SYMBOL & STORY
What Six of Pentacles represents
The Six of Pentacles is a card about "how to share what you have." In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, a prosperous-looking figure holds a set of scales in one hand while distributing coins with the other to people kneeling before him. The scales evoke judgment and balance, while the coins can be read not only as money, but also as practical resources such as time, knowledge, effort, opportunities, and a sense of security. Arthur Waite described this figure as a successful merchant distributing money to people in need. In divination, he also listed meanings such as gifts, gratification, attention, and present prosperity. Modern tarot commonly expands these ideas further into support, generosity, fair distribution, and mutual assistance. However, the giver and the receivers in this scene do not stand in the same position. The power to decide who receives how much belongs to the person holding the coins. For that reason, this card asks us to consider not only simple "kindness," but also the responsibility of the person who helps, the dignity of the person receiving help, and the power dynamics that can arise within assistance. The scales do not necessarily suggest the simple equality of giving everyone exactly the same amount. They can also be understood as the practical balance of giving the right thing, to the person who needs it, in an appropriate form. If we read the numbered sequence as a story, the Five of Pentacles depicted lack, hardship, and isolation. In the Six of Pentacles that follows, a hand of support reaches in from outside. Even in a difficult situation, receiving appropriate help can make it possible to rebuild practical life. The card can therefore also be seen as one scene within a process of recovery. This card values both "giving" and "receiving." When you have room to spare, you support someone else; when you are struggling, you accept someone else's support. Rather than being fixed permanently on one side, the roles circulate. That movement is one of the card's central themes.

UPRIGHT
Upright meaning
Share the support that is needed, and let abundance circulate.
- Assistance
- Generosity
- Appropriate distribution
- Receiving support
- Circulation of trust
The Six of Pentacles upright represents needed support and resources reaching the places where they are needed. Sometimes you may be the one helping someone else, and sometimes you may be the one receiving help. Which role applies depends on the question and the surrounding cards. Mentally, this can indicate having enough emotional room to reach out and help another person. Conversely, it can also represent the openness to think, "It is all right for me to receive help right now." Not treating support from others as weakness, and being able to accept what you need, are important meanings of this card as well. In practical circumstances, the themes may include assistance, cooperation, introductions, compensation, support systems, lending and borrowing, gifts, or sharing information. Money itself may move, but the card can also appear as someone teaching you what they know, giving you their time, or helping you with work. In terms of action, you are encouraged to share what you have within a range that does not overburden you. However, this is different from stepping in more than necessary simply because you want to help. Thinking about what the other person truly needs is one of the forms of wisdom symbolized by the scales in this card. For example, in work, you may receive advice from someone with more experience. In love, the other person may show care not only through words but through actions. Financially, you may receive appropriate compensation or assistance. In relationships, people may naturally help one another with the attitude, "We all need help sometimes." These are all situations in which this card commonly appears. The ideal expressed by this card is circulation, not one-sided control. Even if you are the giver now, someday you may become the receiver. The reverse can also be true. Over the long term, it is important to check whether support is circulating in a sustainable and healthy way.
REVERSED
Reversed meaning
Review any imbalance in the way you give and receive.
- Unfairness
- Expectation of return
- Greed
- Envy
- Dependence
The Six of Pentacles reversed represents an imbalance between giving and receiving. Upright, support and resources were circulating appropriately. Reversed, the burden may become concentrated on one person, or giving may become mixed with an expectation of receiving something in return. Waite associated the reversed position with desire, greed, envy, and jealousy. In modern practical readings, these can be understood as realistic emotional states such as envying what someone else has, wanting someone to give you more, or thinking, "I gave this much, so they should give something back." If you are in the giving position, you may be trying to control the other person even though you believe you are being kind, or unconsciously expecting something in return with the thought, "After everything I have done for them." You may also be doing more for others than they actually need because helping them has become a way to confirm your own value. If you are in the receiving position, you may be depending too much on someone else. Conversely, you may be refusing even necessary support because you think, "I must not inconvenience anyone." In either case, the healthy circulation of the upright card has weakened or stopped. In practical circumstances, the card can appear as unfair division of responsibilities, inadequate compensation, lending and borrowing money, or a hierarchy created through assistance. At work, you may be carrying the workload alone. In love, one person may be the only one making sacrifices. Financially, resentment may remain between the person who lent and the person who borrowed. These are common situations for this card. You may also find yourself comparing your life with someone else's and thinking, "That person is the only one who gets everything." Wanting something is not wrong in itself. However, when attention is focused only on dissatisfaction and envy, it can become difficult to notice what you already have. The reversed Six of Pentacles is not telling you to stop being kind. It asks you to review the balance of who is giving what and who is receiving what, so that support can continue in a healthier way over time.
