SYMBOL & STORY
What Knight of Wands represents
The Knight of Wands is a card of being driven by the passion burning inside you and leaping out from where you are now into a new world. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, a young knight raises a wand while riding a horse with its front legs lifted high. Dry land stretches across the background, with mountains in the distance, giving the scene a strong sense of departure toward an unfamiliar place. The knight's clothing is decorated with salamanders, creatures associated with fire. This symbol, which appears repeatedly throughout the suit of Wands, evokes vitality, passion, and the flame of creativity. At the same time, the energy of this knight still carries a youthful quality that has not fully settled. The horse is not walking calmly but appears to be leaping, suggesting that the force within is on the verge of overflowing outward. Arthur Waite associated this card with meanings such as departure, absence, movement, and change of residence—ideas connected with moving from one place to another. Although the knight is armed, he is not necessarily depicted as someone riding toward battle. For that reason, he can be understood less as a figure charging in order to defeat an enemy and more as someone being led by the passion that moves him toward an unknown place. In the progression of the Wands court cards, the Page notices a new possibility and thinks it looks interesting. With the Knight, that interest is no longer left only in the mind; he wants to act and find out through direct experience. He does not yet have the King's ability to see far ahead and lead others, but in courage and momentum when plunging into the unknown, he is exceptionally strong. Comparing him with the other Knights also makes his character easier to understand. The Knight of Cups moves gently while valuing emotion, and the Knight of Pentacles barely moves at all, carefully checking the situation. The Knight of Swords charges fiercely toward a clearly defined objective. By contrast, the Knight of Wands moves with something closer to a spirit of adventure: "Even if I do not know what is over there, I want to go and see." For that reason, this card strongly represents not only action, but also "leaving the place you have been and moving on to what comes next"—through moving house, changing jobs, travel, taking on a new environment, or making changes in everyday life. What matters is not suppressing your passion. It is becoming conscious of where you want to direct that fire.

UPRIGHT
Upright meaning
Let your passion guide you as you step into a new world.
- Departure, taking action, passion, challenge, forward movement
When the Knight of Wands appears upright, the passion that has been living inside you begins to turn into real action. You may strongly feel, "I want to try this," "I want to go see them," "I want to go somewhere new," or "I want to change my current environment," and situations that had not been moving may begin to gain momentum. On a psychological level, the card represents a spirit of adventure, curiosity, and the desire to test your own possibilities. Simply thinking about something is no longer enough; you want to see it with your own eyes and experience it through your own effort. Rather than avoiding failure at all costs, you may feel, "I would rather try once than let it end without ever doing it." In practical circumstances, movement and changes of environment are possible. Moving house, changing jobs, travel, business trips, transfers, or joining a new project are all examples of events that can literally or emotionally move you from where you are now. The card can also appear not because you yourself are moving, but because someone arrives, someone leaves, or a relationship or situation shifts into its next stage. In terms of action, it is more important to take the first step than to wait for perfect preparation. Contact someone, apply, research, go and meet them, try it out—small but concrete actions can begin moving the flow. At the same time, because this Knight has so much momentum, he can put small checks and long-term planning on the back burner. It is reassuring to keep the minimum necessary confirmations in place while still honoring your passion. This card often appears in questions such as, "Should I change jobs?", "I'm thinking about moving," "I want to start something new," or "I want to contact someone." Upright, the flow is more toward movement than stagnation. However, the card is better suited to the idea of "move first, then continue while seeing what lies ahead" than to "decide everything immediately." When it represents a person, it may describe someone energetic, passionate, curious, and adventurous. They may act the moment something occurs to them and have a charm that pulls other people into their momentum, while also finding it uncomfortable to remain in the same place for too long.
REVERSED
Reversed meaning
Slow down and realign your course, and you can begin moving again.
