SYMBOL & STORY
What Judgement represents
The Judgement card depicts an angel blowing a trumpet from above the clouds, while people rise from their coffins as if answering the sound. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, this angel is generally interpreted as the Archangel Gabriel. A white flag bearing a red cross hangs from the trumpet, and its call awakens the sleeping people all at once. The scene evokes the Christian "Last Judgement" and the resurrection of the dead. However, in tarot, Judgement is not simply a card about being judged as good or evil by someone else. Rather, it strongly expresses the meaning of "rebirth": looking back over your life, awakening to your true self, and moving on to a new stage. Arthur Waite suggested that this card represents a major transformation that occurs in response to a call from a higher level. And that call is described not merely as an order coming from outside, but as something that can also be heard within yourself. Later tarot interpretations expanded this into meanings such as "inner awakening," "realizing your life's calling," and "accepting the past and being reborn." The people rising from the coffins are shown naked. This can be seen as their original selves, stripped of titles, social positions, and excuses about the past. When you can accept your life, including both its successes and failures, you become able to choose the future again from a perspective different from the one you had before. In the Major Arcana, Judgement is placed between The Sun and The World. After vitality and your authentic self are brought into the light through The Sun, Judgement asks, "Then, how will you live as that self?" By living your answer to that call, you move toward the completion represented by The World. For that reason, Judgement is a card that returns to the past while at the same time moving toward the future. An old relationship or dream may revive, but this does not necessarily mean "things return to exactly the way they were." To look at the past with new eyes and live it again in a different form—that is one of the major themes this card represents.

UPRIGHT
Upright meaning
It is time to accept the past and answer the call within your heart.
- New beginning, awakening, revival, decision, turning point in life
Judgement upright represents a time when you become aware of a call that has been reaching the depths of your heart and begin moving from there into a new stage. You may begin to see the answer to something you have been uncertain about for a long time, or finally understand the meaning of a past experience. When you can think, "Because that happened, I am who I am now," the past stops being only a regret and becomes experience that can help you move into the future. On a psychological level, this is a time when your understanding of yourself deepens. Failures and weaknesses that you once could not accept may now be seen from a slightly different perspective. Rather than continuing to blame yourself, your attention begins to turn toward the question, "How do I want to live from here?" In practical circumstances, something that had stopped may begin moving again. A plan you once gave up on may be restarted, an old acquaintance may contact you, a matter that had been placed on hold may finally receive an answer, or previous efforts may be evaluated again. Something you thought was already over may acquire new meaning. However, the essence of Judgement is not simply revival. What matters is not returning to the same place in the past, but making a new choice as the person you have become through your experiences. For example, if you try again at work after a previous failure, rebirth does not come from repeating exactly the same method. It comes from using what you learned from that failure. In relationships as well, the Judgement-like development is not returning to exactly the same relationship as before, but reconnecting on the basis of a new understanding. This card can also represent an important decision. You may already know the answer somewhere inside, with only the final step remaining. By acknowledging your true feelings and responding to that inner call, the flow of your life may change significantly.
REVERSED
Reversed meaning
Do not judge yourself. Look for the insight the past still has to offer.
- Hesitation, self-criticism, attachment to the past, stalled judgment, refusal to recognize
Judgement reversed represents a state in which the flow of awakening or rebirth has become stalled in some way. This can appear in more than one form. One form is knowing, at least vaguely, what the answer is within your heart, but being unable to respond to that call. Feelings such as "I want to change, but I am afraid" or "I want to try again, but I do not want to fail" may be causing you to postpone a decision. Another form is looking back at the past so much that you begin judging yourself. You may keep thinking, "I was wrong then," or "I should have done better," and pass a severe sentence on yourself. Reflection and continuing to blame yourself are not the same thing. Conversely, you may be avoiding looking back at yourself at all. By turning away with thoughts such as, "I did nothing wrong," or "It is over, so I do not want to think about it," you may be unable to receive an insight that you actually need. Furthermore, while Judgement upright is a card about "using the past in a new form," reversed it can indicate trying to restore the exact state of the past. You may try desperately to restore a relationship that has ended exactly as it was, cling to a method that succeeded before, or try to return to your former self. In this way, it can become attachment to the past rather than rebirth. Conversely, rejecting the past too strongly with thoughts such as, "I will never go back there again," can cause you to abandon something that might genuinely be worth trying again. In other words, Judgement reversed can involve either being too trapped by the past or refusing to learn anything from it. In actual readings, it can appear as a delayed reply, a postponed decision, timing that is not yet right for trying again, or an old problem resurfacing. This does not mean "there is no longer any possibility." Rather, it may be better to think that there is still something that needs to be sorted out before you move on.
