SYMBOL & STORY

What Strength represents

The Strength card does not represent the power to force something into submission. It represents the ability to accept the great energy within yourself and use it in the right way. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, a woman dressed in white gently places her hands around the jaws of a large lion. The lion is often interpreted as a symbol of the powerful and untamed forces within human beings: instinct, desire, anger, passion, and vitality. The woman does not hurt the lion or forcibly restrain it. Instead, she faces it calmly and quietly guides its strength. This is where one of the most important meanings of the card can be found. Emotions and desires are not bad in themselves. What matters is neither being controlled by them nor crushing them down, but accepting them as part of yourself and learning to direct them toward something better. The chain of flowers that appears to connect the woman and the lion is also an impressive symbol. The beast is not bound by an iron chain; it is guided by flowers. This suggests handling power not through force, but through harmony and understanding that arise from within. Above the woman's head is the infinity symbol, which also appears on The Magician. It is regarded as a symbol of inexhaustible spiritual strength and vast unseen potential. Arthur Waite clearly distinguished this card from mere physical strength. In his explanation, it is deeply connected with a higher nature guiding human passion, as well as with spiritual power, courage, and energy. In modern tarot reading, Strength is also often associated with confidence, self-acceptance, emotional regulation, compassionate leadership, and the capacity to hold space for strong feelings. If The Chariot represents the power to break through the outer world and move ahead, Strength can be seen as the power to face the impulses and emotions within yourself and turn them into allies. Anger, anxiety, love, desire, and passion are all lions that live within you. The story of this card is not about making them your enemies, but about learning how to live with and guide them.

UPRIGHT

Upright meaning

Guide the passion within you with both gentleness and strength.

  • Inner strength
  • Passion
  • Courage
  • Self-control
  • Compassion

Strength upright represents a state in which you can calmly handle the emotions and passions within yourself. You do not run wild simply because you have momentum, and you do not run away simply because you feel afraid. This is a time when you can make good use of the energy inside you. On an inner level, it represents resilience that does not easily break in the face of difficulty, and courage that allows you to take another step even while carrying fear. You do not need to be overflowing with confidence. True strength is shown in being able to move forward without losing yourself, even when doubt or anxiety remains. In practical circumstances, this can be a period when strong energy is in motion. In love, it may appear as powerful affection or passion; in work, as motivation and drive; and in relationships, as strong feelings between you and another person. However, the card does not emphasize releasing that power without restraint. It emphasizes learning to handle it well. In terms of action, it is more important to move forward while observing the other person's response than to push aggressively. If you feel angry, pause and think before throwing that anger at someone. If your feelings are strong, respect the other person's freedom. This kind of self-control can ultimately become a far greater strength. Strength shows its power in situations such as staying calm during difficult negotiations, continuing a long-term effort, or building trust patiently in love without rushing the other person. When you are challenging yourself, it is also important not to shrink back with the thought, "I cannot do this," but to trust the potential within yourself and learn how to use it.

REVERSED

Reversed meaning

Do not suppress your power; reconsider how you are using it.

  • Loss of confidence
  • Emotional outbursts
  • Misuse of power
  • Reaching the limit of endurance
  • Domination

Strength reversed shows a state in which the energy represented by the upright card is no longer being handled well. Broadly speaking, this can appear in two directions. One is a weakening of strength. You may have lost confidence, feel unable to summon your energy, be too afraid to act, or feel overwhelmed by emotion. The strength exists within you, but you may not currently know how to access or use it. The other possibility is that the strength is coming out too forcefully. You may throw your anger at someone, try to make the other person behave the way you want, intimidate others, or insist on your own opinion so strongly that your power becomes excessive. On an inner level, your feelings may have become difficult to contain. Anger, anxiety, jealousy, or impatience may be growing so large that you no longer know what to do with them. The opposite can also happen: you may have been holding your feelings back for too long and be approaching your limit. In practical circumstances, the balance of power in a relationship may be breaking down, or you may be getting pushed around by someone forceful. Conversely, you may be trying to control another person, making the relationship painful. In terms of action, it is important to stop once and organize your emotions rather than trying to force your way through. Reversed Strength does not simply mean "you have no strength." It can also mean that strength is present, but the way you are using it needs to be reconsidered.

LOVE

Strength in love

Upright love

When Strength appears upright in a love reading, it represents a love in which strong affection or passion is present, but those feelings are handled with care. Even if you are deeply attracted to someone, it is important not to force your feelings onto them, but to consider the distance between you and the right timing. With unrequited love, your feelings may have become quite strong. You may feel increasingly drawn to the other person and want to get closer. Even so, rather than rushing to demand an answer, the relationship is more likely to grow if you build a sense of safety little by little. Both passion and self-restraint matter. If you are already in a relationship, the card can show strong affection and a powerful bond. Even when differences of opinion or emotional moments arise, you may be able to overcome them by trying to understand rather than hurt each other. Sometimes the card is also read as strong physical attraction or sexual chemistry. But the deeper task is not merely to feel that passion, but to grow it into trust and consideration. For reconciliation, strong feelings may still remain. However, rather than trying to return through momentum alone, you need the inner strength to face the problems of the past and avoid repeating them. If you are seeking a new relationship, Strength may indicate a connection with someone bright, energetic, and strong at heart. It can also be a time when your own natural confidence allows your attractiveness to come through more clearly.

