SYMBOL & STORY

What Five of Cups represents

The Five of Cups represents a state in which your attention is focused on what has been lost or on things that did not turn out as you had hoped. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, a figure wearing a black cloak looks down at three cups that have fallen to the ground. Their spilled contents call to mind lost affection, expectations, trust, or hope. The figure's posture conveys a sadness and regret so deep that it is not easy to simply change how they feel. Yet behind the figure, two cups still remain standing. Farther away there is a river, a bridge crossing it, and a building beyond. The image quietly reminds us that the loss directly in front of us is not the whole world. There are still things that remain, and there are still places to which we may be able to return. Arthur Waite associated this card with loss, disappointment, and a state in which something still remains. Later tarot interpretations expanded this into a psychological reading: after fully experiencing grief, a person may eventually begin to notice the possibilities that are still left. Cups are the suit of emotion, affection, and human connection. The Five can be understood as a stage where the emotional harmony that existed before has been disrupted and disappointment or pain must be experienced. If the Four of Cups represents a state in which the heart is closed and it is difficult to notice what is right in front of you, then in the Five of Cups you are looking directly at something that has truly been lost and at feelings that have been hurt. Then, in the Six of Cups, memory, kindness, and what you have received from the past begin once again to support the heart. For that reason, the Five of Cups is not simply "a card of sad events." It says that grief deserves time to be felt, and that there is no need to force yourself to become positive before you are ready. It also suggests that beyond that time of mourning, there may come a moment when you begin to notice what still remains.

UPRIGHT

Upright meaning

Beyond the grief, there is still hope that remains.

  • Disappointment, regret, sense of loss, lingering attachment, remaining hope

The Five of Cups upright represents a state in which your attention is strongly drawn toward what you have lost or toward events that did not go well. It often appears when you feel as though a hole has opened inside your heart because the result was not what you expected, a relationship changed, or you regret a decision you made. On an emotional level, sadness and regret may become so large that you lose the space to look at the possibilities that still exist. You may repeatedly replay moments from the past, thinking, "If only I had done that differently," or, "Why did things have to turn out that way?" In practical circumstances, you may be experiencing some kind of loss, such as a breakup, failure, disappointment, or a change of plans. However, that does not necessarily mean that everything has been lost. You may simply be in a state where all you can see are the three cups that have fallen, while the two cups still standing behind you remain unnoticed. In terms of action, there is no need to force yourself to change how you feel. If you have lost something that mattered deeply to you, there is meaning in allowing yourself to grieve. In fact, it is often because you have fully experienced that grief that you can eventually lift your head again naturally. At the same time, if you continue looking only at what was lost forever, new possibilities and the people who are still connected with you may also become invisible. You do not have to do this right away. But when your heart has settled a little, asking yourself, "What still remains?" can become the beginning of moving forward. In love, this card can appear as heartbreak, misunderstanding, disappointment, or lingering attachment to the past. In work, it can represent regret over a failure, frustration at not being recognized, or disappointment that a plan did not go as expected. In relationships, it may appear as loneliness caused by misunderstanding or a change in distance. This card is not telling you, "Nothing is left." Even if you are not yet ready to turn around, two cups still remain behind you. Quietly, the card shows that beyond grief there are still things you may reconnect with and paths you may choose again.

REVERSED

Reversed meaning

Face your feelings about the past, and begin moving forward little by little.

  • Recovery, acceptance, lingering attachment, emotional stagnation, starting again

The Five of Cups reversed represents a state in which the way you relate to grief and regret is beginning to change. In one interpretation, your attention begins to shift little by little from what was lost toward what still remains. You begin to accept what happened and regain enough emotional space to ask, "What can I do from here?" The sadness itself may not have disappeared completely, but you are beginning to emerge from a state in which it overwhelms you. On an emotional level, you may stop blaming yourself continuously or become able to accept failure and separation as one experience within your life. If you can begin to feel, "There are things I understand now because that happened," it is a sign that recovery is moving forward. However, the reversed position can also manifest in the opposite direction. In that case, sadness and lingering attachment remain trapped inside and are difficult to release. Even if you appear fine on the surface, you may repeatedly replay the past in your mind. You may also become strongly attached to recovering what was lost, thinking, "I have to put it back exactly the way it was." If the desire to redo the past becomes too strong, you may overlook the possibilities that exist in the present. For that reason, in an actual reading it is important to look at the surrounding cards and the present situation to determine whether the querent is gradually beginning to face forward, or whether they are carrying grief inward and becoming stuck. In love, this may mean recovering from heartbreak and becoming ready for new love, or it may mean becoming even more attached to someone from the past. In work, it may mean turning failure into learning and trying again, or being too afraid of repeating a previous failure to move. The major theme of the reversed Five of Cups is "changing your relationship with the past." You do not need to forget it, but a time is coming when you can decide how that event will live within you from now on.

