SYMBOL & STORY

What The Star represents

The Star is a card that represents hope shining quietly in the darkness and the process by which the heart returns to its natural state. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, a naked woman kneels by the water and pours water from two pitchers. One stream flows into the pool, while the other pours onto the land. In the sky shines one large eight-pointed star surrounded by seven smaller stars. A bird perches in a tree in the background, watching over the quiet nighttime scene. The woman's nakedness can be seen as purity stripped of decoration or defense, a state in which there is nothing to hide. In later tarot interpretations, this symbol is often read as "being your true self," "opening your heart," and "remaining natural and unguarded." Arthur Waite, however, also gave the woman a more mystical meaning. He described her as a figure suggestive of truth unveiled and treated what she pours from the two vessels as the water of life. For that reason, The Star can be viewed not simply as "a card where wishes come true," but as a card depicting life and the heart gradually returning to their natural flow. The fact that water is poured not only into the pool but also onto the land is also important. It suggests that inner healing alone is not enough; restored vitality begins to flow back into the real world as well. It can therefore symbolize a state in which emotional recovery gradually begins to appear in your actions, daily life, and relationships with others. In the sequence of the Major Arcana, The Tower comes immediately before The Star. Waite himself did not explicitly tell a story in which "The Star heals after The Tower collapses," but when the Major Arcana is read as a spiritual journey, The Star can be understood as the moment when, after the old structure has fallen away in The Tower, hope is found again in the quiet night. In that sense, the hope represented by The Star is not naive hope untouched by pain. It is the kind of hope that can arise after you have wandered, broken down, and grown tired—the feeling that "even so, I still want to believe in the future." At the same time, The Star is not a card that immediately guarantees practical results. The star in the sky can show you the direction, but you still have to walk toward it yourself. The Star does not say, "If you wish for it, it will certainly come true." Instead, it quietly tells you, "There is still a light within you that can help you keep moving forward."

UPRIGHT

Upright meaning

Trust the light of hope and move toward the future one step at a time.

  • Hope, recovery, reassurance, honesty, trust in the future

When The Star appears upright, it represents a flow in which a wounded heart gradually begins to heal and recover hope for the future. Rather than every major problem suddenly being solved at once, this is a time when you begin to feel, "Maybe things will work out somehow," or "I think I can try again." Often the first change occurs not in the circumstances themselves, but within your heart. On an inner level, this is a time when you can become more honest about your true feelings. Rather than forcing yourself to act strong or adapting yourself to other people's expectations, it becomes important to ask, "What do I truly want?" In practical circumstances, the card can indicate signs of recovery, a brighter outlook, or encounters with people or information that can help you. Even if results are not visible yet, the direction you are moving in may still be a good one. In terms of action, rather than rushing into a major move, you are encouraged to proceed one step at a time while restoring your emotional balance. Beginning a course of study, creating something, putting your daily life in order, or speaking honestly to someone are all ways of gradually allowing the vitality within you to flow back into reality. For example, after a failure at work, the card may represent not immediately regaining your reputation, but reaching the stage where you begin to recover the confidence to think, "I may be able to do this again." After being hurt in a relationship, it may indicate not immediately trusting someone new, but first returning to a state in which your heart can believe in people again. The Star does not promise that the darkness will disappear completely. It teaches that even within the darkness, you can still find a light that shows you the direction in which to move.

REVERSED

Reversed meaning

Reconsider your ideals and reality, and the light will begin to appear again.

