SYMBOL & STORY
What The World represents
The World is the final card of the Major Arcana. It represents the journey that began with The Fool arriving at one form of completion. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, a dancing figure appears in the center. The figure is surrounded by a large laurel wreath and holds wand-like objects in both hands. The wreath represents completion, cycles, and a protected world, while laurel symbolizes victory and achievement. The central figure is not simply standing still, but dancing lightly. This suggests a state in which the results gained through effort have become part of you as a natural joy rather than a heavy obligation. It can also be read as a state in which you have moved beyond the stage of needing to prove something and your inner and outer worlds are in harmony. The figure is also drawn in a way that makes it difficult to define them clearly as either male or female. For that reason, the image can be seen as a symbol of opposites becoming integrated into one. Reason and emotion, action and receptivity, reality and ideals. Rather than fighting one another, the different aspects within you are harmonizing within a single dance. In the four corners are a human figure, an eagle, a lion, and a bull. These correspond to the four beings that also appear in the Wheel of Fortune and are sometimes connected with the four elements, the four directions, and the fixed signs. In the Wheel of Fortune, these forces appear within the great movement and cycles of the world; in The World, they have settled into a more stable order. In other words, different forces such as emotion, intellect, passion, and practical awareness are functioning together as one whole. Arthur Waite explained this card not merely in terms of success or material completion, but also in connection with a broader state of fulfillment and cosmic harmony. Later interpretations, however, also widely came to include more practical meanings such as achievement, graduation, marriage, travel, reaching a goal, and arriving at a major milestone. This card represents an "ending," but not a closed ending. Rather, it is a turning point where the Fool's journey completes one full cycle and prepares to move into a new world as The Fool once again. Completion does not mean that everything becomes fixed forever. It means accepting the path you have walked and becoming ready to move toward the next landscape.

UPRIGHT
Upright meaning
The path you have walked bears fruit, and a new world opens before you.
- Achievement
- Completion
- Fulfillment
- Integration
- The next stage
The World upright indicates that something is approaching completion. It often appears when your efforts begin taking visible form or when a long-running process finally reaches an answer. On a psychological level, it represents deeper self-understanding and the ability to affirm your past experiences. You may begin to feel that even your failures and uncertainties were important parts of what made you who you are now. It is also a time when thoughts, talents, and experiences that once felt scattered begin to form a single meaning. The World upright represents not only outer success, but also inner integration. The things you chose while uncertain, the things you gave up, and the things you protected. You are able to accept them all and think, "This is the path I have walked." Even if you are not perfect, the important parts within you are beginning to come into order. In practical circumstances, it can indicate achieving a goal, reaching a milestone, graduation, completion, finalizing a contract, or the maturation of a relationship. Because it is a card of results, depending on the question it can be read as, "You have come very far." In terms of action, it is important to carry things through to the end. Do not abandon something that is almost complete; focus on finishing it properly. And once you have achieved it, instead of clinging to that place, you will also need to prepare to move on to the next stage. For example, in questions about exams or work, this is a time when your efforts are likely to produce results. In relationships, there is potential to move toward a stable connection in which each person's position and differences are accepted. In broader questions about life, it can be read as, "This is a time to integrate what you have experienced and move forward as a new version of yourself." The World can represent great success, but it does not always mean a dramatic victory. Even if the achievement is small, if you can sincerely feel, "I made it this far," that too is a worthy completion of The World.
REVERSED
Reversed meaning
By putting things in order, the next door gradually begins to open.
- Incomplete
- Stagnation
- Feeling blocked
- Insufficient finishing
- Unable to move on
The World reversed represents a state in which something has stopped just before completion. The upright meanings of achievement and integration are weakened, making it more likely that things do not fully come together, that no clear ending is reached, or that it is difficult to feel satisfied. On a psychological level, you may be unable to acknowledge your own efforts or continue feeling, "It is still not enough." You may actually have made significant progress, yet be unable to receive the sense of accomplishment because you are demanding perfection. The World reversed can also mean not only "something is unfinished," but also "remaining too long inside something that is already complete." You may have produced a result but no longer know what your next goal should be. A familiar environment may feel safe, yet you may not feel ready to step outside it. In this way, the card can also appear as stagnation after completion. In practical circumstances, it can indicate delays, insufficient finishing work, unfinished tasks, or ambiguity in a relationship. It also appears readily when the goal is visible but the final step cannot be taken. On the other hand, precisely because the place you are in has become one form of completion, creating change may now be difficult. In terms of action, it is important first to organize "what still needs to be finished." At the same time, look for anything that has already ended but that you are still unable to let go of. Rather than trying to complete everything all at once, dealing with unfinished matters one by one can restore the flow. In work-related questions, this can appear as insufficient final checks before a deadline or as burnout after achieving results. In love, it can indicate an undefined relationship, or a stable relationship that is not progressing into the next stage. In broader life questions, it can show wanting to move forward while still lacking closure with the past, or remaining enclosed within your current world. However, the reversed position does not mean failure. The World reversed teaches that it is not that you "cannot complete" something, but that there are still parts that need review before completion. Or perhaps it is telling you that the time has come to leave a place that is already complete and move on.
