SYMBOL & STORY

What The Hermit represents

The Hermit is a card about stepping away from the noise of the outer world and facing the truth and wisdom that exist within yourself. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, an old man dressed in gray stands on a high place, holding a staff in one hand and raising a lantern in the other. No other people are visible around him, and his figure conveys both solitude and stillness. Inside the lantern shines a six-pointed star. Waite himself describes a "star" shining within the lantern. In later tarot interpretations, this light is often read as a symbol of inner wisdom, spiritual illumination, and truth that has been verified through one's own experience. The staff suggests the experience and spiritual support that have sustained him along a long journey. Because of the name "The Hermit," it may be easy to imagine someone who is still searching for an answer. Yet Waite did not describe this card merely as a card of seeking; he also described it as one of attainment. The old man has already reached a high place and raises his light there. His posture seems not to suggest that he is keeping the truth for himself, but that he is showing those who come after him, "There is a path that reaches this far." For that reason, The Hermit does not simply mean thinking alone. It also represents gaining experience, finding an answer in your own way, and using that wisdom to illuminate your own path or someone else's. It can appear as a teacher, senior colleague, adviser, or specialist who guides others quietly from a place that does not draw much attention. If the Major Arcana is read as a single story, after learning how to live with one's instincts and emotions in Strength, The Hermit turns even more deeply inward. Then, in the following Wheel of Fortune, one encounters a larger flow that cannot be controlled by personal will alone. This sequence was not explicitly presented by Waite himself, but in modern tarot it can be useful to view The Hermit as the stage where you confirm your own inner axis before meeting a major turning point in life. What The Hermit teaches is not to take someone else's correct answer and make it your own unchanged, but to carry a light whose truth you have confirmed for yourself. That light does not need to illuminate the entire road. If it shows you only the next step from where you stand now, that can be enough to keep moving forward.

UPRIGHT

Upright meaning

Wisdom found in stillness will illuminate your next step.

  • Introspection
  • Careful judgment
  • Wisdom
  • Spiritual maturity
  • Guidance

The Hermit upright represents a time to take a little distance from outside voices and quietly confirm your own thoughts and experiences. Rather than rushing to an answer or moving simply to match the people around you, it is important to look at questions such as, "How do I really feel?" and "What do I truly want to value?" On an inner level, you may no longer be satisfied with superficial answers and may be trying to understand the essence of the matter. You may spend more time alone, but that does not necessarily mean loneliness. In quiet time, you are organizing your thoughts and developing an answer that is genuinely your own. In practical circumstances, this is better suited to research, study, preparation, and careful consideration than to making a dramatic move. However, The Hermit is not a card of "searching forever." If you have already thought deeply and accumulated experience for a long time, it may mean, "The answer is already within you." It is important not only to acquire new knowledge, but also to recognize the wisdom you have already gained. In terms of action, take the time you need rather than rushing to a conclusion. If there is something you cannot see by yourself, it may help more to listen to one trusted, experienced person or specialist than to gather opinions from many people. Conversely, you yourself may become an adviser or guide and pass on what you have learned to someone else. For example, if you are uncertain about your future path, consider not what is most highly valued by society, but what you can imagine continuing for a long time. If you are uncertain in a relationship, instead of watching only the other person's words and actions, examine how you yourself feel within that relationship. And if you already feel that you have thought enough, trusting the lantern's light and taking one small step is also an expression of The Hermit upright.

REVERSED

Reversed meaning

Rebalance the inner and outer worlds, and choose the distance you truly need.

  • Isolation
  • Lack of introspection
  • Overthinking
  • Dependence on outside opinions
  • Return to society