Reversed love

When Strength appears reversed in a love reading, strong feelings can easily turn into anxiety, jealousy, attachment, or a desire to control. With unrequited love, you may be so concerned about the other person's reactions that every word or gesture affects your mood. Precisely because you care so much, you may want an answer quickly or try too hard to confirm the other person's feelings. On the other hand, you may lack confidence and feel unable to do anything to close the distance. If you are already in a relationship, emotional conflict may become more likely. You may want to restrict the other person, speak too strongly because you want them to understand you, or, conversely, suppress yourself too much by constantly adjusting to them. The balance of power may have become unstable. For reconciliation, acting only from the strength of your feelings can make it easier to repeat the same problems. It may be necessary to slow down and ask whether you are trying to return because of loneliness or attachment alone. When seeking a new relationship, you may have lost confidence and find it difficult to show your natural attractiveness. Or you may exhaust yourself by trying too hard to appear bigger or more impressive than you really feel.

FEELINGS

Strength in their feelings

Upright their feelings

When Strength appears upright as the other person's feelings, they may feel strong interest and attraction toward you while still trying to handle those emotions with care. Rather than approaching you on impulse, they may want to respect your feelings and gradually nurture the connection. Even if romantic feeling is strong, a cautious person may not show it openly. Instead, it can appear in calm behavior: waiting without rushing you, supporting you when you need help, or listening without becoming overly emotional. They may also feel that you are someone around whom they can relax and perhaps show vulnerable parts of themselves. The attraction is not only about excitement; trust and attraction may be growing together. Holding emotion in check is not the same as having no feelings. If the other person understands their emotions and is choosing to treat you gently rather than merely suppressing themselves, this can be read as mature affection. The more time passes, the easier their true feelings may become to see.

Reversed their feelings

When Strength appears reversed as the other person's feelings, their emotions may be too strong for them to handle well, or they may lack the confidence to express what they feel. The more conscious they become of you, the more tense they may feel, making even ordinary conversation difficult. Jealousy and anxiety can also mix into the feeling. If they worry too much about losing you to someone else or about how you see them, they may seek reassurance too strongly, or withdraw before they can be hurt. If the other person is exhausted, they may simply lack the emotional energy to nurture a relationship even when affection is present. The issue may not be a lack of feeling, but that they are using most of their strength simply to support themselves. For now, do not reach a conclusion from one temporary reaction. It may be more useful to notice how they change once they feel safer again. Rather than pressuring them to prove what they feel, maintaining a distance where both of you can be natural can make their true feelings easier to express.

WORK

Strength in work

Upright work

When Strength appears upright in a work reading, perseverance, courage, drive, and emotional stability are likely to be recognized. Even in difficult work or situations carrying heavy responsibility, you may be able to respond calmly without giving up easily. This can also be a period when your motivation toward work is increasing, and feelings such as "I want to try more" or "I want to grow" become stronger. If you are considering a job change, you may feel a stronger desire to test your abilities. Conditions matter, but whether you can feel a sense of purpose in the work may become equally important. When pursuing a goal, persistence is more important than momentum alone. Rather than trying to produce a result in a short burst, continuing one step at a time can lead to something much larger. In the workplace, you may find yourself between an emotional person and someone who is difficult to deal with. Staying calm rather than responding just as forcefully can ultimately work in your favor. In terms of evaluation, trust may come not only from flashy achievements but from your ability to remain steady and dependable even in difficult situations. At the same time, having strength does not mean you need to carry everything. Understanding your own limits and using your energy accordingly is also an important part of this card.

Reversed work

When Strength appears reversed in a work reading, it may indicate low motivation, stress, emotional reactions, or using too much force. If your workload is heavy and you have continued pushing yourself beyond what is reasonable, fatigue may already be accumulating. Rather than telling yourself, "I can still do more," rest or an adjustment of responsibilities may be necessary. On the other hand, you may be relying too strongly on your position or authority. If you are being harsh with subordinates or coworkers, or moving ahead without listening to other people's opinions, it is worth checking whether your strength has begun to feel like pressure to those around you. With a job change, the card can appear both when you lack confidence and cannot move, and when you are trying to leap out of your current environment through momentum alone. When pursuing a goal, relying on willpower alone can easily lead to exhaustion. Changing your approach, asking someone for advice, or resting are also valid options. In terms of evaluation, you may be underestimating yourself too much. Conversely, overconfidence may be creating a gap between how you see yourself and how the people around you experience you. In workplace relationships, be particularly aware of hierarchy, pressure, and relationships in which one person tries to dominate the other.

