SYMBOL & STORY
What The Empress represents
The Empress is a card that represents the power to nurture life and bring abundance into the world. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, the Empress sits at ease amid abundant nature. Golden wheat ripens at her feet, while behind her are a forest and flowing water. The scene depicts the natural cycle in which life sprouts, grows over time, and eventually bears fruit. She wears a crown of twelve stars and holds a scepter topped with a globe, often understood as a symbol of the world. Nearby is a heart-shaped shield bearing the symbol of Venus. Venus has long been associated with love, beauty, attraction, joy, and pleasure. These symbols show that the Empress is not simply a card of “motherhood”; she can also be read as a figure who brings affection, sensitivity, and the abundance of nature into tangible reality. Arthur Waite closely associated the Empress with fertility and the life force. He also described her as something like a “gateway” through which life manifests in this world. An interesting point here is her relationship with the preceding card, the High Priestess. If the High Priestess symbolizes the unseen world, secrets deep within the heart, and possibilities that have not yet taken words or form, then the Empress can be seen as the one who nurtures those possibilities in the real world. If the High Priestess is “what is hidden within,” the Empress is “what is born from it and begins to grow.” However, the “harvest” represented by the Empress does not refer only to a finished result. A seed that has just been planted, a flower that has only begun to bloom, and fruit that is still ripening are all stages in the process of life growing. For that reason, when this card appears, it is important not to jump to conclusions such as “success is guaranteed” or “this love will definitely come true.” A more fitting reading is that “with care and nurturing, this has the potential to grow into something rich and fulfilling.” The contrast with the next card, the Emperor, is also important. If the Empress is the power that nurtures life and lets it expand, the Emperor is the power that gives it order, protects it, and shapes it into a stable form. The Empress alone can allow things to spread too far, while the Emperor alone can make them too rigid. Above all, the Empress is a card that “creates a place where something can grow.”

UPRIGHT
Upright meaning
Nurture what matters with love, and let its fruits grow slowly.
- Growth
- Affection
- Abundance
- Creation
- Acceptance
The Empress upright represents a state in which something is slowly growing and moving toward greater abundance. In love, work, relationships, creative pursuits, or everyday life, something you have invested time and care in may be gradually beginning to take shape. However, the Empress is less a card of “immediate results” and more a card of “nurturing something until it bears fruit.” If you have only just sown the seed, changes may still be taking place beneath the soil. If a sprout has appeared, it will still need water and light from here on. Rather than rushing for a result, what matters now is carefully tending to what already exists. Emotionally and mentally, this can be a time when you have more room to accept yourself and the people around you. Instead of driving yourself with thoughts such as “I have to try harder,” acknowledging what you have already done and allowing yourself comfortable, restorative moments may help your natural charm and creativity return. This is also a period in which your ability to create something can become stronger. Art, writing, cooking, work projects, new services, relationships—whatever has existed inside you can be nurtured into a tangible form in the real world. In terms of circumstances, your environment may be becoming more secure, relationships may be growing calmer, or your efforts may be starting to lead to visible results. At the same time, the Empress also carries the aspect of “still being in the process of growing.” For example, even if romance has a good atmosphere, the relationship may not yet be defined. Likewise, a promising work project may have begun, but it may still need time before completion. “Because it has room to grow in a good direction, treat it with care now.” That is the basic way to read the Empress upright.
REVERSED
Reversed meaning
Reconsider where you are giving too much, and true abundance will become easier to see.