- Spinning your wheels, impatience, interruption, discord, change of direction
When the Knight of Wands appears reversed, the upright force of "moving energetically forward" is not reaching its destination effectively. Passion may become so intense that it turns into recklessness, or the opposite may occur: you want to move but cannot, or something you began stops partway through. On a psychological level, the desire to get results quickly may have become too strong. Impatience such as, "I want to change this now," or, "I cannot wait any longer," can make calm judgment difficult. You may also find that what you want to do changes one thing after another, leaving you unable to concentrate in a single direction. In practical circumstances, this card can indicate interruptions, postponements, sudden changes, or problems involving travel or movement. A move or job change may be postponed, a meeting may be cancelled, or a newly started plan may stop midway. A flow that was supposed to move forward may be temporarily broken. Among the meanings Waite gave for the reversed position are rupture, division, interruption, and discord. For that reason, there is no need to limit the card only to the meaning of "too much momentum." A plan may stop because of differences of opinion, someone may leave after a sudden change of heart, or people who had been moving forward together may begin heading in different directions. In terms of action, it is important to confirm the direction before immediately running forward. If increasing your speed in your current state will not bring you closer to the destination, slowing down for a moment may actually help you get there more quickly. When the card represents a person, it may describe someone passionate but changeable, someone who acts suddenly and then pulls away just as suddenly, or someone who has difficulty staying calmly in one place. However, that does not necessarily mean they have bad intentions. They themselves may simply be struggling to manage their own strong energy.
LOVE
Knight of Wands in love
Upright love
When the Knight of Wands appears upright in a love reading, it represents the relationship beginning to move. Instead of only thinking about the other person from a distance, the flow is more likely to shift into concrete action such as meeting, talking, inviting them out, or getting in touch. With unrequited love, the desire to get closer to the other person may be growing stronger. Increasing the number of greetings, having natural conversations, or inviting them casually can become small actions that move the relationship forward. However, rather than trying to close the distance all at once, it is better to move while watching the other person's response. That allows the card's momentum to work in a healthier direction. If you are already in a relationship, travel, dates in new places, or trying something together can bring freshness into the connection. There may also be discussions about moving to the next stage, such as living together, relocating, or planning for the future. However, if only one person wants to move ahead quickly, it is important not to leave the other person's feelings behind. For reconciliation, the card can indicate sudden contact, a reunion, or the relationship beginning to move again. However, if you return based only on nostalgia or passion, the same problems may repeat. If you want reconciliation, it is better to move while thinking about what kind of relationship you would like to build this time. For new encounters, there may be opportunities in places full of movement, such as travel destinations, events, hobby activities, or locations connected with work. By expanding your own world, you expand the possibilities for meeting someone as well.
Reversed love
When the Knight of Wands appears reversed in a love reading, there may be a desire to move the relationship forward, but the timing or sense of distance may not be aligned. Both possibilities need to be considered: passion becoming too strong, or the flow stopping partway through. With unrequited love, the desire to get closer to the other person may have become too strong, leaving you unable to wait for their response. Simply reconsidering the frequency of your messages or the timing of invitations may help the relationship settle. On the other hand, the card can also represent a situation where you are trying to act with courage but cannot make progress because schedules do not align or opportunities to meet have decreased. If you are already in a relationship, arguments may flare up on momentum, or one person may try to move the relationship forward too quickly. Plans involving travel, living together, or marriage may also be temporarily postponed. Rather than rushing toward a conclusion, it is important to confirm one another's wishes and pace. For reconciliation, loneliness or momentum may make you suddenly want to contact the other person. On the other hand, even if plans to meet again arise, they may fall through midway, or the other person may suddenly create distance. Rather than immediately trying to restore the old relationship, reviewing why you separated in the first place will be helpful. For new encounters, you may be drawn to someone exciting and attractive, but that person may not yet be ready to settle into one relationship. Enjoy the sense of attraction while also taking time to see whether their actions are as steady as their words.
FEELINGS
Knight of Wands in their feelings
Upright their feelings
When the Knight of Wands appears upright as the other person's feelings, they may feel strongly interested in you and want to meet, talk, or get closer. This is less a quiet affection than a feeling with enough heat behind it to make them want to act. They may find the interaction with you exciting and enjoyable. In love, attraction can rise quickly and become visible through action, such as inviting you somewhere, increasing contact, or making a bold move. However, the Knight of Wands is strongly connected with speed and momentum. It does not directly promise emotional stability or long-term commitment. Their feelings in the moment may be genuine without yet extending into a clear vision of the future. It is important to look not only at the intensity of their interest, but also at whether sincere behavior continues afterward. If there is already a relationship between you, the card can also show a desire to broaden the world you share. More suggestions involving travel, new experiences, or trying something together can be a sign that their feelings are turning into action.