LOVE
Judgement in love
Upright love
When Judgement appears upright in a love reading, there is a possibility that feelings or a relationship will begin moving again. With unrequited love, a new opportunity may arise in your connection with the other person. You may talk more than before, or they may become newly aware of you. Even in a relationship that has shown little change for a long time, some event may cause the way you see one another to shift. If you are already in a relationship, this is a time to look back over the relationship and think about what the two of you want from here. By overcoming past misunderstandings or dissatisfaction, you may realize once again, "I really do want to cherish this person." Conversely, you may decide to give an answer to a problem that had been left vague until now. For reconciliation, this is a particularly symbolic card. Contact may resume, you may meet again by chance, or feelings may revive within the other person. A past relationship may once again come into awareness. However, the reconciliation represented by Judgement does not mean returning to exactly the same relationship as before. What matters is understanding why the relationship ended and being able to face one another now in a different state from the one you were in then. If nothing has changed, it may simply become a repetition of the past. For new encounters, a reunion with an old acquaintance or someone you were previously connected with may develop into romance. You may also find that what you learned from past relationships changes your view of love, allowing you to think, "This time, I want to value this kind of person," and to choose new relationships differently as a result.
Reversed love
When Judgement appears reversed in a love reading, unresolved feelings or past experiences may be affecting the relationship you have now. With unrequited love, a past hurt may make you decide in advance, "It probably will not work anyway." You may be reaching a conclusion in your own mind before seeing the other person's actual response. Conversely, you may decide, based only on your own hopes, that "they must like me too" and overlook the other person's real feelings. With Judgement reversed, be careful of deciding the conclusion by yourself. If you are already in a relationship, you may repeatedly bring up old arguments or mistakes, or continue judging your partner through the impression you had of them in the past. It may help to ask whether you are assuming, "They were like that before, so they must still be the same now." Conversely, there may be a problem that really needs to be discussed, but you are avoiding it by treating it as "something that is already over." There is no need to dig up the past unnecessarily, but if pain still remains, facing it calmly can help the relationship regenerate. For reconciliation, this card does not simply mean "you cannot reconcile." It may mean that one or both of you have not yet sorted through your feelings, that the same problems are likely to repeat, or that someone is still unable to make a decision. The preparation for a new start may not yet be complete. It can also appear when the desire to "go back to how we were before" is too strong. What Judgement asks for is not the restoration of the past relationship exactly as it was, but the creation of a new relationship based on what you learned from the earlier experience. For new encounters, you may keep comparing a new person with a former partner or avoid romance altogether because you are afraid of repeating past mistakes. It is important to see the person in front of you separately from the past.
FEELINGS
Judgement in their feelings
Upright their feelings
When Judgement appears upright as the other person's feelings, they may be taking a fresh look at you and at the relationship between you. They may be noticing an importance they did not recognize before, or looking back on past conversations and events and beginning to feel that this connection had meaning. In love, this can be read as feelings that had gone quiet beginning to move again. If there has been distance between you, they may feel not only nostalgia, but also a desire to get to know who you are now. If the relationship is still ongoing, they may be beginning to think about what it would mean to move it into a new stage. This may show in behavior such as contacting you after a long time, bringing up things you shared in the past, or trying to speak honestly about the relationship—in other words, choosing to face it again. Even so, a new realization does not always turn into immediate action. Judgement is less about restoring the past exactly as it was and more about choosing a new answer after learning from what happened before. Notice whether the other person is repeating the same way of relating to you, or trying to approach you differently now. That can make the depth of these feelings easier to understand.