  • Self-doubt, wavering hope, idealization, excessive expectations, stagnation

When The Star appears reversed, it represents a state in which your relationship with hope and ideals is not functioning well. There are several possible ways to read the reversed position. One is that the light of the upright Star has weakened, leaving you feeling, "I cannot believe in the future," "I have lost confidence," or "I do not want to hope anymore." After repeated failures or painful experiences, you may have begun telling yourself, "It will not work out anyway." Possibility may still remain, but you may no longer be able to receive it emotionally. Another possibility is the opposite: the meaning of The Star has become too strong. Your ideals or expectations may have grown so large that you are no longer seeing reality clearly. You may expect, "Surely things will turn out this way," or "There must be a special future waiting for me," and in doing so overlook the effort that is actually required or the other person's true feelings. Among the meanings Arthur Waite gave for the reversed position are arrogance, haughtiness, and a state in which one cannot bring their abilities into effect. Modern divination often reads this card as loss of hope or disappointment, but The Star reversed can also point toward becoming intoxicated with ideals or viewing your own expectations as too special. For that reason, in an actual reading it is important to distinguish whether you have too little hope or whether you have made hope larger than reality. It may also appear when you do have hope for the future, but are not taking enough action to bring it into reality. It can show a state in which you are satisfied with imagining the dream or continue preparing without ever taking the first step. The Star reversed is not a card that says, "Give up hope." Rather, it asks you to examine whether the star you are looking at is truly guiding you, or whether it is a light created by wishful thinking or anxiety.

LOVE

The Star in love

Upright love

When The Star appears upright in a love reading, it represents pure affection, healing, hope, and the gentle growth of a relationship. With unrequited love, your feelings toward the other person are sincere, and your wish to cherish them is growing. Rather than rushing to make the relationship develop, natural interaction may gradually bring you closer. At the same time, a star is something that shines in the distance. For that reason, this card can also represent strong admiration for the other person while some psychological distance still remains. It is a favorable card, but rather than concluding from it alone that the relationship will succeed, it is more natural to read it as, "For now, this is a stage of nurturing the relationship while keeping hope alive." If you are already in a relationship, the relationship may gradually settle into a more peaceful form. If the two of you have experienced misunderstandings or anxiety, you may slowly regain a sense of reassurance and trust. Rather than expecting perfection from the other person, calmly sharing your honest feelings can help deepen the relationship. For reconciliation, the card suggests that before the relationship itself returns to normal, the wounded heart may begin healing. With time, you may become able to see the other person in a different way than before. If you hope to reconcile, it is important to consider whether you can build a new relationship rather than simply recreating the past exactly as it was. If you are looking for a new relationship, there may be a good connection in places where you can be your natural self. Someone you meet through hobbies, study, creative activities, or another place you genuinely enjoy may be easier to build a calm relationship with.

Reversed love

In love, The Star reversed can represent either losing hope or, conversely, allowing expectations to grow too large. With unrequited love, you may give up from the beginning, thinking, "They probably do not like me anyway." Your anxiety may be causing you to underestimate the possibilities more than the other person's actual behavior warrants. The opposite can also happen: you may idealize the other person too much. If a small act of kindness is given too much meaning, or you become overly convinced that "there must be a special bond between us," you may lose sight of the real person in front of you. The Star is a card deeply connected with admiration. For that reason, in the reversed position it is important to ask, "Do I love this person as they really are, or am I in love with an idealized version of them that I have created within myself?" If you are already in a relationship, you may be disappointed with the reality of the relationship because you expect too much from your ideal image of a partner or of love itself. If you find yourself thinking, "I wish they understood me more," or "I wish they would do more," it may help to organize what exactly you are expecting from them. For reconciliation, you may be remembering only the good parts of the past. It is important to look back at the reasons that led to the breakup as well. On the other hand, if you are thinking too pessimistically that "there is absolutely no chance anymore," it may simply be that your own heart is still wounded. If you are looking for a new relationship, your standards may have become so idealized that you cannot open your heart to anyone, or you may have lost confidence and given up on romance altogether.

FEELINGS

The Star in their feelings

Upright their feelings

When The Star appears upright as the other person's feelings, they may hold bright and clear emotions toward you such as affection, reassurance, admiration, and hope. They might feel, "Talking with this person makes me feel lighter" or "I would be happy if we could get to know each other better," looking toward the future with quiet optimism. As a romantic feeling, this is often less about wanting to possess someone and more about genuinely valuing them. Your presence may feel healing, or they may be drawn to your natural qualities. At the same time, a star is something seen from a distance, so admiration can sometimes coexist with a sense that there is still space between you. In behavior, this may appear as treating you gently, encouraging what matters to you, or continuing contact in a natural way. A cautious person may not make a dramatic display even when affection is present, preferring to build trust little by little. The Star represents hope, but it does not guarantee that the relationship is already complete. Notice whether they are interested not only in an idealized image of you, but in knowing the real you. If calm, genuine interaction continues, there is plenty of room for affection to grow.