Reversed their feelings
When the Knight of Wands appears reversed as the other person's feelings, interest or passion may be present while its direction and intensity remain unstable. Their desire to come closer and their desire to pull away may alternate, creating visible swings in behavior. They may suddenly increase contact and then become quiet, or say they want to meet but never settle on a plan. This does not necessarily mean there is no affection. They themselves may be wavering between impulse and practical reality. They may also strongly value their freedom and therefore hesitate about deepening the relationship. They may enjoy excitement and attraction while still not being ready to turn those feelings into something carrying responsibility. When judging their feelings, look at stability over time rather than a single enthusiastic action. If the relationship continues even after the initial heat settles, something more durable than momentary momentum may be developing.
WORK
Knight of Wands in work
Upright work
When the Knight of Wands appears upright in a work reading, the energy to move toward a new job or environment is increasing. This card is closely connected with "moving into a place different from before," such as changing jobs, transferring, traveling for work, starting a new project, or preparing for independence. For a job change, it encourages you to move beyond simply looking at information and into the stage of actually applying or attending interviews. If your current environment feels too limited, it may be worth testing new possibilities. However, rather than resigning on momentum alone, confirm conditions such as salary, duties, commuting, and working style. In the work itself, you may be entrusted with a new project or need to respond to sudden change. Rather than continuing to think cautiously for too long, an attitude of making a prototype, presenting an idea, or simply trying something can be more likely to receive positive recognition. For achieving a goal, this card is strong at the starting sprint. Acting while your motivation is high can create major momentum. However, if the effort will continue over the long term, it is important to include planning and rest so that you do not burn out partway through. In workplace relationships, an energetic, action-oriented person may play an important role. This could represent you yourself, or it may point to someone who leads you toward a new job, project, or place.
Reversed work
When the Knight of Wands appears reversed in a work reading, motivation and momentum may be present while the plan or environment is not fitting together properly. You may want to begin a new job but find that conditions are not ready, your job search may stop partway through, or a project may be postponed, making it difficult to move immediately in the direction you want. For a job change, the feeling, "I want to leave my current workplace as soon as possible," may be especially strong. However, if you choose the next place as though you are simply escaping, you may bring the same problems with you into a new workplace. Separating what you dislike about your current job from what you actually want in the next one will make your judgment easier. At work, sudden changes, cancellations, or insufficient information sharing can create confusion. You may also be trying to move so quickly that you fall out of step with the people around you. Rather than increasing speed, organizing who is responsible for what may be more important right now. For goal achievement, you may begin with strong momentum but lose interest partway through or shift your attention to something else. By choosing a smaller task for today instead of focusing only on a large goal, you can gradually turn your passion into the power to continue.
MONEY
Knight of Wands in money
Upright money
When the Knight of Wands appears upright in a financial reading, the flow of money is likely to become more active. You may take action to increase your income, begin a new job or side business, or spend money on your own growth and experience. This card is more compatible with using money to move toward the future than with simply protecting it. Spending on qualifications, work tools, travel, moving, or new experiences may become an investment that broadens your world. At the same time, be careful of impulse purchases made when your mood is high. This can also be a period when it is easy to decide on momentum: "I want it, so I'll buy it now," or, "This is my only chance, so I'll sign up." There is no need to reject enjoyable spending, but checking your budget once before acting can bring greater reassurance. With investments, you may be especially attracted to short-term opportunities or things with large price movements. Rather than focusing only on riding the momentum, make sure it is within a range you understand and that the amount would still be manageable even if a loss occurred.
Reversed money
When the Knight of Wands appears reversed in a financial reading, be careful of spending or decisions driven by momentum. Your emotional excitement may influence the way money moves, such as buying something the moment you want it, spending beyond your budget on sudden travel or hobbies, or investing in expectation of a short-term profit. Changes may also occur in the flow of money because expected income or work is temporarily interrupted. A side job may begin later than planned, a contract may be postponed, or unexpected travel expenses may arise. With investments, be cautious of the impatience that says, "If I do not act now, I will lose out." If you decide based only on market momentum, you may drift away from your own plan. Following basics such as beginning with a small amount and not putting money into things you do not understand can be helpful. When shopping, you may be especially likely to be swept along by limited items, sales, or sudden invitations—situations that pressure you to decide quickly. Give yourself a little time and see whether you still feel you need the purchase afterward.
