SYMBOL & STORY
What Six of Wands represents
The Six of Wands is a card that represents the "victory and recognition" that come after overcoming effort and competition. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, a figure wearing a laurel wreath rides a white horse while moving forward surrounded by many people. The wand in the rider's hand is also decorated with a laurel wreath, showing success, honor, and achievement in a visible form. The laurel wreath has long been a symbol of victory and honor. The white horse ridden by the figure is also sometimes interpreted as representing purity, high ideals, and the spirit of moving forward with confidence. However, Arthur Waite himself did not clearly explain every aspect of this color symbolism. It is therefore better understood as a later symbolic interpretation. The meaning of this card becomes even clearer when viewed in sequence with the preceding Five of Wands. In the Five of Wands, people each held their own wand, competing and clashing with one another. In the Six of Wands, after that competition and trial and error, one result has taken form. In other words, the victory represented by this card is less a matter of accidental good fortune than a sense of achievement gained after challenge and effort. Arthur Waite associated this card with the triumphant return of a victor, good news, and expectation. For that reason, its meaning is not simply "you will succeed," but also includes your results being recognized by others and receiving the news you had hoped for. Later tarot interpretations expanded this further into meanings such as fame, popularity, leadership, social recognition, and the desire for approval. The success shown by the Six of Wands is not something that remains only within yourself. It is likely to appear in forms such as passing an exam, receiving recognition at work, getting a favorable reaction in love, or having your work or activities praised—situations where "what you have built reaches someone else." However, the figure has not dismounted from the horse. Even while being celebrated for victory, the journey is still in progress. For that reason, the Six of Wands is not a card that says "this is the end," but one that can also represent carrying one success forward into the next stage. It is important to receive praise honestly, remember your gratitude toward those who supported you, and continue toward your next step.

UPRIGHT
Upright meaning
Your efforts are being recognized, and it is time to move forward with confidence.
- Success, recognition, victory, attention, good news
When the Six of Wands appears upright, it represents a flow in which your efforts begin to bear fruit, others recognize what you have done, and you yourself become able to feel the results. It is a time when your hard work is more likely to bring something back to you and when you can feel, "What I have done was not in vain." On a psychological level, the card represents recovering confidence and a stronger sense of self-worth. Precisely because you have already experienced uncertainty and competition, you may begin to trust your own abilities a little more. For someone who has been holding back, having the courage to step forward and honestly acknowledging your own achievements are also important themes of this card. In practical circumstances, developments such as being recognized, being chosen, receiving good news, or attracting attention are possible. In situations where results come back from outside—such as exams, interviews, contests, work performance, or presenting your creations—this is a very positive card. In terms of action, it is important not to make yourself smaller than necessary. Being humble is not the same as denying your own effort. When someone praises you, receive it with a simple "Thank you," and try acknowledging what you have built. That recognition becomes strength for your next challenge. In common readings, this can mean "your efforts are recognized" or "you move closer to promotion or being hired" in work; "you receive a favorable reaction from the other person" in love; or "you become trusted and relied upon" in relationships. However, the Six of Wands is not a final destination. While appreciating the results you have now, being aware of how you will connect this experience to the next stage can create an even better flow.
REVERSED
Reversed meaning
Rather than relying on other people's evaluation, recognize how far you yourself have come.
- Insufficient recognition, need for approval, overconfidence, loss of confidence, spinning your wheels
When the Six of Wands appears reversed, the upright forces of "victory," "recognition," and "confidence" are weakened, distorted, or difficult to receive. It can indicate situations where you are making an effort but are not being recognized as you hoped, where results take time to appear, or where the reaction you expected does not come back. Even though you are working hard, the results may not be reaching the people around you clearly. On the other hand, this card can also appear when you have actually achieved enough, yet cannot acknowledge it yourself. You may think, "It still isn't enough," or "It means nothing unless I receive more recognition," and end up being unable to receive the success you have already gained. On a psychological level, both a loss of confidence and excessive confidence are possible. You may shrink back and think, "Someone like me could never do it," or you may become convinced, "I'll be fine," and stop listening to the people around you. In either case, your ability to view yourself realistically is slightly out of balance. The card can also appear as an excessive need for approval, in which you become too concerned with how others see you. You may feel anxious when you are not praised, become discouraged by comparison, or push yourself too hard in order to stand out. If you try to determine your value only through external evaluation, it becomes difficult for your heart to settle. In practical circumstances, this can point to delayed evaluation, results that are difficult to see, or receiving less attention than expected. However, the reversed position does not mean "failure." It can also be read as a time when you are not yet ready to receive the result, when you need to adjust how you present your achievements, or when it is useful to pause and confirm your original purpose.
