SYMBOL & STORY
What Four of Cups represents
The Four of Cups represents a state in which what is right in front of you is not enough to satisfy your heart, and your feelings have come to a slight standstill. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, a young person sits beneath a tree with arms and legs crossed. Three cups are arranged before him, while a hand emerging from a cloud offers a fourth cup. Yet the young person makes no move to accept it and seems dissatisfied with the situation around him. Arthur Waite gave this card meanings such as weariness, disgust, aversion, and imaginary vexations. It is as though the person has already experienced enough that they have become tired of the pleasures of the world. Even when a new cup is offered, they cannot receive it as a source of comfort. Waite also described this card as representing "blended pleasure," or joy mixed with various emotions. For that reason, the Four of Cups is not simply a card of "having nothing" or "being deprived." You may have work. You may have connections with people. You may have a certain amount of security. And yet somewhere in your heart, you still feel, "Something is different," or, "This alone does not fulfill me." In modern tarot, the figure sitting with arms crossed is also sometimes read as representing introspection or a temporary emotional rest. Instead of immediately reacting to what is offered from outside, you may be taking time to determine what you truly want. However, if that pause continues for too long, you may stop noticing the goodwill and opportunities being offered right in front of you. The suit of Cups symbolizes love, emotion, empathy, and emotional satisfaction. Seen as a numerical progression, after the Three of Cups expands joy and interaction outward toward other people, the Four can be understood as a sudden turn inward. After experiencing enjoyable times, you may find yourself asking, "Then what is it that truly fulfills me?" The Four of Cups tends to appear when you feel, "I want something more." Yet before searching for something new, it also asks you to reconsider what is already beside you. Is what you have truly insufficient? Or are you simply too emotionally tired to receive it? Noticing the difference is an important key to understanding this card.

UPRIGHT
Upright meaning
Look honestly at the part of your heart that feels unfulfilled, and also notice what is being offered to you.
- Weariness, stagnation, dissatisfaction, introspection, overlooking opportunities
The Four of Cups upright represents a state in which your heart has become difficult to satisfy and it is harder to feel interest or joy in the situation before you. Rather than the circumstances themselves being severely bad, your feelings may simply be tired or bored. On an emotional level, you are more likely to feel, "It's not bad, but something is missing." Things that once would have made you happy may no longer move you, and even when someone treats you kindly, it may not reach your heart. This card can also appear when you obtain something you expected to want, only to discover that it does not satisfy you as much as you imagined. In practical circumstances, a new possibility may be very close by, but you may not be noticing it. Someone's goodwill, a work proposal, a new encounter, or a possible solution may be offered to you, yet you may dismiss it from the beginning with the thought, "It probably isn't anything special." At the same time, this card is not rushing you to "accept it immediately." Sometimes what you need now is not forced action, but time to confirm your true feelings. What are you tired of? What have you become bored with? What do you genuinely want? Once you understand that, you will naturally be better able to see whether the new cup being offered is something you should receive. For example, in love, this can indicate that opportunities exist but you feel drawn to no one, that someone contacts you but your feelings do not move, or that an existing relationship has fallen into a rut. In work, you may have stability but no sense of purpose, or be offered a new role and still feel unenthusiastic. What matters when this card appears is neither forcing yourself to think, "I should be satisfied because I am fortunate," nor discarding everything with the conclusion, "Nothing is interesting." Acknowledge the feeling of not being fulfilled, and then quietly look again at what still remains around you.
REVERSED
Reversed meaning
Open your heart a little, and new encounters and possibilities can begin to move.
- New possibilities, restarting, realization, new relationships, emotional release
The Four of Cups reversed represents a state in which fresh air is beginning to enter a heart that had been stagnant. Waite gave the reversed position meanings such as "novelty," "presage," "new instruction," and "new relations." For that reason, the card can be read as gradually emerging from the weariness and dissatisfaction of the upright position and beginning to turn your attention toward something different from before. On an emotional level, the feeling, "Maybe I should try changing something," begins to appear. Something that did not interest you before may start to catch your attention, or you may feel like talking with someone again. Even if your heart has not fully recovered, it is a change like opening a window that had been closed. In practical circumstances, new encounters, proposals, learning opportunities, work, and information may come into your life. You may also notice an opportunity that had actually been there for some time. Rather than something entirely new suddenly appearing, it may be that a change in the way you receive things allows you to see what had previously gone unnoticed. On the other hand, if the reversed card is read as the upright meaning becoming excessive, frustration with stagnation may intensify into the feeling, "I just want to change the current situation somehow." Be careful not to rush impulsively into a new romance, job, purchase, or other choice merely to escape boredom. The important thing is not to transform your entire life at once, but to begin by accepting small changes. Reply to an invitation that catches your interest. Learn a little about something unfamiliar. Talk with someone you did not usually speak to before. That small step can begin moving emotions that had come to a stop.