The Hermit reversed represents a state in which the balance of "facing yourself" has become distorted. This can appear in more than one way. One possibility is that the introspection and solitude of the upright card have become excessive, and you have withdrawn too far into your own world. The more you think, the deeper your confusion becomes. You may become unable to accept other people's views, or distance yourself from others more than necessary. You may believe, "If I think just a little longer, the answer will come," while circling the same place again and again. The other possibility is the opposite. You may actually need to stop and check your own feelings, but instead keep yourself busy, keep meeting people, or continually seek the opinions of others so that you do not have to face yourself. If you are constantly asking, "Someone please tell me the answer," yet none of the advice feels right, perhaps what you need is not more outside opinions but time to hear your own voice. For someone who has already thought enough and spent a long time alone, this card can also be read as, "It is time to finish the Hermit's period and return outside." You may have spent a long time worrying over something, and the stage of thinking alone may now be ending. It may be time to engage with people again or take real action. For these reasons, The Hermit reversed does not simply mean "isolation." The reading depends on the person's situation: are you going too far inward, avoiding looking inward at all, or have you already reflected enough and are now ready to return outward? On an inner level, you may think so much that you no longer know the answer, or you may be avoiding something you do not want to think about. In practical circumstances, the problem may be not only a lack of advice or information, but also too much information and too many opinions, causing you to lose your own judgment. In terms of action, do not automatically decide, "I need to think about this alone even more." If you have already struggled with it alone for a long time, talking to someone or taking a small action may be what you need. Conversely, if you are confused because you have been listening only to other people's views, it may help to shut out information for a while and spend time thinking by yourself. The reversed Hermit is not forcing a simple choice between "go outward" and "go inward." It asks you to notice which direction you have leaned too far toward and restore a healthier distance between your inner world and the outside world.

LOVE

The Hermit in love

Upright love

When The Hermit appears upright in a love reading, the theme is less about rapid development and more about taking time to understand your feelings deeply. Beneath surface wishes such as "I want a partner" or "I want this person to notice me," you may need to ask what kind of relationship you truly want. With unrequited love, rather than chasing the other person's reactions too closely, take time to learn who they really are while also confirming your own feelings. The other person may be cautious or someone who values time alone. Rather than trying to move the relationship forward suddenly, building trust little by little may feel more natural. If you are already in a relationship, having separate time can sometimes deepen the bond. Even if conversation or interaction temporarily decreases, that alone does not necessarily mean affection has disappeared. At the same time, do not keep everything inside and leave important things unsaid. Once your thoughts are organized, communicate them sincerely. For reconciliation, this is a time to reconsider whether you want to return simply because you feel lonely, or because you have a genuine reason to build a different relationship than before. If you have thought carefully about what happened in the past and learned something from it, that experience itself can become the lantern that illuminates your next decision. If you are looking for a new connection, you may find greater potential in places where values or knowledge can be shared—such as hobbies, study, or work—than in flashy environments crowded with people. The Hermit can also symbolize someone emotionally mature, calm, or older.

Reversed love

When The Hermit appears reversed in a love reading, pay attention less to the distance between the two of you itself and more to how you are handling that distance. With unrequited love, you may keep thinking about the other person's feelings alone and end up seeing the person in your imagination more than the real person. No matter how long you ask yourself, "Maybe that attitude meant this," or "Maybe they think I am a nuisance," you still cannot know what is truly in their heart. Natural greetings or short conversations—small moments of contact with the real person—may help more. On the other hand, you may be paying so much attention to their reactions that you no longer know what you yourself want. Before collecting more opinions from friends or more information about love, ask yourself, "What kind of relationship do I want with this person?" If you are already in a relationship, you may be keeping everything inside and no longer communicating your feelings. From the other person's perspective, they may not know what you are thinking and may begin to feel distance. Conversely, this card can also appear when your attention is too focused on being together and you have lost your own time. Ask which is currently missing: closeness with the other person, or time for yourself. For reconciliation, this card can show that it is time to move out of a state where you only keep thinking about the past. Whether you move toward reconciliation or toward a new path, the important thing is not to replay the past endlessly in your mind, but to connect what you learned from it to your actions now. If you are looking for a new connection and have been avoiding relationships too much, going out a little more may change the flow. Conversely, if you keep seeking new people only to fill loneliness, you may need time to stop and reflect.

FEELINGS

The Hermit in their feelings

Upright their feelings

When The Hermit appears upright as the other person's feelings, they may be quietly thinking about their relationship with you. Even if affection is present, they are more likely to want to understand their own true feelings before expressing them through momentum or impulse. They may be looking inward and asking themselves, "What do I want this relationship to become?" or "Do I currently have the emotional room to become deeply involved with someone?" Because of that, they can appear distant on the surface. The Hermit's distance is not necessarily rejection. For someone who needs time alone or who takes a long time to put feelings into words, caution can come precisely because they are thinking seriously. They may even replay your words repeatedly afterward. Still, thinking for a long time is not the same as having the intention to move the relationship forward. It is important to see whether they continue to maintain at least some real point of contact. Respect quiet time, but do not decide what they feel entirely through imagination.

