SYMBOL & STORY

What The Fool represents

The Fool is card “0” of the Major Arcana. Zero represents a state in which nothing has yet been decided, while at the same time holding the possibility of moving in any direction. In the Rider–Waite–Smith deck, a young traveler walks lightly along the edge of a cliff beneath a bright sky. In one hand, he carries a white rose, and over his shoulder hangs a small bundle. At his feet, a dog leaps up as if trying to tell him something. The young traveler’s gaze is turned not toward his feet, but toward the sky. There is trust in the future and innocence in this posture, yet also a sense of danger—as though he may not be fully aware of the risk directly in front of him. The white rose is often interpreted as a symbol of purity and innocence. The dog can be read as a traveling companion, instinct, intuition, or even a presence warning of danger. Regarding the Fool’s bundle, Arthur Waite connected the symbol on the bag with latent memories stored within the soul. For that reason, the Fool can be seen not as someone who carries absolutely nothing, but as someone setting out with experiences and possibilities of which even he is not yet fully aware. Waite described the Fool as “the spirit in search of experience.” At the same time, among its divinatory meanings he also listed more dangerous aspects such as folly, carelessness, and infatuation. In other words, this card contains both “the innocence to trust the unknown and move forward” and “the danger of moving ahead without thinking of what lies beyond.” Even the same step can be courage or recklessness depending on the situation. When reading the Fool, it is important to distinguish between “moving forward freely” and “ignoring reality.” In later tarot interpretation, the idea known as “the Fool’s Journey” became widely known: the twenty-two Major Arcana are viewed as a story of life or the growth of the soul, with the Fool as the protagonist of that journey. From this perspective, the Fool grows through the many experiences represented by the cards from the Magician through the World. However, the “Fool’s Journey” as it is now systematized was not a story presented in this exact form by Waite himself. Even so, it is highly compatible with Waite’s description of the Fool as “the spirit setting out toward experience.” When the Fool appears, there is still open space in life where the answer has not yet been decided. That can feel a little uncertain, but at the same time it is also a moment when a path different from the one taken so far can still be chosen.

UPRIGHT

Upright meaning

Take a step onto an unseen path, carrying your curiosity with you.

  • new beginnings
  • freedom
  • curiosity
  • possibility
  • a lighthearted challenge

The Fool upright represents new beginnings and unknown possibilities. The outcome has not yet been decided. In fact, precisely because you do not know what will happen, you are still free to choose. On an inner level, it suggests that curiosity and openness are returning. This is a time when you can value the feeling of “I want to try” or “I want to go there” without being overly bound by common assumptions or past failures. In terms of circumstances, doors may open toward worlds unlike the ones you have known before: a new job, a new romance, new learning, a move, travel, a hobby, and more. Even if nothing has taken clear form yet, this card tells you that something may already be beginning. In terms of action, it is more important to take a small step than to wait for perfect preparation. Look into it. Talk about it. Apply for it. You do not need to decide everything from the very beginning. That said, the Fool always contains an element of risk. Even upright, it does not mean that you should leap in without thinking. Moving out of the state of “I will do nothing because I might fail” is different from “not considering the possibility of failure at all.” Check what truly needs to be checked, and then move toward the unknown anyway. That balance is the freedom of the Fool. For example, if you ask about changing jobs, this card suggests that a new path may be worth exploring. Rather than deciding to quit immediately, it is better to take actions that bring possibility closer to reality: look at job listings, research qualifications, submit an application, and so on. If the question concerns a new hobby or activity, an attitude of “I’ll try it first” is likely to create a good flow. You do not have to be good at it from the beginning. If the question concerns a relationship, this card can indicate that the relationship has not yet been defined. Rather than deciding too quickly what the other person is like or what the relationship must become, it is important to enjoy natural interaction while getting to know one another.

REVERSED

Reversed meaning

Reconsider both impulse and fear, then choose your own next step.