LOVE
Four of Cups in love
Upright love
When the Four of Cups appears upright in a love reading, it represents emotional stagnation, routine, or a reduced interest in romance. With unrequited love, you may be growing tired of continuing to think about the other person, or because nothing is progressing, you may begin to feel, "Maybe I don't even care anymore." On the other hand, the other person may be showing small signs of interest or goodwill that you are overlooking because they do not appear in the form you expected. If you are already in a relationship, the more stable the connection becomes, the easier it may be to feel that the excitement has faded: "It's not as much fun as before," or, "Something is missing." However, that alone does not mean the affection is gone. The other person's kindness and the sense of security between you may simply have become so familiar that you no longer notice them. Adding a new experience to the relationship or talking about feelings you do not usually put into words may change the way you see things. For reconciliation, you may still be attached to the past relationship while no longer being sure whether you truly want to return. You may also be so focused on the past that you fail to notice new connections or changes in the person as they are now. Rather than asking only whether reconciliation is possible, it is important to think about, "If we returned to one another, what would I want to change?" If you are looking for a new relationship, opportunities themselves may exist while your heart remains difficult to move. Even if someone introduces you to a person or invites you somewhere, you may want to decline with the thought, "It just doesn't feel right." You do not need to force yourself into romance, but if you avoid deciding everything from the first impression alone and leave a little room to talk, you may discover something new.
Reversed love
When the Four of Cups appears reversed in a love reading, it represents new movement beginning to enter feelings or a relationship that had been stagnant. With unrequited love, a small opportunity may appear in a relationship you had almost given up on, or you may regain the desire to become involved again. You may also begin noticing reactions or signs of goodwill from the other person that you had previously overlooked. If you are already in a relationship, this is an opportunity to move out of a rut. Going somewhere different from usual, beginning something new together, or talking about a topic you do not normally discuss can bring freshness back into the connection. For reconciliation, you begin to look not only at your attachment to the past, but also at how both you and the other person have changed in the present. The card can sometimes indicate the possibility of contacting each other again or rebuilding the connection as something new. However, rather than simply returning to the same state as before, it is important to think about, "What kind of relationship would I want to build this time?" If you are looking for a new relationship, new connections become easier to receive. You may begin to feel interested in an invitation or introduction you would previously have declined, or unexpectedly find yourself drawn to someone. Because Waite himself included "new relations" among the reversed meanings, this card can be read as the beginning of a new human connection or romance.
FEELINGS
Four of Cups in their feelings
Upright their feelings
When the Four of Cups appears upright as the other person's feelings, they may be somewhat closed off toward romance or toward this relationship and therefore find it difficult to respond actively. However, there is no need to immediately conclude that they are not interested. This card can appear when someone is emotionally tired, occupied with their own concerns, or reconsidering what they truly want. They may notice the affection being offered to them and still not have enough room to receive it. Familiarity or routine may also have made your presence feel almost taken for granted. This does not necessarily mean you are not important to them. The relationship may simply have become so familiar that its value is no longer being consciously noticed. For now, leaving enough space for them to examine their own feelings may be more useful than pressing strongly for an answer. Sometimes a little distance helps them recognize what the relationship with you means. This is a card of quietly checking feelings in stillness.
Reversed their feelings
When the Four of Cups appears reversed as the other person's feelings, emotions that had been turned inward may be beginning to move outward again. They may be reconsidering the relationship with you or starting to feel that they would like to talk again. This often appears through small changes: softer reactions than before, more conversation, or a greater willingness to respond to invitations or messages. If the relationship has been stagnant for a long time, they may be thinking, “I do not want to leave things exactly as they are.” Waite included meanings such as “new relations” among the reversed divinatory meanings, so the card can also be read as a restart of emotional or interpersonal movement. Even so, it is more a stage of beginning to notice possibility than proof that their feelings are already fully settled. There is no need to rush toward a major answer here. Receiving the small initiatives they show naturally and continuing the interaction without pressure can allow feelings that had been closed off to develop into a clearer form.