Reversed their feelings

When The Hermit appears reversed as the other person's feelings, they may be unable to organize what they feel and may be withdrawing more than necessary. Even if they are conscious of you, they may keep thinking "I don't know what to do" until they begin avoiding the connection itself. They may also have spent so much time thinking alone that they are projecting their own fears and imagination onto you instead of seeing the real person. They may decide, "I would only be a bother" or "They would never understand me," and create distance before checking whether that is actually true. In the opposite direction, they may genuinely need time alone but fear loneliness so much that they seek a relationship merely to fill the emptiness. It is important to distinguish whether the feeling is directed toward you as an individual or toward escaping solitude. With this card, distance does not prove that feelings are absent, and silence does not prove that deep feelings are present. What matters is gradually restoring real interaction and observing what the other person chooses from there. Once they step outside a closed loop of thought, their true feelings can become easier to see.

WORK

The Hermit in work

Upright work

When The Hermit appears upright in a work reading, deepening your expertise, thinking carefully, and making use of your experience become important. This is a good time for digging deeply into one field or concentrating alone on high-quality work rather than trying to display results in a flashy way. In your current work, it can show that your own methods and standards of judgment are becoming well established. The card is especially compatible with work requiring experience or specialist knowledge, such as research, analysis, design, education, technical professions, and advisory work. You may also realize that knowledge you considered ordinary is actually valuable to the people around you. If you are considering a job change, rather than comparing conditions and deciding in a hurry, think about, "What do I want to deepen?" and "What kind of work could I continue with genuine conviction?" On the other hand, if you have already considered the matter thoroughly, you may have reached the stage where continuing to gather information is less useful than trusting the answer you have reached. At work, you may receive advice from an experienced senior or specialist, or you may become the one who guides junior colleagues or coworkers. The Hermit's guidance is not about forcing an answer onto someone else. It is about showing the light they need and supporting them so they can walk the path themselves.

Reversed work

When The Hermit appears reversed in a work reading, you may have narrowed your perspective by thinking too much on your own. If you cannot ask for help even when you do not understand something, cling too strongly to your own method, or continue preparing because you are afraid to fail, borrowing wisdom from the people around you may provide a breakthrough. However, the opposite can also happen: you may be listening to so many opinions around you that you can no longer make your own judgment. A supervisor, coworkers, family members, and the internet may all tell you different things, leaving you even more uncertain about what to choose. In such cases, rather than gathering more information, you need to clarify what matters most to you. If you are considering a job change, instead of searching only for "the best company," confirm what kind of way of working you actually want. This card can also appear when you continue studying or preparing but never move into practice. If you have already acquired enough knowledge, trying something on a small scale may reveal what you need next more clearly than waiting until everything feels perfect. Conversely, if you have been moving constantly on momentum alone, this card recommends stopping. In the middle of busyness, check whether you have lost sight of your original purpose and direction. With The Hermit reversed, the important thing is not simply to "try harder," but to discern whether what you need now is thought, consultation, or action.

MONEY

The Hermit in money

Upright money

When The Hermit appears upright in a financial reading, it is more important to think calmly about money and take a long-term view than to aim for large profits. This is a good time to review income and expenses and determine what you truly need. In terms of income, specialist knowledge and experience developed over many years may become a source of value. Rather than earning a large amount all at once, this card suggests building greater stability little by little by accumulating skill and knowledge. With spending, rather than following trends around you, asking yourself, "Do I really need this?" can lead to purchases you genuinely feel comfortable with. In investing as well, caution helps: instead of deciding from other people's recommendations or momentum, choose something whose structure you understand for yourself. For saving and asset building, a steady method with a clear future purpose is well suited to this card. Rather than simply hoarding money, think about both "What am I saving this for?" and "What do I want to spend money on?" Doing so can bring greater calm to your relationship with money.

Reversed money

When The Hermit appears reversed in a financial reading, your judgment about money may be leaning too far either inward or outward. You may be carrying anxiety alone, saving more than necessary, or becoming afraid of spending money itself. Preparing for the future is important, but if anxiety alone is the reason for protecting money, even your present life can become overly constrained. Conversely, you may be getting swept around by outside information without thinking for yourself. Be cautious about making investments or large purchases only because "everyone is buying it," "someone said it would make money," or "I was told I would lose out if I did not buy now." With investing, both extremes are possible: acting without enough knowledge, or researching so much that you can never decide. Identify which side you are leaning toward, and make decisions only within a range you genuinely understand. In terms of income, you may be undervaluing your own abilities. Knowledge and experience accumulated over many years may hold value that you yourself have not recognized. On the other hand, if you are clinging only to your own judgment, bringing in the opinion of a specialist or experienced person may help you notice an unexpected blind spot.