LOVE
The World in love
Upright love
When The World appears upright in love, it indicates that the relationship is approaching one form of completion. It often represents calm trust, mutual understanding, and a mature relationship. With unrequited love, the distance between you and the other person may be gradually settling into a natural place. Rather than suddenly bursting into passion, your previous interactions may have accumulated in a way that gives the other person a growing sense of reassurance or a favorable impression of you. However, because The World is a card of completion, the current relationship can also tend to settle into one particular form. If you are thinking about confessing your feelings or moving the relationship forward, choose the timing and your words carefully. If you are already in a relationship, the card can indicate moving into the next stage, such as marriage, living together, introducing one another to family, or making a commitment about the future. The relationship becomes stable, and you are able to accept one another as part of your lives. Even without a major event, if you can feel, "I can be myself naturally with this person," that too is a blessing of The World. For reconciliation, this card shows that the past relationship is reaching one conclusion. There is a possibility of being reunited, but if so, it is less about returning to exactly the same relationship than about facing one another in a new form after learning from what happened before. On the other hand, the card can also indicate reaching emotional closure and becoming ready to move on to a new love. For new encounters, it may point to a connection with someone whose values or outlook on life are compatible with your own. It is also a card that fits well with encounters through distance, overseas connections, online spaces, or broad communities.
Reversed love
When The World appears reversed in love, it indicates that the relationship has not yet reached a completed form. Feelings may be present but the timing does not align, the relationship may continue in an ambiguous state, or the final step toward progress may be difficult to achieve. With unrequited love, the distance between you and the other person may seem ready to close, yet never quite do so. Rather than there being no affection at all, the relationship may simply not yet be ready to take a clear form. Instead of rushing to force an answer, value the accumulation of conversation and trust. If you are already in a relationship, the card can indicate that discussions about the future are not moving forward, that the relationship feels routine, or that some sense of dissatisfaction remains. The relationship itself may be stable, yet the two of you may be avoiding conversations about the next stage. Because the current form feels comfortable, anxiety about change may be appearing. For reconciliation, there may still be unresolved problems from the past. Even if you meet or begin communicating again, there is a tendency to repeat the same patterns. If you want to reconcile, you need to look again at what remained unfinished in the earlier relationship. It can also indicate a relationship that has already ended emotionally while feelings alone continue to linger. For new encounters, your ideals may have become so high that you are missing opportunities. Or your world may have become too limited, reducing the chances to meet new people. Interacting with people in unfamiliar places or outside your usual circle may become a trigger that changes the flow.
FEELINGS
The World in their feelings
Upright their feelings
When The World appears upright as the other person's feelings, they may feel a sense of satisfaction and ease in the relationship with you. They may think, “I can be myself with this person,” or “What we have built together has meaning,” and may be welcoming you naturally into their world. In love, this often appears less as intense excitement and more as a feeling of harmony and completeness in the relationship as a whole. If you are already together, they may see the relationship as something important and may even imagine a settled future that includes you. In unrequited love, they may think highly of you and feel that you are someone with whom they can interact comfortably. This can show in behavior such as naturally including you in their everyday life or social circle, sharing plans with you, or showing you more of their unguarded self. Rather than treating you as someone “special” in a dramatic way, they may simply treat you as a natural part of their world. Because The World represents completion, however, the other person may also already feel satisfied with the current distance between you. If you hope for further development, it is better to explore whether there is a natural next form for the relationship rather than trying to force a change in the harmony that already exists.
Reversed their feelings
When The World appears reversed as the other person's feelings, they may sense that the relationship is important while also feeling that something is still missing or unfinished. This does not necessarily mean they dislike you or simply want to leave. They may feel comfortable with you but still lack the final confidence needed to move the relationship forward. In unrequited love, they may like you without yet being certain that they see the connection romantically. In an established relationship, things may be stable while one part of your shared future still does not quite fit. Their behavior may show this through maintaining the current relationship while avoiding major changes, almost reaching a decision without quite completing it, or postponing an important choice a little longer. The World reversed does not deny the relationship itself; it points to what remains before a sense of completion can be reached. Once the missing piece becomes more concrete, the other person's feelings may also become easier to organize. Keeping the existing sense of security while gradually putting vague points into words can be the key.