- Stagnation
- Excess
- Dependence
- Indecision
- Release
The Empress reversed indicates that the flow of affection, abundance, or nurturing energy is appearing in a form different from its usual expression. A common interpretation is that the qualities of the upright card have weakened, become unbalanced, or grown excessive. For example, you may give so much affection that it becomes possessiveness or control. You may care for someone so much that you exhaust yourself. You may avoid change because you are seeking security too strongly. You may try to fill an unfulfilled feeling with food, shopping, romance, or other comforts. The card can appear in these kinds of situations. It can also appear when you want to nurture something, but it is not growing the way you hoped. A work project may not be moving forward, a romantic situation may remain vague and stagnant, or you may be unable to express your creativity well. It can be a state in which “the power to grow is blocked.” At the same time, the Empress reversed can also be read from another direction. Among the reversed meanings given by Arthur Waite are elements such as light, truth, the unraveling of complicated matters, and joy. For that reason, this card can also indicate stepping back from a situation in which feelings and expectations have become too entangled, making it easier to see things clearly. Someone who has been doing too much for another person realizes, “I do not have to carry this much.” Someone in an ambiguous relationship comes to understand what they truly want. Someone who has become too comfortable breaks out of that state and begins taking practical action. In this sense, it can represent “being released from an excess of Empress energy.” It can also appear as uncertainty or indecision. You may have too many things you want to nurture and be unable to decide where to place your energy. The appearance of the reversed card does not mean abundance has been lost. It simply means that now is the time to adjust how that energy is being used and how it is flowing. “What am I nurturing?” “How much of this is truly mine to take care of?” “What would be better to let go of?” By reconsidering these questions, the abundance of the Empress can begin to flow naturally again.
LOVE
The Empress in love
Upright love
In love, the Empress upright represents a time when affection and closeness can grow easily. Rather than overwhelming passion, it often appears as gentle feelings such as “I feel at ease when I am with this person” or “I want to cherish this person.” If your feelings are unrequited, a sense of familiarity or comfort may be developing between you and the other person. Instead of trying to move the relationship forward immediately, let feelings grow through natural conversation and small acts of consideration. If you are already in a relationship, things may be settling into a calmer rhythm and a greater sense of security may be developing between you. Sharing meals, everyday routines, and simple time together can deepen affection naturally. The card can sometimes appear when thoughts turn toward the future, living together, marriage, or family, but there is no need to conclude any of those things from a single card alone. For reconciliation, the key is not to blame each other for past problems, but to ask whether the two of you can nurture a safe and reassuring relationship again. Rather than returning only because you feel lonely, consider whether you can create a calmer and healthier relationship than before. If you are looking for a new relationship, this is a time when your natural appeal may come across easily. Instead of forcing yourself to fit someone else's expectations, value the places and activities in which you genuinely feel comfortable. Doing so may help lead you toward a good connection.
Reversed love
In love, the Empress reversed asks you to look not only at how much affection there is, but at how it is being given and received. If your feelings are unrequited, you may be paying too much attention to the other person's reactions or forcing yourself to adapt in order to be liked. The stronger your feelings are, the more important it is to check whether you have neglected your own life or emotional well-being. On the other hand, feelings that have remained vague for a long time may begin to clear, allowing you to see what you truly want. Rather than thinking only about whether the other person likes you, this can become an opportunity to ask whether you genuinely want this relationship yourself. If you are already in a relationship, dependence, taking each other for granted, stagnation, or over-caretaking may become more noticeable. Things you assumed “should be understood without saying them” may become a cause of misunderstanding. However, if you have been adapting yourself too much to your partner, taking a little distance and reclaiming some of your own time may make the relationship healthier. For reconciliation, it is important to check that you are not trying to return only out of loneliness or attachment. This can also be a time when you begin to see what was painful in the previous relationship. If you understand the cause and can rebuild the relationship differently, there may be room to create a new way of relating to each other. If you are looking for a new relationship, reflect on whether you are seeking someone only to fill loneliness. You may also be idealizing a potential partner so much that you are no longer seeing the real person in front of you.
FEELINGS
The Empress in their feelings
Upright their feelings
When the Empress appears upright as the other person's feelings, they may feel attraction, warmth, and a sense of comfort toward you. This card often appears as a generous, receptive feeling: being able to relax around you, wanting to spend more time together, or wanting to make you happy. In romance, it can indicate something deeper than simple curiosity—a growing desire to cherish the other person. Their attraction may be to your whole presence, including how easy you are to talk to, your kindness, and the sense of ease they feel around you, not only to outward appearance. Their feelings may show through giving: thoughtful gestures, small gifts, compliments, or making time for you. They may also enjoy allowing the relationship to grow naturally rather than pushing you for an immediate response. The Empress represents abundance, but also the process of nurturing. Rather than assuming that the love is already complete, it is better to see affection expanding within a comfortable connection. When you respond with appreciation and care of your own, those feelings are more likely to become stable.