LOVE
Six of Wands in love
Upright love
When the Six of Wands appears upright in a love reading, it is a card that makes it easier to receive a positive reaction from the other person and to feel encouraging signs in the relationship. Your attractiveness may be easier for the other person to notice, and something may happen that makes you feel, "We have become a little closer." With unrequited love, there is a possibility that the other person sees you favorably. This may appear in small ways, such as having more conversations, being approached by them, or receiving a compliment. Rather than trying too hard to impress them, interacting naturally and with confidence is more likely to create an even better impression. If you are already in a relationship, the connection may become more stable or receive support from the people around you. After overcoming something together, the two of you may develop greater confidence in the relationship. The other person may express gratitude or feel, "I'm glad I'm with you." If you hope for reconciliation, this is a time when your growth and changes may be easier for the other person to notice. However, rather than displaying your achievements in an effort to gain recognition, it is better to let them naturally see the calmer version of you. An opportunity to restore a positive impression may arise. If you are looking for a new relationship, your connections may broaden by going out into places where people gather, taking part in hobbies, or accepting introductions from friends. Having the courage to greet someone first or join a conversation may become the beginning of a new relationship.
Reversed love
When the Six of Wands appears reversed in a love reading, you may be caring too much about how the other person sees you, making it harder to build a natural relationship. With unrequited love, the desire to be liked or to make a good impression may become too strong, causing your emotions to rise and fall with every small reaction from the other person. A slightly late reply may make you anxious, or you may search for too much meaning in the way they behave. For now, rather than chasing their approval, it is better to value interacting in a way that feels natural to you. It is also possible that the other person does not actually think badly of you, yet you have already decided, "They probably are not interested in me." A lack of confidence may be making the distance between you feel greater than it really is. If you are already in a relationship, feelings such as "I want you to value me more" or "I want you to recognize me more" may be becoming stronger. You may feel that you are the one making all the effort, or you may seek the other person's reactions too much in order to confirm their affection. Before blaming them, it is important to calmly communicate what you actually need. For reconciliation, do not become overly impatient to make the other person recognize how you have changed. There is nothing wrong with showing a new version of yourself, but if the feeling becomes, "I've changed this much, so I want you to acknowledge me," it may feel burdensome to them. It is important first to feel your own change for yourself and regain your calm. If you are looking for a new relationship, you may be overly concerned with appearance, status, or how you are evaluated by others. Rather than forcing yourself to look impressive, value people you can talk to comfortably and relationships in which you can be yourself.
FEELINGS
Six of Wands in their feelings
Upright their feelings
When the Six of Wands appears upright as the other person's feelings, they may find you attractive and impressive and think, “This is a wonderful person,” or “I would like to become more involved with them.” They may even feel proud of your presence or regard you as someone others would also value. In love, there can also be a strong desire on their side to be seen positively by you. Along with affection, they may want to show you their best side, be recognized by you, or win your attention. This can appear in behavior such as telling you about things they have achieved or are good at, trying to be someone you can rely on, showing off a little in front of you, or approaching you more actively. If you are already together, they may value the relationship itself and feel comfortable acknowledging it naturally around others. If the other person strongly needs admiration, however, “I like you” can become mixed with “I want your approval.” Notice whether they are not only showing themselves to you, but also taking a genuine interest in your feelings and circumstances. That can make the quality of their feelings easier to understand.