WORK
The World in work
Upright work
When The World appears upright in work, it represents achieving a goal or completing a project. Your efforts may be recognized, a finished product may take shape, or a long period of work may reach a clear milestone. In the workplace, the team is more likely to come together smoothly, with each person's role functioning effectively. By looking not only at your own responsibilities but also at the overall picture, you can contribute to even better results. For a job change, this card suggests moving to the next stage by making use of the experience you have gained so far. Because you have completed what you needed to do in your current place, moving into a new environment may now have real meaning. There may also be a connection with work that expands your world, such as overseas business, wide-area operations, IT, education, publishing, or tourism. In terms of evaluation, this is a time when people are more likely to see your work as "highly complete" or to feel that they can entrust you with responsibility. Your experience and abilities may be recognized as one coherent strength. However, because The World is also a card of reaching a goal, it is wise to begin imagining your next objective so that you do not burn out after achieving the current one. For questions about achieving a goal, this is a very favorable card. Even so, it is important not to neglect the final finishing work and checks. Precisely because completion is close, careful attention to detail will shape the impression of the whole.
Reversed work
When The World appears reversed in work, it represents things not being fully completed, results being hard to see, or insufficient final work. A project may run long, or insufficient checking may make corrections necessary. In the workplace, overall coordination may not be functioning well. Even if everyone is working hard, results can be difficult to bring together when goals and roles are not being shared clearly. On the other hand, The World reversed can also appear as stagnation after achievement. You may have done what needed to be done, yet no longer know what your next goal should be. Your current method may have become so established that it is difficult to move toward a new challenge. This card appears in those situations as well. For a job change, even if you want to leave your current workplace, your preparations may not yet be sufficient. You may feel safer after organizing your skills, achievements, information about potential employers, and your plans for daily life. There may also be unfinished business in your current role. Or you may simply be so accustomed to the current environment that you cannot find the courage to step into the outside world. For achieving a goal, a final review is needed just before the finish line. Careful attention to finishing documents, managing deadlines, sharing information with the people around you, and checking small details can bring you closer to The World upright. In terms of evaluation, your efforts may not be being communicated properly. You may be producing results but failing to present them, or the quality of your work may be high while your reporting remains insufficient. Rather than assuming people will understand automatically, it is also important to communicate your achievements in words or visible form.
MONEY
The World in money
Upright money
When The World appears upright in financial matters, it indicates a period when the flow of money becomes more stable and you are more likely to receive the results of what you have built. In terms of income, it can mean that work results lead to compensation, that you receive a bonus or performance reward, or that long-term effort finally bears fruit. However, The World is less a card of sudden wealth than of accumulated effort coming together. It may appear as your foundation in daily life becoming more stable, gaining a clearer understanding of your overall income and expenses, or developing a more consistent relationship with money. In spending, purposeful purchases or spending that broadens your world may be meaningful. Money used for learning, travel, work tools, or things you can use for a long time is especially likely to bring satisfaction. With saving, what you have built systematically is more likely to take shape. You may approach a savings target, finish paying off a loan or other obligation, or stabilize your household management. With investments, it is more important to look at the overall balance than to make one large gamble. Because The World is a card of integration, a long-term perspective and awareness of diversification are more suitable than becoming overly concentrated in one investment or method. In your attitude toward money, it is important not to focus only on "what is missing," but also to notice "what you have already brought into order." Holding both gratitude and practical awareness can make your financial situation more stable.
Reversed money
When The World appears reversed in financial matters, it indicates that some parts of the flow of money remain unorganized. The balance between income and spending may be incomplete, or you may have a plan that has not yet been put into practice. In terms of income, you may feel that compensation has not yet caught up with your effort. Even if results are slow to appear, if skills and trust are accumulating, it is important to keep building them without rushing. It can also indicate that you already have some achievements but have not yet expanded them into a new source of income. With spending, check whether you are trying to fill a sense of dissatisfaction through shopping. Even if each individual expense is small, their accumulation can disrupt your plans. On the other hand, you may be so focused on protecting your current lifestyle that you are avoiding even necessary investments, so it is important to distinguish saving from stagnation. For investments or major purchases, it is better not to rush the decision. If you decide without enough information or expect that "this will solve everything," you may need to revise the decision later. With saving, an unclear goal can make it difficult to continue. Clarifying "what you are saving for" and "how much you will need by when" can help bring the flow into order. In your attitude toward money, rather than seeking perfect security, it is important to handle what you can manage now, one step at a time. Small adjustments such as reviewing your household budget, checking fixed expenses, or cancelling unnecessary subscriptions can help.