  • lack of planning
  • timidity
  • escapism
  • carelessness
  • blocked freedom

The Fool reversed represents a state in which the freedom and possibility of the upright card are not being expressed well. There are two major ways this can appear. One is when freedom becomes excessive. Acting on impulse alone, ignoring danger, avoiding responsibility, or refusing to listen to advice can turn the lightness of the upright Fool into poor planning and carelessness. The other is when freedom has been suppressed. You may be too afraid of failure to take a first step, too concerned with how others see you to choose your own path, or so focused on preparation that you never move into action. Even with the same reversed Fool, the advice needed for someone who is “leaping too quickly” is the opposite of what is needed for someone who “cannot leap at all.” On an inner level, the desire to be free may be colliding with anxiety. You want to begin something, but you are afraid. You want to leave where you are, but you do not feel confident about moving on. Or perhaps you have become tired of thinking altogether and simply want to escape the present situation. In terms of circumstances, the card can indicate insufficient preparation, insufficient information for making a decision, or poor timing. It may also appear when something looks like “starting something new,” but in reality is an attempt to run away from a problem that needs to be faced now. The reversed Fool is not telling you to give up your dreams or challenges. Rather, it asks you to check: “Is this step really something I want?” “Am I stopping only because of fear?” “Am I moving only because of momentum?” For example, with a job change, you may be acting only from the feeling that you want to leave your current workplace. Conversely, you may be interested in a new job but too afraid of failure even to apply. In love, you may be trying to close the distance too quickly on impulse, or you may be so afraid of getting hurt that you cannot do anything at all. In either case, what you need is to look at both your true feelings and the reality in front of you.

LOVE

The Fool in love

Upright love

When the Fool appears upright in love, it represents a light beginning and fresh feelings. Because the future has not yet been decided, this is a time when the relationship can still be developed freely. If you have feelings for someone, speaking naturally without overthinking may create a good opening. Rather than becoming unable to act because you keep imagining how the other person feels, begin with small points of contact such as a greeting or casual conversation. However, this card does not advise throwing your feelings at someone on sheer impulse. The Fool’s freedom works in a positive direction when you move forward while paying attention to the other person’s response and sense of distance. If you are already in a relationship, it may be time to bring some fresh air into it. Going somewhere different from usual or starting something new together can help restore a sense of freshness between you. On the other hand, if this card appears when the future of the relationship needs to be considered, it can sometimes show that one of you is not yet ready to make a responsible decision. In that case, instead of focusing only on enjoyment, it is worth checking what kind of relationship each of you actually wants. For reconciliation, the important question is not so much whether you can “go back to the way things were,” but whether you can begin again as a new relationship. If you can avoid repeating past mistakes and start relating to each other differently than before, there is possibility. If you are looking for a new encounter, connections may be found in places you do not usually go or through new activities. Accepting a friend’s invitation, pursuing a hobby, traveling, attending an event, or simply widening your usual range of activity may lead to someone new.

Reversed love

When the Fool appears reversed in love, it suggests that feelings or the relationship itself are not yet stable. If you have feelings for someone, there are two main ways to read it. One is that you may be trying to close the distance based only on your own feelings without paying enough attention to the other person’s response. In that case, slow the pace a little and be mindful of a distance at which the other person can feel comfortable. The other is that you may be so conscious of the other person that you have become unable to do anything. If you are overthinking, “What if they dislike me?”, begin with a small step such as a greeting or a short conversation rather than a major action like a confession. If you are already in a relationship, there may be a strong desire to keep things fun while avoiding conversations about the future or responsibility. There may also be stronger resistance to feeling restricted. On the other hand, anxiety such as “I don’t want to lose this relationship” can make it difficult to behave freely. Consider whether you are adapting too much to the other person or losing touch with who you are. For reconciliation, it is important to check whether you are trying to return to the past out of loneliness or momentum alone. If the old problems have not changed, you may repeat the same pattern. At the same time, this card can also represent wanting to talk again but being unable to move because you are afraid of being hurt once more. In that case, do not decide immediately whether to reconcile. Begin by seeing what the current distance between you is like. When looking for a new relationship, be cautious of shallow connections or relationships driven only by momentum. Judge the other person not only by words, but by actions and sincerity.

FEELINGS

The Fool in their feelings

Upright their feelings

When the Fool appears upright as the other person's feelings, they may be developing a light, easygoing interest in you—something like, "I'd like to know you better" or "I have fun when I'm with you." Rather than already thinking far into the future, they may simply find the experience of being around you fresh and enjoyable. As a romantic feeling, this may be closer to curiosity or a spark of excitement than to love that has already taken a clear form. The other person may not yet know whether what they feel is romance or simple friendliness. That uncertainty is not necessarily negative; it also means the relationship still has room to develop in different directions. Their feelings may show through spontaneous behavior: starting casual conversations, contacting you unexpectedly, or wanting to try something together. At the same time, their sense of distance may vary from day to day, and they may still hesitate when it comes to promises about the future. There is no need to conclude from this card alone that "they are not serious." A more natural reading is that, for now, they want to experience the connection rather than define it. Pay attention to whether they genuinely enjoy their time with you and whether they naturally try to create more points of contact. That will make it easier to see how their feelings are developing.