WORK
Four of Cups in work
Upright work
When the Four of Cups appears upright in a work reading, it represents boredom, routine, or a loss of meaning in your work. Even if there is no major problem with the work itself, you may feel, "Every day is just the same thing," or, "What is the point of continuing this?" Even when you are praised or thanked, it may no longer feel as satisfying as it once did. At work, you may receive an offer of a new role or someone's help, but feel too unmotivated to accept it. However, it is worth separating whether the opportunity truly has no value for you or whether you are simply too tired right now to recognize its value. For a job change, you may easily fall into the state of, "I do not want to stay like this, but I also do not know what I want to do." Rather than rushing to change the environment alone, first organize what you are dissatisfied with: the work itself, relationships, working style, compensation, future prospects, or something else. Regarding goal achievement, this card points less to a lack of ability than to reduced motivation. If you are bored with continuing in the same way, changing your method or setting a small new goal may help restore the flow. This is not a card that simply tells you, "You should quit your job." By reviewing what you are seeking from work and how much of it is actually being fulfilled, it becomes easier to decide whether to stay or make a change.
Reversed work
When the Four of Cups appears reversed in a work reading, it represents your stagnant feelings toward work beginning to move and new options coming into view. You may begin to find something interesting in work that previously failed to hold your attention, or feel motivated to try a new role or learn something new. You may also become more able to accept proposals or advice from other people, allowing the situation to begin moving again. For a job change, you are more likely to shift from merely thinking about it into concrete action such as gathering information, applying, or seeking advice. You may also become interested in a type of job or working style that you had not previously considered. In the workplace, changes in your role or relationships with new people may provide stimulation. Because Waite included "new instruction" and "new relations" among the reversed meanings, the card can sometimes indicate training, qualification study, or meeting a new person in charge. However, be careful of impatience such as, "My current situation is boring, so I just want anything to change." Rather than rushing to change jobs or resign, it is better to confirm whether the new option truly has meaning for you. Regarding goal achievement, motivation is beginning to return. Rather than demanding a major result immediately, you can recover your original flow by accumulating small actions such as, "Today I will do this much."
MONEY
Four of Cups in money
Upright money
When the Four of Cups appears upright in a financial reading, it represents a state in which having or spending money no longer brings much sense of satisfaction. You may have income but still be unable to feel secure, or buy something you wanted only to immediately want something else. The issue may lie less in the actual amount of money and more in the feeling that "it is still not enough." With spending, it is worth watching for purchases made to fill boredom or stress. Even if there is no dramatic overspending, small expenses can accumulate through habits such as browsing online shops without purpose, buying something because you are bored, or spending money simply to change your mood. With investments or side work, you may receive new opportunities and feel no interest in them, or, conversely, want to jump at something new simply because you are eager to change the current situation. In either case, it is important to confirm the information rather than decide according to your mood. With saving, simply restricting yourself may be difficult to sustain right now. Giving your savings a clear purpose—such as "to live with greater security," "to travel," or "to take on a new challenge"—can help improve your relationship with money. What the Four of Cups asks is not simply whether you have a large or small amount of money. Understanding what truly fulfills you can become the clue for reconsidering how you use it.
Reversed money
When the Four of Cups appears reversed in a financial reading, it represents reviewing stagnant ways of thinking about money and beginning to look toward new possibilities. In terms of income, new possibilities connected with earning may become visible through side work, a new job, retraining, or study. Even an opportunity that would not previously have interested you may now make you think, "Maybe I'll look into that." With spending, this can be a good opportunity to review purchases or contracts that you have been continuing out of habit. You may notice money you have been spending without much thought and redirect it toward things you genuinely value. With investments or major purchases, your attention may be drawn toward new information. However, something that looks fresh is not necessarily something good. Precisely when your desire to escape stagnation is strong, it is important not to jump impulsively at an attractive opportunity without checking the conditions and risks. With saving, creating a new goal can help restore motivation. Rather than saving only through restraint, having a purpose connected with something you want to do in the future or with a greater sense of security can make managing money itself feel more meaningful. This card does not necessarily mean, "A new stream of money will definitely come in." It says that by changing the way you relate to money, you may become able to notice new possibilities.