MONEY

Strength in money

Upright money

When Strength appears upright in a financial reading, it represents being able to handle your desires and anxieties about money calmly. In terms of income, effort and initiative are more likely to lead to results. Greater motivation toward work may lead to increased earnings or new opportunities. However, rather than indicating a sudden windfall, the card points more toward creating stability by continuing to use your abilities over time. With spending, even when you want something, you may be able to pause before buying and consider whether you truly need it instead of deciding from impulse alone. For investments or major purchases, it is important to maintain sound judgment even when you feel strong momentum. The more strongly you want a profit, the more valuable it is to slow down and check carefully. For saving, a plan that balances restraint with allowing yourself some things you enjoy is more likely to last than severe self-denial. Desire and anxiety around money are not bad in themselves. Depending on how you handle them, they can become either a powerful source of motivation or a burden.

Reversed money

When Strength appears reversed in a financial reading, your desires or anxieties about money may be difficult to control. In terms of income, anxiety may tempt you into unreasonable side jobs or risky investments. Conversely, you may lose confidence and become unable to take the actions that could improve your income. With spending, be careful of stress-driven impulse purchases. Repeatedly telling yourself, "Just this once," can eventually become a burden. In investing, watch for emotional decisions such as taking excessive risks to recover a loss, rushing after profits, or being carried away by someone else's forceful words. This card can also appear when money is being used to control another person, or when you yourself feel trapped in a difficult relationship because of financial power. With saving, overly strict restraint can produce a backlash. Rather than suppressing every desire, create a system you can continue without unreasonable strain.

RELATIONSHIPS

Strength in relationships

Upright relationships

When Strength appears upright in a relationship reading, it suggests that you can relate well even to someone who brings out strong emotions in you. In friendships, you may have enough emotional room to accept another person's flaws or emotional side without immediately rejecting them. Within the family, even when emotions are likely to clash, the relationship can become calmer if you first try to understand the other person's circumstances rather than moving directly into opposition. At work, this can be a time when you are able to respond calmly even to someone with a strong personality or someone who is difficult to handle. However, kindness is not the same as enduring everything. Real strength is not endlessly adapting yourself to another person; it is maintaining the relationship while also respecting your own thoughts and needs. Depending on the situation, this card can also show strong rivalry or powerful feelings between you and someone else. Even then, calming yourself rather than meeting force with force can help improve the situation.

Reversed relationships

When Strength appears reversed in a relationship reading, the balance of power between you and another person may be breaking down. In friendship, you may be suppressing yourself by adapting too much, being unable to say no, or worrying excessively about the other person's mood. Conversely, you may be pushing your own views too strongly or trying to make the other person behave as you want. Within the family, emotional conflict may become more frequent. The stronger the feeling of "Why won't you understand me?", the stronger your words may become. At work, this card may point to stress involving a controlling person, hierarchy, or an unequal relationship. It can also suggest that you yourself are coming across too strongly toward someone else. If misunderstandings or friction are present, organize what you are feeling before trying to change the other person. Taking some distance or deciding to stop enduring everything can both be perfectly valid choices when necessary.

YES OR NO

Yes or No for Strength

Upright judgment

Judgment
Yes
Reason
Strength upright represents the ability to steady a situation through patience and self-control rather than force. If you can face the situation carefully without rushing, even difficulties can be worked through in the direction of Yes.
What could change the answer
The condition is not suppressing emotion, but accepting it and handling it well. The reading weakens when patience turns into force or impatience, but the Yes becomes stronger when trust can be nurtured steadily.

Reversed judgment

Judgment
Not yet
Reason
Strength reversed represents a lack of confidence or emotional room, making feelings harder to handle steadily. If you force the situation now, anxiety or impatience may disturb the result, so time is needed to restore inner balance first.
What could change the answer
The reading can move toward Yes by resting, acknowledging anxiety or impulses, and gradually rebuilding confidence. Trying to force the result moves it toward No; gentle consistency is the key.

MESSAGE FROM THE CARD

Advice from Strength

Upright

There is more strength within you than you may imagine. It is not strength for overpowering someone else. It is strength for facing the powerful emotions inside you—anger, anxiety, passion, desire—and learning to use them as part of your own life force. You do not need to be afraid of having strong feelings. Deep attraction, frustration, anger, and the desire to accomplish something are all parts of your vitality. But you can choose where to direct that energy. You do not need to bind the lion with an iron chain. Begin by listening to your own heart and understanding what it is asking for. Do not fear your strength, but do not let it toss you around either. Learning to use it without being controlled by it is the strength you need now.

Reversed

This may be a time to reconsider how you are using the strength within you. Some people may feel as though they do not have enough power. Others may have pushed themselves so hard that they have used up too much of it. Still others may be overwhelmed by strong emotions and feel an urge to force someone or something to go the way they want. In every case, the important thing is not to get rid of your strength. It is to adjust the way you use it so that it becomes gentler toward both yourself and the people around you. Anger, anxiety, and desire are all important forms of energy within you. You do not need to suppress them by force. But you also do not need to hand them complete control. Pause for a moment and ask yourself, "What am I really trying to protect?" and "What am I truly asking for?" You do not need to defeat the lion. Look instead for a way to live with its strength skillfully once again.