Reversed their feelings
When the Empress appears reversed as the other person's feelings, affection may be present, but they may not currently have enough emotional room to nurture it in a healthy way. Fatigue from work or daily life, low self-confidence, or an inner sense of lack may be mixing into what they feel. Because of that, "I care about you and want to cherish you" can become difficult to separate from "I want you to make me feel whole." They may strongly seek messages or reassurance, or, in the opposite direction, lack enough energy to show consideration toward you. They may also struggle to believe in their own attractiveness and therefore have difficulty accepting your affection. Even when they want to get closer, they might withdraw because they feel, "I'm not good enough for this person." In that case, affection itself may be shrinking inward rather than disappearing. The reversed position does not mean there is no love. What matters is whether the other person is using the relationship to have one-sided needs filled, and whether both of you can give and receive without strain. As their emotional room and self-worth recover, the natural warmth of the Empress can become easier to express.
WORK
The Empress in work
Upright work
In work, the Empress upright indicates that your efforts or ideas are growing and moving toward results. A plan, project, or new job may still be unfinished, but it may be developing steadily. Rather than rushing for a result, it is important to give it the time and care it needs. The qualities of the Empress are especially easy to use in creative work, design, education, customer service, welfare, service-oriented roles, and work that involves nurturing or developing people. You may also find yourself in a role where you support others or improve the atmosphere of the workplace. When it comes to recognition, not only flashy achievements but also your carefulness, steadiness, and willingness to look after others may be appreciated. If you are considering changing jobs, look beyond salary and title and ask, “Can I grow here?” and “Can I develop the things I am good at here?” This card can also appear as a sign that it is time to begin creating something of your own. If you have an idea, rather than waiting until it is perfect, give it a small form first and then nurture it from there.
Reversed work
In work, the Empress reversed can show that things are not developing as you hoped. A plan may stagnate, results may be slow to appear, or you may have ideas but struggle to give them form. Your creativity may not be flowing smoothly into reality. The cause may not be only inadequate preparation. You may also be carrying too much work yourself. If you are looking after everyone else to the point that your own work cannot progress, you may need to clarify responsibilities and boundaries. Conversely, if you have been relying too much on others or becoming complacent in a comfortable environment, you may now need to take more initiative yourself. If you are considering changing jobs, rather than moving hastily only because “I dislike my current environment,” think about the abilities and way of life you genuinely want to nurture. For someone who has been undecided for a long time, the reversed card can also appear as a movement toward “breaking free from indecision.” Once you can see what to prioritize, a stagnant situation may begin to move again. If you are not seeing results at work, rather than concluding that you lack talent, reconsider whether your current way of developing that talent actually suits you. Changing your method, reducing your workload, or concentrating on one thing at a time may allow growth to begin again.
MONEY
The Empress in money
Upright money
In financial matters, the Empress upright represents abundance gradually growing. Results from your work may begin to increase your income, or something you have worked on may start producing profit. However, rather than a sudden windfall, the Empress is more naturally read as money that grows over time. For savings and building assets, it is important to choose methods you can continue without overextending yourself. The same applies to investing: rather than making short-term bets, it suits an approach in which you understand what you are investing in and nurture it over the long term. As for spending, money used to enrich your own life or the lives of people you care about can be meaningful. Food, your living environment, health, learning, hobbies, and creative activities—spending on things that continue to nourish your heart can make abundance easier to feel. At the same time, the Empress is also a card that enjoys comfort and pleasure. If you lean too far into the idea that “I have enough, so it is fine to spend,” expenses can grow. It is worth asking whether a purchase will truly nourish and satisfy you.
Reversed money
In financial matters, the Empress reversed asks you to examine whether your desire for abundance has become overly focused on spending. You may be buying things because you are tired, buying because you feel lonely, or increasingly treating yourself in order to lift your mood. Small emotional purchases can accumulate. Each one may seem insignificant, but together they can put pressure on your finances. It is also wise to be cautious about overly optimistic thinking such as “It will probably work out somehow.” For major purchases or investments, look not only at what appears attractive, but also at the conditions and risks. With income, you may be working hard while still needing time before your efforts lead to results. In that case, rather than constantly starting something new, it may be better to reconsider how you are nurturing what you already have. On the other hand, this card can also appear at a time when you are being released from excessive attachment to money or from too much anxiety about it. Someone who has believed, “I cannot feel secure unless I have more,” may begin to recognize what they truly need. By organizing your finances and reviewing unnecessary expenses or contracts, you may discover that the problem is simpler than you thought. Abundance is not only about how much money you have available to spend. Knowing what is enough for you is also an important step toward a healthy relationship with money.