Reversed their feelings

When The Star appears reversed as the other person's feelings, affection or admiration may be present, but they may have lost confidence or find it difficult to believe in a hopeful future. They could be thinking more pessimistically than the situation warrants, with thoughts such as, "I am not good enough for this person" or "It probably will not work out." The opposite can also be true: they may be idealizing you too strongly. Their feelings may be directed less toward the real person you are and more toward an image they have created, which can leave them confused once the relationship becomes more concrete. In behavior, this can look like beginning to show affection and then pulling back, watching from a distance without acting, or moving back and forth between hope and resignation. If they lack confidence, even one natural, reassuring response from you may help them feel safer. The Star reversed is less a problem with the feeling itself than with the way hope is being handled. Watch whether they are trying to engage with the real you or leaning too far into either idealization or fear. As practical interaction increases, their feelings may become easier for them to understand and express.

WORK

The Star in work

Upright work

In work, The Star represents beginning to see hope for the future and discovering a direction that feels true to who you are. Even if you have been uncertain about your current job, this can be a time when you regain a positive feeling such as, "Maybe I can continue a little longer," or "I can use this experience in whatever comes next." If you are considering a job change, it becomes important to look not only at conditions, but also at what kind of work you truly want to do. By searching for work you would like to continue over the long term and work that allows you to make use of your natural qualities, you may find it easier to move in a good direction. For achieving a goal, completion may still take time. However, the goal itself may hold real potential. Rather than rushing toward a large result, continue making small improvements and accumulating steady effort. In the workplace, someone who understands or supports you may appear, or an atmosphere that has been tense may gradually begin to soften. By maintaining a calm attitude yourself, you may make it easier for that positive influence to spread through your relationships with others. In terms of evaluation, the result may not immediately appear in a dramatic form, but your sincerity and careful approach may gradually begin to be recognized.

Reversed work

In work, The Star reversed can represent losing confidence in your own abilities or in your future. You may be making an effort without seeing results and wondering, "Is there any point in continuing with this work?" The light of The Star may simply be difficult to see right now; that does not necessarily mean that everything you have done has been wasted. On the other hand, the card can also appear when your ideals are too high. You may think, "There must be a job more worthy of me," or "This is not the kind of work I truly want," and in doing so overlook the value of what you are learning from your current experience. If you are considering a job change, be careful not to choose new work based only on admiration or aspiration. Check the actual duties, income, impact on your daily life, and the abilities that will be required. Conversely, if anxiety is so strong that you cannot apply even when a good opening appears, it may be necessary to begin with small preparations rather than waiting until you feel completely confident. For achieving a goal, the dream may feel so large that you no longer know where to begin. Breaking the ideal down into smaller steps can make it easier to start moving again. In terms of evaluation, you may be underestimating your abilities, or conversely seeking recognition beyond your current level of skill. Listening to objective feedback from the people around you can help you understand where you actually stand.

MONEY

The Star in money

Upright money

In financial matters, The Star represents anxiety gradually easing and a more hopeful outlook for the future beginning to emerge. Rather than indicating a sudden fortune or a dramatic windfall, this card is more about seeing hope for bringing your life into better order over the long term. In terms of income, a new possibility or a form of work connected to your future may appear. Even if it does not immediately become a major source of earnings, study, a side job, or developing new skills may lead to income later. With spending, you are likely to feel more satisfied when you use money for things that help you heal or grow. However, it is also important not to become so optimistic that you ignore your budget simply because "the future will surely get better." With investments, it is important not to be drawn only to inspiring stories about the future, but to keep a long-term perspective. The Star is a card that shows the future, but practical planning is still needed to support that future. For saving, rather than forcing yourself into harsh austerity, it may be better to imagine a future goal and create a method you can continue steadily toward it.