RELATIONSHIPS
Four of Cups in relationships
Upright relationships
When the Four of Cups appears upright in a relationship reading, it represents a state in which you feel somewhat tired of interacting with others and want to create some distance. You may receive an invitation from a friend and not feel like going, be spoken to by family and still want to be alone, or find yourself unwilling to join in workplace conversation. You are more likely to want time for yourself than social interaction. There is nothing wrong with spending time alone. If relationships have been tiring you, emotional rest may be necessary. However, if you become too convinced that, "No one understands me," you may become unable to receive acts of care and kindness that are actually being offered. In friendship, the relationship may feel repetitive, and meeting may no longer be as enjoyable as before. Within the family, you may be more easily irritated by what the other person says. At work, taking more distance from the people around you than necessary may quietly increase your own sense of isolation. You do not need to force yourself to become sociable, but it may be good to preserve small connections such as greetings and expressions of thanks. This is also a time to consider what kinds of relationships actually feel comfortable for you while allowing yourself a little distance.
Reversed relationships
When the Four of Cups appears reversed in a relationship reading, it represents a heart that had been closed beginning to open little by little, with renewed interest in interacting with people. In friendship, you may feel like contacting someone from whom you had kept some distance, or decide to accept an invitation you would previously have declined. New friendships or new communities may also enter your life. Within the family, you may begin to notice that words you once found irritating contained the other person's own form of care. You do not need to understand everything immediately, but even a slight change in how you receive their words can soften the relationship. At work, you may interact more with a new colleague or with someone you had not previously spoken to much. The flow is like gradually returning to the people around you after a period of isolation. At the same time, be careful not to close the distance too quickly simply because you feel lonely or bored. "I want to connect with someone" and "I want to connect with this person" are not exactly the same feeling. Pay attention to the other person's pace as well, and build the relationship at a distance that does not feel forced. Just as Waite included "new relations" among the reversed meanings, this card can represent a new entrance in human relationships. That may mean not only meeting someone new, but also rebuilding a relationship with someone you already knew in a different form.
YES OR NO
Yes or No for Four of Cups
Upright judgment
- Judgment
- Not yet
- Reason
- It is not that no opportunity exists, but feelings are currently turned inward and the possibilities being offered are not being fully received. Rather than forcing movement, more time is needed to understand what is genuinely wanted.
- What could change the answer
- The reading can turn toward Yes after rest or reflection allows attention to return to what is truly desired. If boredom or disappointment remains the only focus and every option in front of you continues to be rejected, it may move toward No.
Reversed judgment
- Judgment
- Yes
- Reason
- The Four of Cups reversed shows movement out of stagnation and a renewed willingness to notice new possibilities or relationships. Because options that were previously overlooked can now be received, it is positive for trying again or making a fresh start.
- What could change the answer
- The Yes becomes stronger when a new opportunity is actually accepted and followed by even a small action. If something is seized only out of loneliness or boredom, the same stagnation may return, so it is important to check what is genuinely desired.
MESSAGE FROM THE CARD
Advice from Four of Cups
Upright
Your heart may be a little tired right now. If what is in front of you looks faded, or if someone's goodwill or a new opportunity does not move you, you do not need to force yourself to feel happy. Still, before deciding that "there is nothing," try looking around just a little. What you already have. The people who are still beside you. And perhaps something being offered from a place you had not noticed before. You do not need to accept it immediately. First, understand why you do not feel fulfilled. Have the things you want changed? Are you simply tired? Or is it truly time to move on to the next stage? Once your heart becomes quiet, the cup being offered may look different from how it did before.
Reversed
Little by little, fresh air is beginning to enter your heart. Even within scenery that had looked faded, you may begin to notice possibilities you had not seen before. You do not need to change dramatically. Listen to something that interests you. Accept one invitation. Learn a little about something unfamiliar. Say just one thing to someone. Begin with changes that small. At the same time, do not assume that anything new must automatically be good simply because you want to escape stagnation. Even when receiving something new, remember to ask yourself, "Is this truly what my heart wants?" When you open the hand that had been closed, even just a little, there is room to receive a new cup. Now is not a time to force stopped time forward, but to begin walking gently in the direction your heart has naturally started to move.