RELATIONSHIPS
The World in relationships
Upright relationships
When The World appears upright in relationships, it represents harmonious and mature connections. You are able to accept differences with the other person while relating to them without unnecessary strain. In friendship, it indicates a relationship in which you can appreciate one another's growth. Even if you do not meet frequently, the trust between you may remain strong. Within the family, a long-standing problem may reach a milestone, or you may become more able to understand one another's positions. Even if you do not agree on everything, a calm feeling of "this form is all right" may begin to emerge. At work, teamwork is likely to function smoothly. Rather than one person carrying everything, each role fits with the others and the group as a whole produces good results. Your sense of distance from the people around you is also likely to be healthy. You can relate to others while still feeling that you have your own place. The World is also a card in which "your world" and "other people's worlds" come into harmony. Rather than trying too hard to change others, it is important to nurture the relationship while including the differences between you.
Reversed relationships
When The World appears reversed in relationships, it represents a connection that has not fully settled, uncertain distance, or a sense that something remains unresolved. The relationship may not be bad, but there can be an atmosphere as though something has been left unsaid. In friendship, you may enjoy yourselves when you meet yet find it difficult to coordinate schedules, or the relationship may no longer feel as close as it once did. Rather than forcing the relationship back to the same distance it had in the past, it may be better to search for a form that suits the relationship as it is now. Within the family, past resentment or fixed roles may still remain. Instead of deciding, "This is how it has always been," it is important to reconsider how both you and the other person have changed. At work, be careful of poor coordination and differences in understanding. Something you assumed the other person knew may not actually have been shared. Careful confirmation and reporting alone can greatly reduce misunderstandings. In your wider relationships, you may also feel isolated or confined. Consider whether you have become too closed within your own world, or, conversely, whether you are adapting so much to others that you have lost sight of yourself. It is important to have relationships where you feel safe, but if your world becomes complete only within those relationships, it can become harder for new encounters and learning to enter. The World reversed tells you that this may be a time to rebuild a healthier sense of distance.
YES OR NO
Yes or No for The World
Upright judgment
- Judgment
- Yes
- Reason
- The World upright represents completion, achievement, and harmony. The necessary elements are coming together into a form that can feel complete and satisfying, making this one of the stronger Yes cards.
- What could change the answer
- The sense of fulfillment can be lost if you undervalue what has already been achieved or try to keep expanding something that has already reached completion. Receive what has been accomplished, then move naturally into the next stage to preserve the Yes.
Reversed judgment
- Judgment
- Not yet
- Reason
- The World reversed shows something that may be very close to completion while one final piece remains unresolved. The direction itself is not necessarily negative, but there is still something unfinished, so it is too soon for a final Yes.
- What could change the answer
- The reading moves toward Yes by addressing missing conditions, unresolved issues, or vague promises one at a time. Do not treat something as complete simply because it has come a long way; careful final confirmation matters.
MESSAGE FROM THE CARD
Advice from The World
Upright
The path you have walked to reach this point has not been wasted. Experiences that looked like detours and choices you made while uncertain are all important parts of what has shaped you. The World tells you that you are allowed to receive the sense of completion. You do not have to keep searching only for what is still lacking. First, quietly acknowledge the results already present, the relationships that have grown, and the strengths you have developed. The thoughts that once felt scattered within you are gradually becoming one story. Not only the things that went well, but also the times you were lost or stopped moving have become part of the world you now inhabit. And completion is not the final destination. It is also the entrance to a new journey. When one chapter reaches its close, consider what kind of world you want to move into next. Your world will continue to expand.
Reversed
Just because something is not complete yet does not mean the path you have walked is wrong. This may be a period for reviewing the final details or emotions that were left behind along the way. The World reversed tells you, "If you put things in order a little more, you will be able to move on." Rather than forcing an ending out of impatience, look quietly at what is still catching your attention. At the same time, consider whether you are remaining too long in something that has already ended. A familiar world can feel safe. But if you want to see the next landscape, you may need to step just a little outside that circle of comfort. Things left undone, feelings not yet put into words, choices still kept ambiguous. Choose one thing among them that you are able to face now. Completion does not mean becoming perfect. It means reaching a point you can accept for yourself and becoming able to place your hand on the next door. The more you make small adjustments, the more naturally your world will begin moving again.