RELATIONSHIPS
Knight of Wands in relationships
Upright relationships
When the Knight of Wands appears upright in a relationship reading, it represents new interaction or changes in relationships. You may meet new people, contact someone you have not spoken with for a long time, or begin something together, creating more movement in your connections with others. In friendship, activities that take you outside—such as outings, travel, or events—can deepen relationships. If there is someone you have been wanting to invite somewhere, it may be a good time to take the initiative. With family or at work, there may be a need to express your opinions and wishes more clearly. For someone who has been holding back too much, this can be the moment to step forward. However, if your enthusiasm becomes too strong, the other person may feel rushed. Changes such as transfers, moving house, entering school, or leaving a job can also change the physical distance within relationships. A change in distance does not necessarily mean the relationship is ending. It may simply be a time when the form of the relationship changes to fit a new environment.
Reversed relationships
When the Knight of Wands appears reversed in a relationship reading, it represents sudden changes in distance or misunderstandings caused by forceful or impulsive words and actions. A relationship may become close very quickly and then suddenly feel distant again, making it difficult for the connection to stabilize. In friendship, your level of enthusiasm may not match the other person's. You may invite them too often, or they may suddenly change plans. Rather than concluding that the relationship has worsened, consider the possibility that your pace and theirs are simply different right now. Within the family, opinions may differ around life changes such as moving, education, or work. You may want to move quickly while the people around you want to think more carefully. Rather than forcing your own view through, explaining why you want the change can make it easier for others to understand. At work, discord may arise between people who want to move quickly and people who prefer to proceed cautiously. Transfers, resignations, or similar changes can also temporarily interrupt relationships that had previously continued smoothly. Even if it feels as though someone is moving away, that does not necessarily mean they are rejecting you. They may simply be trying to move toward a new direction of their own. Rather than chasing the other person, it is important to put your own direction in order.
YES OR NO
Yes or No for Knight of Wands
Upright judgment
- Judgment
- Yes
- Reason
- The Knight of Wands represents forward movement, challenge, and quick action, so it is strongly affirmative when the question is whether to move. However, this Yes is powered by momentum and does not by itself guarantee long-term stability.
- What could change the answer
- The Yes can be maintained by clarifying the goal and moving while paying attention to the pace of the other person and the situation. If everything is rushed on impulse without considering what comes next, the progress may prove temporary.
Reversed judgment
- Judgment
- It depends
- Reason
- There is energy to move, but the direction is unstable and the situation can alternate between sudden acceleration and sudden stops. Progress is possible, but the current momentum alone is unlikely to produce a stable result.
- What could change the answer
- If impatience is reduced and goals and plans are made more realistic, the reading moves toward Yes. If impulse, forcefulness, or changing moods continue to control the situation, it shifts toward No.
MESSAGE FROM THE CARD
Advice from Knight of Wands
Upright
If there is a fire inside you saying, "I want to go," or, "I want to try," value that feeling. There are landscapes you will only be able to see after you begin moving. You do not need to wait until every preparation is complete. Choose one step you can take now: research, contact someone, go and meet them, apply, or sign up. At the same time, passion is not the destination itself. Do not rely on momentum alone. From time to time, check, "Where am I trying to go?" Leaving the place you are in now can bring anxiety. Even so, the desire to move toward a new world may be an important sign that something inside you has begun to change.
Reversed
There is a strong desire within you to move forward. But perhaps that energy has temporarily lost its direction. If you are impatient, try slowing down for a moment. On the other hand, if you want to move but the situation has stopped, this may be a time for preparation. You do not need to treat a changed plan or an interrupted connection as an immediate failure. Sometimes you pause once in order to correct the direction in which you are moving. There is no need to extinguish the passion itself. Ask yourself, "Where do I want to go?" and, "What can I do right now in order to get there?" A flame cannot keep burning for long through momentum alone. By tending it little by little and learning how to use it, it can become a force that carries you a long way.