Reversed their feelings

When the Fool appears reversed as the other person's feelings, they may have interest or curiosity but still not know what to do with it, leaving their feelings unstable. They may want to get closer while also hesitating because they fear responsibility or do not want to make a mistake. In another expression of the card, they may simply want the fun of the moment without thinking very deeply about the relationship. Their communication or attitude may come in waves, they may approach and withdraw according to mood, or they may prefer to keep the future vague. The reversed position does not automatically mean they have no feelings. It can describe two opposite kinds of instability: being too afraid to act, or acting too carelessly. Their usual personality and their actual behavior are important when deciding which applies. For now, it is better not to reach a conclusion from words alone. Watch whether they keep promises and respect your feelings and boundaries. If interactions that feel safe and dependable gradually increase, feelings that were vague may slowly begin to take a clearer form.

WORK

The Fool in work

Upright work

When the Fool appears upright in work, it represents a new challenge or a first step into an unfamiliar field. A change of jobs, self-employment, a side business, a new department, or new responsibilities may all become possible. Do not give up from the outset just because you lack experience. Begin by gathering information and trying what you can. If the question concerns your current work, ideas that are not bound by existing methods may be useful. Rather than deciding that something is impossible because there is no precedent, ask, “How could I test this on a small scale?” A new path may become visible. For a job change, this is a time when the desire to move toward a new environment may be growing stronger. However, because the Fool represents the beginning of a journey, it is better to start with the first steps—looking at job postings, learning needed skills, organizing your desired conditions—rather than skipping preparation and quitting immediately. For achieving a goal, this is not yet the stage to demand a finished form. Right now, there is value in gaining experience and learning through trial and error. In workplace relationships, speaking casually without being trapped by titles or preconceptions may create new connections. At the same time, work also comes with responsibility. Valuing free ideas while remembering deadlines, promises, and necessary checks is what turns the Fool’s possibilities into real results.

Reversed work

When the Fool appears reversed in work, insufficient preparation or uncertainty about direction is likely to become noticeable. If you are about to jump into a new job or project on momentum alone, it would be wise to review the conditions first. A lack of experience itself is not the problem. The problem is deciding before gathering the information you need. In a job-change reading, the feeling “I hate my current workplace, so I just want to quit” may be taking the lead. Clarify what you actually want from your next workplace: the nature of the work, income, working hours, relationships, future prospects, and so on. Conversely, you may want to leave your current environment but be unable to move because you have already decided, “I can’t do it.” In that case, you do not need to decide on a job change immediately. Begin with small preparations such as looking at openings, organizing your work history, or researching the skills you would need. In your current job, take care with insufficient checking or actions based only on sudden ideas. Pay more attention than usual to deadlines, numbers, contracts, and communication. For achieving a goal, you may have too many things you want to do and your direction may be scattered. Choose the single thing you want to prioritize most right now and focus on one small step toward it. In workplace relationships, casual remarks or vague replies can lead to misunderstandings. Try to balance speaking freely with being sincere toward the other person.

MONEY

The Fool in money

Upright money

When the Fool appears upright in a reading about money, new possibilities may also begin to emerge in the flow of your finances. For income, there may be the first signs of earnings coming from a side job, a new kind of work, or an activity that makes use of a hobby or personal interest. However, it is better to regard this as an experimental stage rather than a stable result just yet. For spending, you may find yourself using more money on travel, hobbies, learning, or other experiences that broaden your world. Spending on experience can have value, but take care not to overspend simply because you are in the mood. For investing, your attention may be drawn toward new things. That sense of “this looks interesting” matters, but the Fool can also overlook small dangers. Make sure you understand the mechanism and the risks before deciding. For a major purchase, rather than deciding on impulse alone, ask yourself, “Do I really need this?” and “Will I be all right after paying for it?” For saving, it may be easier to continue if you save toward an enjoyable purpose—such as travel or learning—rather than relying only on strict self-denial.