LOVE

Five of Cups in love

Upright love

When the Five of Cups appears upright in a love reading, it represents disappointment over a relationship that did not become what you hoped, or lingering attachment to the past. With unrequited love, the other person's reaction may have been less positive than you expected, or you may feel discouraged by the distance between you. It is also possible that you are looking at a single word or gesture and pessimistically concluding, "There is no chance anymore." Before deciding how the other person feels, consider whether what you can see right now is truly the whole picture. If you are already in a relationship, misunderstandings, arguments, or disappointment with your partner may still be weighing on your heart. You may feel, "Maybe we can never go back to how things were," but the relationship itself may not have been completely lost. Apologizing, talking things through, or listening to the other person's feelings may connect you to the two cups that still remain behind you. For reconciliation, your emotions are strongly focused on the breakup and the regrets of the past. You may still have feelings for the other person, while at the same time idealizing the relationship you lost. If you want reconciliation, it is important not to focus only on returning to the way things were, but to look honestly at why the relationship broke down and whether rebuilding the same relationship would truly make you happy. If you are looking for a new relationship, wounds from a past romance may be making you hesitate to take a step toward someone new. Even when you meet a new person, you may compare them with your former partner or fear being hurt again. Rather than trying to force yourself to forget the past, value the time your heart needs to recover.

Reversed love

When the Five of Cups appears reversed in a love reading, it is a time when the way you relate to old wounds and lingering feelings begins to change. With unrequited love, you may gradually regain calm after a period of being emotionally controlled by the other person's reactions. You may begin to think not only, "Will they like me?", but also, "Can I be happy in this love?" On the other hand, receiving less of a response than you hoped for may cause your attachment to grow even stronger. If you keep replaying scenes that did not go well or endlessly analyzing what the other person's words meant, regret and longing may still be trapped inside your heart. If you are already in a relationship, there may be signs that the two of you can rebuild after an argument or misunderstanding. You may become able to acknowledge the parts that hurt both of you and talk about what you want from here rather than repeatedly reopening the past. At the same time, you may continue bringing up an old wound because you still feel, "I cannot forgive what happened." Even if you believe you have made up, there may still be something unresolved inside. Rather than forcing yourself to forget, it is important to carefully identify what actually hurt you. For reconciliation, there are two directions. You may calmly review the old problems and become capable of trying again as a new relationship. Or you may idealize the lost relationship and become more attached, thinking, "It has to be that person." Instead of asking only whether reconciliation is possible, consider whether you can build a relationship without repeating the same problems. If you are looking for a new relationship, there are signs that you may be able to shift your feelings away from the past and begin seeing new people. However, if you keep comparing every new person with your previous partner, your heart may still need more time to settle.

FEELINGS

Five of Cups in their feelings

Upright their feelings

When the Five of Cups appears upright as the other person's feelings, their attention may be strongly focused on what was lost or what did not go well. They may still be carrying disappointment about something in the relationship, something left unsaid, or something that did not turn out as they hoped. Rather than meaning there is no affection, this can show that sadness or regret is currently louder than the affection itself. They may be thinking, “I should have said more,” or, “I wish I had handled that differently,” and repeatedly looking back at the past. At the same time, the card still contains two upright cups behind the figure. This means they have not necessarily given up on everything. Feelings they still want to protect, or a connection they do not want to lose, may remain even if they themselves are not fully aware of it yet. If they are keeping their distance, they may be unable to move because of sadness or awkwardness. In an existing relationship, they may be so focused on recent disappointments that they have temporarily lost sight of what is still good between you. When this card appears, avoid reducing their feelings to “Do they like me or not?” Affection, regret, loneliness, and lingering attachment can exist at the same time. Looking at what they feel they have lost often reveals the emotional background more clearly.