Reversed their feelings
When the Six of Wands appears reversed as the other person's feelings, they may be very conscious of you while worrying, “How am I being seen?” Even if affection is present, they may lack confidence and become overly focused on whether they are being appreciated. Because they want you to recognize them or find them attractive, they may try too hard to present themselves in a good light. In the opposite direction, they may withdraw with the thought, “Someone like me would never have a chance,” even though they are genuinely interested. This can appear as more boasting, sensitivity to your reactions, comparing themselves with other people, coming closer after receiving praise, or pulling away when their confidence drops. The common theme is heightened sensitivity to evaluation. Even if they look confident on the outside, they may be paying close attention to your reaction underneath. Still, affection and a need for approval should not automatically be treated as the same thing. Notice whether they also show interest in your feelings and circumstances; that gives a clearer picture of the substance of the relationship.
WORK
Six of Wands in work
Upright work
When the Six of Wands appears upright in a work reading, it is a period when your efforts are likely to be recognized and your results become more visible. Work you have steadily continued may be acknowledged, and you may receive positive evaluation from supervisors or colleagues. In a project, it can indicate achieving a goal or succeeding. You may also be relied upon by the people around you or be asked to take a leading or representative role. It is important not to hide your abilities too much and to use them confidently when needed. For a job change, there is a possibility of making a good impression in interviews or selection processes. It is good to communicate your achievements and strengths concretely without excessive hesitation. However, there is no need to exaggerate yourself. Confidence grounded in facts gives the other person a greater sense of trust. In workplace relationships, trust is likely to grow, and others may rely on you more often. You may take on a leadership role. However, it is important not to think that you achieved everything through your own power alone, and not to forget gratitude toward the people around you. A willingness to share success can lead to even greater trust.
Reversed work
When the Six of Wands appears reversed in a work reading, it represents a state where effort and recognition are not connecting well. You may feel that you are working hard but the results are difficult to see, that it takes time to be recognized, or that the value of your work is not reaching the people around you. On the other hand, there is also a possibility that you are overestimating your own results. Even if you think, "I've done this much, so I should be recognized," what you have produced may not quite match what the people around you are actually looking for. Rather than focusing only on evaluation itself, confirming what is expected of you can make the areas for improvement easier to see. For a job change, both lack of confidence and overstatement require care. If you make yourself too small, your strengths will not come across, but exaggerating your achievements can also damage trust. It is better to communicate what you can do, what you have experienced, and what you want to develop next based on facts. In the workplace environment, leadership may be going in circles. Even if you believe you are moving things in a good direction, your understanding may differ from that of the people around you. Rather than focusing only on standing in front, listening to other people's opinions can help bring the flow back into balance. Regarding goal achievement, this is less a complete failure than a state of "needing a little more adjustment." Check for insufficient preparation or weak finishing, and revise the plan if necessary. By using the current stagnation as a period of adjustment, you can connect it to more reliable results.
MONEY
Six of Wands in money
Upright money
When the Six of Wands appears upright in a financial reading, it represents a flow in which your effort and recognition are more likely to lead to income. Results at work may be reflected in compensation, or side work and other activities may become known to more people and begin producing revenue. Regarding income, possibilities include a raise, increased compensation, or more requests for your work, with results beginning to become visible in the numbers. However, rather than a large amount of money suddenly appearing, the image is of your work and abilities being recognized, with the flow of money improving as a result. With spending, expenses on work tools, learning, or things that improve your abilities and appeal can have a positive meaning. On the other hand, it is also important not to become overly generous with money simply because you feel successful. With investments or major decisions, remember to remain cautious precisely because things are going well. Do not think too strongly, "It worked before, so the next one will be fine too." Checking the basis for your decision and the risks involved will help keep your finances stable. With saving, this is a time when you can see the results of your accumulation. You may move closer to your target amount or become better at managing money in a stable way. Recognizing small achievements will give you greater strength to continue.