Reversed their feelings
When Judgement appears reversed as the other person's feelings, they may be thinking about you but still be unable to reach a conclusion within themselves. Past events or earlier impressions may remain so strong that they make it difficult to see what they feel now with complete honesty. Rather than meaning there are no feelings, this card can describe hesitation such as, “Is it really all right to face this again?” or “Would we only repeat the same thing?” In reconciliation or a relationship that once became distant, nostalgia and caution may exist at the same time. Even in an ongoing relationship, they may be swallowing what they want to say and postponing a decision. Their behavior can therefore become inconsistent: caring but not contacting you, coming closer and then pulling away, or reacting sensitively when the past is mentioned. There is no need to interpret that inconsistency as rejection by itself. With this card, the other person may not yet fully understand their own true feelings. Rather than pushing for an answer, it may help to allow time for them to separate the past from the present. When their actual behavior begins to change little by little, their feelings may also be starting to become clearer.
WORK
Judgement in work
Upright work
In work, this is a time when the experience you have accumulated may be recognized again. An experience you once thought was useless, or even something you failed at before, may unexpectedly become useful in your current work. Past efforts may be acknowledged, a company you applied to previously may contact you, or an old connection may lead to work. Developments that connect the past and the present are possible. For a job change, the important question becomes, "What kind of work do I truly want to do?" Looking back over your experience may help you see what kind of work allows you to use your strengths naturally, not only which position offers the best salary or conditions. You may return to an industry you once left or make use of a skill you learned long ago. Even if it looks like going back to the past, it can become a new challenge precisely because you are no longer the same person you were then. In the workplace, misunderstandings may be cleared up, evaluations may be reconsidered, or a long-stalled project may finally reach a conclusion. For those who have continued making an effort, this can also be a time when the results become visible. Regarding goal achievement, this is a time to move from preparation into an actual decision. Applying, submitting, presenting, consulting, or otherwise taking concrete action can open the flow.
Reversed work
In work, Judgement reversed can represent a turning point that has arrived while you remain unable to decide, or a state in which you are bound by an old evaluation. A previous failure may make you avoid trying again because you think, "The same thing will happen." However, the person you are now has experience and knowledge that you did not have then. It is important not to treat the past and the present as identical. Conversely, the card can also appear when you refuse to look at your own mistakes or areas for improvement and keep repeating the same method. Rather than looking only to the people around you for the reason things are not going well, check whether there is anything in your own approach that can be revised. With a job change, you may strongly feel that you want to leave while still having no clear idea what you want to do next. Rather than rushing into action, it may be more important first to organize what you were good at in your past work and when you felt a sense of purpose. Conversely, you may know that it is time to change jobs but be unable to move because you are attached to past stability or status. In the workplace, an old mistake or outdated evaluation may still remain. You yourself may also be carrying that evaluation and thinking, "They will never recognize me anyway." To change the situation, it can be more effective to build new achievements in your current work than to continue reacting to past evaluations.
MONEY
Judgement in money
Upright money
In financial matters, Judgement represents a flow of reviewing the way you have used money or worked until now and rebuilding it into a better form. Simply looking back over your past spending can help you notice waste, and organizing contracts you no longer use can improve your financial situation. In terms of income, past experience or achievements may lead to earnings. You may receive another request from a former client or discover that a skill you learned long ago can become a source of additional income. When shopping, it is important to ask again, "Do I truly need this now?" Something you wanted according to your previous values may no longer feel necessary to the person you are today. For investments or major financial decisions, looking back at previous successes and failures can be useful. By applying what you learned from the past, you are more likely to make calmer choices than before. Judgement is not a card that says one financial failure means the end. Mistakes involving money can become assets for the future if you learn from them.
Reversed money
In financial matters, past mistakes or anxieties about money may be influencing your current decisions more than necessary. You may still blame yourself for having spent too much in the past. Reflection is important, but you do not need to conclude, "I am simply a person who cannot manage money." Conversely, you may be repeating the same patterns without looking back at previous mistakes. Check whether there is anything you are choosing not to see, such as leaving unused contracts in place, continuing impulse purchases, or not checking your income and expenses. In terms of income, there may be a possibility of using skills or experience you gained in the past, but you may be closing off that possibility yourself by thinking, "It is too late now." In investments, you may make unreasonable decisions because you want to recover a previous loss, or, conversely, become excessively cautious because you are afraid of repeating a single failure. With Judgement reversed, be careful of becoming attached to the idea, "I have to get it back." Rather than trying to recover lost money using the same methods as before, it is more important to make a new decision based on your current situation.