Reversed their feelings

When the Five of Cups appears reversed as the other person's feelings, they may be beginning to move out of sadness or regret and look toward what comes next. Even if something in the past hurt them, they may no longer want to keep looking only at the loss. If there has been distance, misunderstanding, or a breakup between you, some lingering attachment or unfinished feeling may remain. However, that does not automatically mean they want reconciliation. It can appear either as a desire to face the relationship again or as a wish to accept what happened and finally move forward. If their attitude has become softer recently, they may be processing their emotions and finding it easier to interact more naturally. They may want to apologize, talk, or dissolve some of the awkwardness between you. If you are asking about someone from the past, this card can also mean that they are beginning to bring the relationship to a close within themselves. So it is important not only to ask whether feelings remain, but also where those feelings are now being directed. The key is that their emotions are beginning to move again rather than staying frozen. If the surrounding cards and actual behavior show renewed contact, read it toward repair. If their behavior points toward greater distance, it may instead describe letting go.

WORK

Five of Cups in work

Upright work

When the Five of Cups appears upright in a work reading, it represents regret over failure, disappointment, or not receiving the recognition you hoped for. You may have worked hard without seeing results, not been given the role you wanted, or found that a promotion or job change did not proceed as expected. There may be an event that leaves you thinking, "This was not how it was supposed to go." In the workplace environment, the card can also represent carrying a mistake or a conflict in relationships for a long time. If you blame yourself too much, you may stop seeing both the abilities you still possess and the people who are still willing to cooperate with you. For a job change or goal achievement, one path closing may make it feel as though all possibilities have disappeared. However, other options may still remain: a different department, a different way of working, a different role. You do not need to pretend the failure never happened. It is important to look back at what did not work while also thinking about how the experience can be used next time. Do not look only at the cups that have fallen. Try also to notice the experience, abilities, and human connections that are still in your hands.

Reversed work

When the Five of Cups appears reversed in a work reading, it represents recovering from failure or disappointment and beginning to move forward again. You may be becoming able to look calmly at a previous mistake or an experience of not being recognized and ask, "Why did it fail?" If you can reflect not in order to blame yourself but in order to use the lesson next time, your recovery is progressing. In a job change, you may begin to sort through your lingering attachment or dissatisfaction with a previous workplace and turn your attention toward new possibilities. Even if you were hurt in your former environment, there is no need to connect that experience with your value as a person. In the workplace environment, an old misunderstanding may be cleared up, or you may begin noticing people who are still willing to cooperate with you. The "things that remain" which were invisible in the upright position can gradually come back into view. On the other hand, you may still be carrying a past failure and avoiding new challenges because you think, "What if the same thing happens again?" You may look as though you have recovered while continuing to worry deeply about an earlier evaluation or mistake. You may also become attached to past success or to a previous workplace environment and begin denying the present with thoughts such as, "Things were better before." Learning from the past and trying to return to the past are different things. Try turning your attention toward the experience and abilities that the person you are now can still use.

MONEY

Five of Cups in money

Upright money

When the Five of Cups appears upright in a financial reading, it represents regret or a sense of loss connected with money. You may feel that you wasted money, that your income did not increase as much as you expected, or that an investment or purchase failed to produce the result you hoped for. Something may have happened that makes you think, "I made a mistake." However, this card does not necessarily indicate a major financial loss. Sometimes you are dwelling on the event more than the actual amount of money would justify. Continuing to blame yourself for how you used money in the past will not change the current situation. With shopping, this is a time to be careful of impulse purchases made to fill a low mood. It is also better to be cautious about rushing into an investment or major purchase in an attempt to recover a loss. With saving and household finances, it is more important to focus on small corrections you can make now than to keep regretting the past. Organizing your expenses, reviewing fixed costs, and restarting your savings even with a small amount can all help you regain a sense of security.

Reversed money

When the Five of Cups appears reversed in a financial reading, it represents organizing regret or anxiety about money and beginning to rebuild. You may become able to think realistically about past waste, losses, or mistakes in judgment and say, "Next time, I will do this differently." Restarting your savings even with a small amount or organizing your household budget can gradually help you recover a sense of security. On the other hand, you may become fixated on a past loss and feel impatient to "make it back somehow." If you respond to an investment loss by moving even more money or remain obsessed with the amount you lost, you need to regain your calm first. With shopping, be careful not to make an emotional decision because of regrets such as, "I didn't buy it before," or, "I lost money last time." The most reliable way to recover from a financial mistake is not to make another large decision in a rush, but to improve how you use money little by little from now on. There is also no need to think, "It's too late," about your income or savings. Turning your attention away from past numbers and toward what you can do now becomes the first step toward improving your finances.