Reversed money
When the Six of Wands appears reversed in a financial reading, it is worth reconsidering whether you are trying to prove your value through money. The desire to look better than others or to appear successful can lead to unreasonable spending. Regarding income, it can indicate that your effort has not yet been reflected in compensation. You may be recognized at work without receiving a raise, or continue an activity while monetization takes time, creating a slight delay between results and income. With shopping, be careful not to choose unnecessarily expensive things because of comparison with others or increase spending for appearances. It is important to judge by whether you truly need something and whether it will enrich your life. With investments, do not let previous success or other people's success stories influence you too strongly. Avoid judgments such as, "It worked last time, so this time will be fine too," or "Everyone is buying it, so it must be safe." Check the information and risks calmly. With saving, you may be losing motivation because the results are difficult to see. However, small amounts still take shape when you continue accumulating them. Setting goals that suit your own life instead of comparing yourself with others leads to more stable finances.
RELATIONSHIPS
Six of Wands in relationships
Upright relationships
When the Six of Wands appears upright in a relationship reading, it represents a flow in which you are trusted and recognized by the people around you. Your actions and way of thinking may be appreciated, and you may naturally find yourself in a central role. In friendship, you may be thanked more often or asked for advice. Within the relationships you have built, people may come to think, "I can rely on this person." Within the family, your efforts and role may be recognized by those around you. Even if it is not usually expressed in words, you may realize that someone has been noticing how hard you have worked. At work or in a group, this is a time when you can use your abilities well as an organizer or leader. However, rather than trying to make everyone follow you, it is important to move forward while drawing out the strengths of the whole group. Sharing success instead of keeping it for yourself will also make your relationships better.
Reversed relationships
When the Six of Wands appears reversed in a relationship reading, you may be overly concerned with your evaluation or position among the people around you. Paying too much attention to who is receiving attention or who is being recognized can make relationships feel a little more difficult. In friendship, you may compare yourself with someone else and feel discouraged, or you may talk too much about your own achievements because you want people to understand them. Try checking whether your attention has shifted away from the relationship itself and toward how you are being seen. Within the family, the feeling, "I want them to understand how hard I'm trying," may become stronger. However, simply waiting for the other person to notice can sometimes increase your loneliness. If necessary, it is also important to calmly express how you feel. At work or in a group, both extremes are possible: standing out too much and creating distance from others, or lacking confidence so much that you cannot speak and become isolated. For now, rather than focusing on whether to stand out or withdraw, try to match your pace naturally with the people around you. It is also possible that the people around you actually trust you, but you alone feel that you are not being recognized. Looking back to see whether you have overlooked small signs of gratitude or trust from others may be helpful.
YES OR NO
Yes or No for Six of Wands
Upright judgment

- What could change the answer

Reversed judgment
- Judgment
- No
- Reason
- The Six of Wands reversed shows expected recognition or results being difficult to obtain and confidence or momentum becoming unstable. With the current approach, the desired result is hard to reach, so the card is naturally read as No for now.
- What could change the answer
- The reading can change by looking at what is actually lacking and adjusting the approach rather than using other people's approval as the only standard. Rebuilding skill or preparation and accumulating small results can open the way back toward Yes.
MESSAGE FROM THE CARD
Advice from Six of Wands
Upright
What you have built up until now is gradually beginning to take shape. If someone recognizes your effort or you receive a positive response, this is a time when you can honestly allow yourself to be happy about it. You do not need to make your own effort smaller just to appear humble. When someone praises you, receive it. And tell yourself too, "You worked hard to get this far." That confidence becomes the strength you need for the next step. There are probably also people and circumstances behind your present results that helped support you. If you continue without forgetting your gratitude, this success will not remain a one-time event, but will become experience that lights the road ahead. It is all right to hold your head high. Then carry that confidence into your next step.
Reversed
Right now, this may be a time to look at how far you yourself have come rather than how much recognition you receive from someone else. When you do not receive the evaluation you hoped for, you may become anxious or feel that you need to work even harder. But even if there is little applause from the people around you, the effort you have accumulated does not disappear. Conversely, if you are seeking recognition above everything else, try pausing once. Was praise really what you wanted most? Or was it a way of living you could accept for yourself, or results that felt true to who you are? There are also times when you have already worked hard enough but still fail to recognize it yourself. Try cultivating even a small inner sense of, "I have made it this far," instead of relying only on outside evaluation. You do not need to rush toward victory. By adjusting your posture now and recovering your own standards, your next step can become much more certain.
