. You do not need to look at your present circumstances and decide that they will remain this way forever. Relax your grip a little, observe the flow, and wait for the timing when you can move naturally.