RELATIONSHIPS

Five of Cups in relationships

Upright relationships

When the Five of Cups appears upright in a relationship reading, it represents sadness or disappointment connected with someone. You may be hurt because distance has grown between you and a friend, because your family did not understand you, or because a relationship with someone you trusted at work has developed tension. What this card shows is not necessarily that the relationship itself has been completely lost, but that "the lost part looks especially large right now." Words you were unable to say, the response you hoped for, the closeness you once had—your heart may be so focused on these things that you have difficulty noticing the trust that still remains or the kindness you are receiving from other people. If there has been a misunderstanding, talking again after giving the situation a little time may create the possibility of repairing the relationship. However, you do not need to force things back to exactly how they were. If the relationship has changed, you can also accept that change while looking for a new distance that feels comfortable for both of you.

Reversed relationships

When the Five of Cups appears reversed in a relationship reading, it represents a gradual recovery from misunderstanding or loneliness. Tension with friends, family, or coworkers may begin to soften, and you may feel able to talk again. Apologizing, listening to the other person, or creating a little distance so that you can both calm down may help you see ways to repair the relationship. Even if a relationship has been hurt once, if trust still remains, it may be possible to repair it slowly. However, returning to exactly the same relationship as before is not the only right answer. Creating a new distance can sometimes allow you to relate to each other more peacefully. On the other hand, you may still be repeatedly replaying old words or events and remain unable to forgive the other person. Even if you interact normally on the surface, there may still be a feeling inside that says, "I'm not truly over this." You may also be so attached to a relationship you have lost that you overlook the connections with people who are still beside you now. Try looking not only at the person who left, but also at the people who continue to care about you. The reversed Five of Cups is not only a card of repairing relationships with other people. It can also represent rebuilding your relationship with yourself. If being hurt by someone led you to doubt your own worth, gradually releasing that idea is also important.

YES OR NO

Yes or No for Five of Cups

Upright judgment

Judgment
It depends
Reason
The Five of Cups focuses attention on disappointment and what did not go as hoped. It is difficult to give a positive answer while the mind remains fixed on loss, yet not everything has been lost. The result depends on whether the remaining possibilities can be recognized and used, so a simple Yes or No would be too narrow.
What could change the answer
The reading shifts toward Yes when attention moves away from past failure and toward the choices, relationships, and support that still remain. If regret continues to dominate and nothing is done, it is more likely to move toward No.

Reversed judgment

Judgment
Yes
Reason
Reversed, the Five of Cups can show recovery from disappointment and a growing ability to notice what still remains. The problem has not disappeared completely, but the movement is from stagnation toward recovery, making this a cautious Yes.
What could change the answer
The Yes becomes stronger when the past is accepted and attention returns to what can be done now. If they fall back into regret or self-blame and repeat the same pattern, the reading may weaken again toward It depends.

MESSAGE FROM THE CARD

Advice from Five of Cups

Upright

Right now, what you have lost may look overwhelmingly large. You do not have to force yourself to cheer up immediately. Sadness and regret are also proof that there was something you deeply valued. There is no need to rush yourself with the thought, "I have to be positive," when your heart has not yet caught up. The figure in the Five of Cups still has not looked at the two cups behind them. Perhaps right now, it is still time to look at the cups that have fallen. After you have spent enough time with that grief, the moment will come when you can slowly lift your head. When that happens, you may notice that something still remains. People who support you, the experience you have gained, possibilities you can choose again. You do not need to forget what was lost. Even while carrying it with you, you can begin walking a new path.

Reversed

Sadness from the past may not disappear all at once. Even when you try to face forward, you may unexpectedly remember what happened. Even so, you do not have to remain standing forever in exactly the same place. Little by little, you can bring your attention back from "what was lost" toward "what is here now." On the other hand, if you feel that you simply cannot separate yourself from the past, you do not need to force yourself to forget it. Carefully ask yourself what exactly you are grieving, and what you wish you could recover. Perhaps what you truly want back is not the person or event itself, but the sense of safety or joy you felt at that time. Once you realize that, you may begin to see other ways to nurture those same important feelings in a different form. You cannot change the past, but you can change the way you live with it. Rather than erasing the grief, carry it as one part of your story and begin moving gradually toward the future.