Reversed money

In financial matters, your expectations and anxieties around money may have become extreme. In terms of income, you may spend without checking your actual finances because you expect, "Things will get better from here." Conversely, you may be overly pessimistic because you are anxious about the future. In investing especially, it is important not to place too much hope in attractive forecasts or promises that money can "increase easily." Having hope and being optimistic without evidence are not the same thing. With shopping, you may spend too much because you expect, "Buying this will change how I feel," or "If I own this, I will become my ideal self." On the other hand, anxiety about money may make you unable to spend anything at all, causing you to deny yourself experiences or learning that you genuinely need. For saving, if you set an unrealistically high target, the effort may become painful and difficult to sustain. What matters is choosing an amount you can realistically continue rather than an ideal number. When The Star appears reversed in a financial reading, the first step toward improving the situation is to check the actual numbers and look at the present state directly—not through either expectation or anxiety.

RELATIONSHIPS

The Star in relationships

Upright relationships

In relationships, The Star represents reassuring connections and the restoration of trust. In friendship, a bond with someone you can feel calm around without having to force excitement may become especially important. You may realize that there are people who will accept you even when you show some vulnerability. Within the family, old tension or misunderstandings may gradually begin to ease. Rather than trying to solve everything all at once, build up small conversations and acts of consideration. At work, you may develop a relationship with someone you can consult or someone who is willing to cooperate with you. In terms of distance, it is important not to move closer than necessary, but to preserve a distance at which both people can remain natural and comfortable. Relationships represented by The Star may be less about being together all the time and more about a calm connection in which you can trust one another even when apart.

Reversed relationships

In relationships, there may be a gap between your expectations of another person and the reality of who they are. In friendship, you may feel disappointed because "I thought this person would understand me." However, the issue may not simply be that the other person did something wrong; your expectations may also have grown too large in your own mind. The opposite can happen as well: you may lose all hope in people and create distance because you feel, "No one can be trusted." Within the family, old wounds or assumptions may remain strong enough that you can no longer see the other person as they are now. At work, you may feel isolated, thinking, "I am the only one who is not being recognized," or "No one understands me." However, that feeling is not always an objective fact. When you are tired, it can become easier to interpret other people's behavior negatively. Conversely, you may also be expecting too much from the people around you according to your own values or ideals. Strong assumptions such as "They should do this" or "Normally they would understand" can easily create misunderstandings. With The Star reversed, it is important to reduce both idealization and dismissive disappointment, and to look at the person in front of you as they really are.

YES OR NO

Yes or No for The Star

Upright judgment

Judgment
Yes
Reason
The Star upright represents hope, recovery, and trust in the future. Even if the final result is not immediate, the direction itself holds bright potential, so the answer leans toward Yes.
What could change the answer
The reading weakens if hope remains only an ideal and no real action follows. Taking even small concrete steps that connect hope with reality is what allows the Yes to grow.

Reversed judgment

Judgment
It depends
Reason
Reversed, The Star can tilt toward either unnecessary pessimism or excessive idealization, making it difficult to see reality accurately. There is not enough basis either to conclude that there is no hope or to assume things will unfold exactly as desired.
What could change the answer
The reading becomes clearer when you step back from ideals and fears and look at the real situation and the other person's actual behavior. If small but genuine progress continues, the answer moves toward Yes.

MESSAGE FROM THE CARD

Advice from The Star

Upright

For now, cherish the small light that still remains in your heart. Even if everything is not going the way you hoped, if there is still a feeling within you such as, "I want to keep going a little longer," or "I hope things can become like this someday," that is your star. Hope does not mean ignoring reality. It means seeing reality clearly and still finding possibility in the future. While keeping your eyes on the ideal in the distance, choose one step you can take today. As you gradually allow the vitality within you to flow into the real world, the landscape around you will slowly begin to change.

Reversed

Just because the future is difficult to see right now does not mean the star itself has disappeared. Its light may simply feel far away from where you stand. If you are tired, you do not need to force yourself to feel hopeful. On the other hand, if the expectation that "surely things will turn out this way" has grown too strong, look down at the ground beneath your feet as well. The star can show you the direction, but walking through reality requires a small step. You do not need to abandon your ideals. But neither do you need to make them larger than reality or become more pessimistic about reality than it deserves. While looking at the distant star, choose just one thing you can do today. Hope grows from both believing in the future and living carefully in the present.