RELATIONSHIPS
Judgement in relationships
Upright relationships
In relationships, Judgement represents a flow of reviewing old connections and reconnecting in a new form. You may get back in touch with a friend from whom you had grown distant, or an old misunderstanding may be cleared up. However, rather than returning to exactly the same relationship as before, it is more likely to become a new relationship that can exist precisely because both of you have changed. Within the family, you may talk about things you were unable to say for many years, or begin to understand feelings you could not understand before. You cannot change the past, but you can change the meaning the past has for you now. In workplace relationships, the way others evaluate you may be reconsidered, or parts of you that had been misunderstood may finally be recognized. On the other hand, Judgement does not mean "you should continue every relationship." Looking back may also lead you to decide, "This is where I want to draw a line." That too can be a form of rebirth that comes from recognizing your true feelings. What matters is not choosing because you are bound by the past, but choosing the kind of relationship the person you are now genuinely wants.
Reversed relationships
In relationships, past impressions or events may be clouding the way you see someone now. You may continue to think of someone who hurt you long ago as exactly the same person they were then. Conversely, you may be unable to accept that the relationship has changed because you think, "We used to be close, so we should still be close now." In friendship, you may want to make contact but feel unable to act because of an awkward event from the past. You may also keep waiting for the other person to contact you while doing nothing yourself. Within the family, fixed ideas such as, "This person has always been like this," may have become strong. Precisely because the relationship is long-standing, it can be difficult to look at the person as they are now. At work, you may feel that an old mistake is still being held against you, or you yourself may continue judging someone according to an outdated impression. Judgement reversed also has an aspect of "judging too much." If you keep passing sentences such as, "That person was wrong," or "I was wrong," the relationship is unlikely to move. Shifting from the question of who was right to the question, "How do I want to relate to this person from now on?" can make the situation easier to see. On the other hand, if the relationship genuinely requires distance, it is important to acknowledge that too. Not every relationship needs to be revived.
YES OR NO
Yes or No for Judgement
Upright judgment
- Judgment
- Yes
- Reason
- Judgement upright represents something that had been stagnant beginning to move again and reaching a necessary answer or decision. Because there is energy to move forward based on what has been learned from the past, the card leans toward Yes.
- What could change the answer
- The reading weakens if the same past problems are simply repeated or if new realizations are never turned into action. Recognizing what has been learned from previous experience and making a new choice from there brings the Yes closer to reality.
Reversed judgment
- Judgment
- Not yet
- Reason
- Judgement reversed represents a state in which the necessary realization or decision has not yet fully come together. The answer itself is not necessarily being denied, but the past has not been sufficiently processed and the judgment is not ready to be made now.
- What could change the answer
- The reading can become more positive once the past is reviewed objectively and there is enough understanding and preparation to avoid repeating the same problems. Remaining trapped in old failures or assumptions will prolong the stagnation.
MESSAGE FROM THE CARD
Advice from Judgement
Upright
When you look back over the past, there may be things you regret. You may think, "If only I had done this differently back then." But at that time, you had your own reasons and uncertainties. What matters is not passing judgement on your past self. It is what you learned from that experience and what you choose from here. If something keeps returning to your mind from deep within, try listening to it quietly. Something you want to try again. Words you want to say. A path you truly wanted to choose. It may be a call reaching you from within yourself. You do not need to return to the person you used to be. As the person you are now, with all the experience you have gained, you can choose a new answer.
Reversed
Are you passing a harsh judgement on your past self right now? There are times when looking back and thinking, "I wish I had done this then," or "Why couldn't I do it?" is necessary. But if the only answer becomes blaming yourself, it becomes difficult to move forward from there. Conversely, if you are looking away from the past because you do not want to think about it, it may be worth looking back just a little. What matters is not only whether you were right or wrong. It is what the person you are now has realized from that experience. If you want to begin again, you do not need to return to exactly the same form as before. If you want to end something, you do not need to force it to come back to life either. What matters is discovering the direction that the person you are now truly wants to choose. When you find it, the trumpet of Judgement that had fallen silent will begin to sound within you once again.