RELATIONSHIPS

The Hermit in relationships

Upright relationships

When The Hermit appears upright in a relationship reading, it is a time to value calm relationships with people you trust rather than maintaining many shallow connections. Time alone may also be necessary, but not as a way of rejecting people. It can be a healthy distance that helps you organize yourself so you can face others more sincerely. In friendship, a bond with someone who understands you deeply can matter more than frequent contact. In family relationships, rather than exchanging words while emotions are running high, organizing your feelings first can lead to a calmer conversation. The Hermit can also show becoming an adviser to someone. You may receive guidance from a person with greater experience, or you may listen to someone and help them find an answer that is their own. However, you do not need to carry everything alone. The Hermit holds a lantern that illuminates the path; he does not carry other people up the mountain. Let the other person be responsible for their own life, and remain involved only within a range that is healthy for you. This kind of distance is one of the mature forms of connection taught by the card.

Reversed relationships

When The Hermit appears reversed in a relationship reading, your sense of distance from the people around you may have become unbalanced. One possibility is that you have moved too far away from people. You may close off relationships because you think, "I do not want to trouble anyone," or "No one would understand me anyway." Even with friends or family, if you remain out of contact for a long time, the other person cannot know your feelings even if you do not dislike them. You do not need to force a deep conversation, but small points of contact—such as a greeting or a brief message—may help restore the connection. The opposite is also possible: you may be seeking connection too intensely. You may feel anxious when alone, always need to be with someone, or hand your own decisions over to other people. If "What will this person think?" becomes your only standard, you may lose track of what you yourself feel. Also, asking many people for advice every time you are troubled can create so many differing opinions that you become even more confused. In such moments, spending a little time alone and checking your own feelings may be necessary. If this card appears for someone who has been isolated for a long time, it can also be read as, "It may be time to return among people." The period of organizing things alone may have served its purpose, and you may now be ready to accept new connections. The Hermit reversed is not asking the simple question, "Should you get closer to people or move away?" By reconsidering, "Is the distance I have now comfortable and sincere for me?" you can begin to create relationships that do not require unnecessary strain.

YES OR NO

Yes or No for The Hermit

Upright judgment

Judgment
Not yet
Reason
The Hermit upright represents a period for thinking deeply within yourself rather than seeking the answer outside. Instead of demanding an immediate conclusion or action, there are things that still need to be examined, so the reading is Not yet.
What could change the answer
The reading changes once time alone has clarified the answer and priorities that truly matter. When introspection is complete and a concrete next step can be chosen, the answer can move clearly toward either Yes or No.

Reversed judgment

Judgment
Unclear
Reason
The Hermit reversed can show introspection becoming excessive and turning into isolation or repetitive thinking. Because the person's present perception itself may be distorted, there is not enough contact with reality to decide Yes or No confidently.
What could change the answer
The reading changes when they stop thinking alone and reconnect with trusted opinions or real information. As isolation eases and contact with reality returns, the answer becomes easier to see.

MESSAGE FROM THE CARD

Advice from The Hermit

Upright

Step away from outside voices for just a little while. A path someone else says is correct, or an answer society treats as normal, is not necessarily the right one for you. Look back on what you have already experienced, what you have thought about repeatedly, and the moments that felt wrong or, conversely, deeply convincing. You are not standing in a place where you know nothing. You have already walked a long road. The wisdom you gained along the way can become the light that illuminates you now. You do not have to see every answer. The Hermit's lantern does not illuminate every corner of the world either. If you can see where to place your next step, that is enough. And if you feel you have already reached one answer, that wisdom may not be yours alone. There is no need to impose it on anyone, but one day your experience may gently light the way for someone else.

Reversed

What you need now is not simply to be alone, nor simply to go out among people. First, check which direction you may have leaned too far toward. If you have spent a long time thinking alone, it may be time to take your lantern and step outside. Talk to someone you trust, try one small action, or touch the real world again. Doing so may reveal answers that could not be found by thinking alone. Conversely, if the words of others and the busyness around you have made you lose sight of your own feelings, create a little quiet time. Instead of asking for someone else's correct answer, ask yourself, "What do I want to do?" And if you feel that you have already thought enough, you do not need to keep searching forever. The Hermit's lantern does not illuminate the entire road at once. It is enough if you can see the next step from where you are now. There is a time to turn inward and a time to step outward. Move between both, and find the distance that feels right for you.