RELATIONSHIPS
The Empress in relationships
Upright relationships
In relationships, the Empress upright shows that trust and a sense of security are slowly growing. In friendship, it may be especially valuable to cherish connections with people around whom you do not have to force yourself to be anything other than who you are. Even without any special event, a relationship can deepen through the accumulation of ordinary conversations and shared time. Within family relationships, supporting one another, caring for each other, and creating a place where people can feel safe become important themes. At work, you may take on a role in which you look after those around you or help someone grow. However, the kindness of the Empress does not mean “taking responsibility for everything.” If you truly want someone to grow, sometimes it is important not only to help them, but also to watch over them and let them do things for themselves. If there is someone with whom you want to build trust, rather than rushing to close the distance, try building up time in which both of you can interact comfortably and safely.
Reversed relationships
In relationships, the Empress reversed makes the balance between kindness and healthy distance an important theme. If you take care of someone too much because you believe it is for their sake, or if you take their problems onto your own shoulders, the relationship can become painful for both of you. In friendship, consider whether the roles have become unbalanced—for example, whether you are always the one listening to problems or are unable to say no to requests. Within family relationships, the card can appear as overprotection or excessive interference. Helping someone can be an expression of love, but so can leaving them room to think and experience things for themselves. With the reversed Empress, sometimes “not taking care of everything” is exactly what is needed. At work, you may be carrying too much of the emotional burden of workplace relationships. If you feel responsible even for another person's mood, it may be all right to take a little distance. Conversely, you may be avoiding connection so strongly that you have become isolated. Perhaps you actually want help but are unable to ask for it. This card can also appear as a sign that “the tangles in a relationship are beginning to loosen.” Expectations or assumptions you have held about someone may fade, and you may realize, “This amount of distance is just right for us.” Deepening a relationship is not the only kind of positive change. Finding a distance at which neither person has to strain themselves is also one way to nurture a relationship anew.
YES OR NO
Yes or No for The Empress
Upright judgment
- Judgment
- Yes
- Reason
- The Empress upright represents growth, abundance, acceptance, and fruition. Because it carries the power for something to develop naturally and take shape in the desired direction, it is a card that leans toward Yes.
- What could change the answer
- The condition is allowing enough time and care rather than trying to harvest results too soon. If giving becomes excessive or turns into overindulgence, growth may stall, so balance with receiving is also important.
Reversed judgment
- Judgment
- Not yet
- Reason
- The Empress reversed suggests that the ability to nurture and receive has weakened or become uneven, so affection or resources are not circulating well. The wish may still have room to grow, but the environment is not yet ready for it to fully bear fruit.
- What could change the answer
- The reading can move toward Yes once rest and daily stability return and an imbalance of giving too much or asking too much is corrected. If results are demanded without providing the care that growth needs, it is more likely to move toward No.
MESSAGE FROM THE CARD
Advice from The Empress
Upright
What you have carefully nurtured is changing little by little, even where you cannot yet see it. The fact that it is not finished yet does not mean your efforts so far have been meaningless. A seed is still growing even while it remains beneath the soil. For now, rather than trying to force a result, give it what it needs and allow yourself to watch over its growth. Caring for someone else and caring for yourself are equally important. Resting, enjoying yourself, and allowing yourself to receive comfort are also sources of strength that help you move forward. As you become more fulfilled yourself, that abundance will naturally begin to spread to the people around you as well.
Reversed
The more you care about something, the more you may want to give it everything you can. But nurturing something and carrying everything yourself are not the same thing. If you are devoting yourself to someone until you are completely exhausted, try directing some of that kindness toward yourself as well. And even if something you have nurtured is not progressing the way you hoped, you do not need to decide immediately that it has failed. It may simply be time to change how you are caring for it. If you have been giving it too much water, give it a little less. If you have neglected it too long, give it your attention again. And sometimes, what you need to see only becomes visible when you stop trying to nurture something and let it go. What has been vague may gradually become clearer, helping you recognize what truly matters. Abundance is not only about possessing a great many things. Knowing what you need and being able to nurture it without exhausting yourself is another form of abundance that the Empress teaches.