Reversed money

When the Fool appears reversed in a money reading, take care with unplanned spending. You may be acting more impulsively—for example, buying something the moment you want it or spending more than planned just to change your mood. There is nothing inherently wrong with spending money for enjoyment. Still, make sure it remains within a range that will not cause problems for you afterward. Regarding income, you may be expecting too much from a new side business or job. Before starting, check the necessary costs, the amount of time involved, and how profit would actually be generated. For investing, avoid putting money into something you do not understand simply because of excitement or momentum. The more someone pressures you with claims like “easy money” or “this is your only chance,” the more useful it is to step away and think for a while. On the other hand, the reversed Fool can also appear when fear of losing money has become so strong that you avoid even necessary investment in yourself. Check whether fear is stopping you from spending on learning, tools, or experiences that could support your future. For saving, rather than setting an unrealistic target, it may be easier to continue if you create a system that automatically sets aside even a small amount.

RELATIONSHIPS

The Fool in relationships

Upright relationships

When the Fool appears upright in relationships, the theme is engaging with people without preconceptions. In friendship, new friends or interactions with people you have never had much contact with before may begin. Instead of deciding from the outset what the relationship will be, begin by simply talking. In family relationships, lightening an atmosphere that has become too heavy can sometimes improve the relationship. Do not make every conversation serious. Time spent laughing together or going somewhere together can matter as well. At work, interactions with new people and easygoing communication that is not overly constrained by position or status may create a positive flow. However, when the Fool’s freedom becomes too strong, you may lose sight of the appropriate distance between yourself and someone else. Something that feels casual to you may carry a different meaning for the other person. Being free and natural, while also respecting the other person’s boundaries— by valuing both, you can build relationships that feel comfortable for everyone involved.

Reversed relationships

When the Fool appears reversed in relationships, the balance between freedom and appropriate distance may be breaking down. In friendship, actions that feel casual to you—such as treating promises lightly or contacting someone only when you feel like it—may be making the other person uneasy. Conversely, you may be so afraid of being disliked that you have become unable to approach anyone yourself. If so, do not try to build a deep bond all at once. Begin with light interaction such as a short conversation or a greeting. In family relationships, the desire to escape restriction or interference may be growing stronger. Before creating distance in the heat of emotion, it can help to organize and communicate what, specifically, feels burdensome to you. At work, consider whether your free-spirited behavior may be appearing irresponsible to others. On the other hand, you may be so concerned about how others evaluate you that you have become unable to express your own opinion at all. Also, “wanting to be alone” and “becoming isolated” are not the same thing. Even while valuing your freedom, it is important not to cut off connections with people you can trust. Your freedom and the other person’s freedom— rather than prioritizing only one side, look for a distance at which both of you can feel comfortable.

YES OR NO

Yes or No for The Fool

Upright judgment

Judgment
It depends
Reason
The Fool represents the fact that the future has not yet been decided. The possibilities are open, but at this point the answer has not settled into either Yes or No. What happens next can change greatly depending on the choices and actions that follow.
What could change the answer
After checking the minimum practical details, taking an actual step and allowing the situation to become more concrete can move the answer toward Yes. If you act only on impulse or ignore real risks and conditions, it can move toward No.

Reversed judgment

Judgment
Not yet
Reason
The Fool reversed points to insufficient preparation, carelessness, or being too afraid to move. More than the answer itself, the problem is often that the foundation for sound judgment or action is not yet ready.
What could change the answer
The reading can change once missing information and preparation are addressed and a choice can be made without leaning too far toward either impulse or fear. When it becomes possible to test the situation in a small, realistic way, a Yes becomes more possible.

MESSAGE FROM THE CARD

Advice from The Fool

Upright

You do not have to wait until you understand everything before moving forward. It is natural to feel uneasy about a future you cannot yet see. Even so, if there is a small voice inside you saying, “I want to try this” or “I want to go this way,” you do not necessarily have to ignore it. You do not need to make a huge decision all at once. Look into it first. Talk about it a little. Try it once. That small step can become the beginning of a new story. But freedom does not mean moving ahead without thinking. It means checking the ground beneath your feet, while still choosing to trust the unknown and walk toward it. You still have paths available to choose.

Reversed

For now, check which direction you may be leaning too far toward. Are you about to leap without thinking at all? Or are you thinking so much that you cannot take even one step? If you are moving only on momentum, check the ground beneath your feet for a moment. Gathering the information you need or listening to someone you trust can actually make it easier to move forward more freely. If fear has made you unable to move, you do not have to make a major decision. Look into it. Prepare for it. Try a little. Those are meaningful steps too. And when the feeling “I just want to get away from here” is especially strong, ask yourself whether there is truly something you want on the other side. Freedom is not merely escaping from something. It is being able to choose, by your own will, the direction in which you move. Once you have checked the ground beneath your feet, you do not have to remain forever on this side of the cliff. Choose your step again, toward the direction you truly want to go.