LOVE
Six of Pentacles in love
Upright love
In love, the Six of Pentacles often shows affection expressed through practical acts of care. Rather than words alone, love may appear as making time, listening to a concern, or helping when the other person is in difficulty. With unrequited love, the other person may be kind to you or show that they care about how you are doing. However, the Six of Pentacles often represents kindness itself, so being treated gently does not automatically mean romantic feelings are present. It is helpful to look at how the person treats others and whether there is any interaction that is especially personal or unique between the two of you. If you are already in a relationship, this can show a supportive partnership. Helping each other when one person is busy, listening when the other needs to talk, or cooperating with practical aspects of life can nurture a quiet but reassuring form of love. If one person is not doing all the giving, the relationship is relatively well balanced. For reconciliation, you may see signs that the other person is willing to meet you halfway or show consideration. However, if the relationship is restored only because of feelings such as, "I want to help them," or, "I feel sorry for them," the relationship may lack equality. It is important to look not at old debts or guilt, but at whether the two of you can support one another as you are now. With new encounters, this card can indicate a connection with someone sincere, caring, and kind in practical ways. Rather than being overly reluctant to receive their kindness, returning your own feelings naturally can help the relationship grow.
Reversed love
In love, the reversed Six of Pentacles can indicate an imbalance in affection and effort. If one person continues giving while the other accepts that effort as a matter of course, dissatisfaction may gradually accumulate. With unrequited love, you may be doing too much because you want the other person to like you. Waiting constantly for their messages, adapting everything to their schedule, or being unable to say no when they ask for something can all be signs that you are prioritizing them too far above your own feelings. You may also feel stronger jealousy or envy when you see the attention or time the other person gives to someone else. You do not need to blame yourself for those feelings. Looking at what you truly want underneath them can help you recover your balance. If you are already in a relationship, there may be an imbalance in money, time, housework, communication, or emotional care. If you feel, "I'm the only one trying," it is better to begin putting small frustrations into words before the resentment grows too large. For reconciliation, it is important to check whether sympathy, guilt, or dependence is what is holding the relationship together. Returning only because, "I feel sorry for them," or, "I have to help them," can pull you back into the same pattern as before. If you reconcile, it is important that each of you can stand on your own while still supporting one another. With new encounters, caution may be needed around someone whose kindness is strongly tied to expectations of repayment, or someone who tends to create a one-sided dynamic around money or conditions. Avoid creating large debts or obligations early on, and take time to observe their character.
FEELINGS
Six of Pentacles in their feelings
Upright their feelings
When the Six of Pentacles appears upright as the other person's feelings, they may care about you and want to do something helpful for you. Affection may be expressed through practical action such as making time, listening, offering assistance, or supporting you when something is difficult. This can certainly appear as romantic interest, but it can also describe friendship and simple kindness. Being treated kindly by itself does not prove romance. It helps to notice whether their care toward you is different from how they treat everyone else. With unrequited feelings, they may view your interactions positively and feel that they want to return what they receive from you. A relationship where both people naturally give and receive is developing on healthy ground. In an existing relationship, they are likely to want mutual support rather than one-sided devotion. Helping you in practical ways may be one of the clearest ways they express affection. The balance between giving and receiving matters greatly with this card. If both of you can accept kindness and also give it naturally in return, trust and affection are likely to grow in a stable way.
Reversed their feelings
When the Six of Pentacles appears reversed as the other person's feelings, they may care about you while mixing that care with expectation of something in return. They may think, “I have done this much, so I want to matter to you too.” If they are usually the one giving, they may feel that they are making all the effort and receiving too little back. The opposite is also possible: they may be relying heavily on your kindness without offering much in return. With unrequited feelings, they may become overly helpful because they want to be liked, then watch your response too closely. Affection can become mixed with a desire to move the relationship in a preferred direction. In an existing relationship, they may feel that money, time, household effort, contact, or emotional support is uneven. The issue may not be absence of love, but dissatisfaction with fairness. The important question is what they expect to receive in exchange for what they give. When those expectations are spoken about openly and the balance is adjusted, affection can become more straightforward and less conditional.
WORK
Six of Pentacles in work
Upright work
In work, the Six of Pentacles indicates the possibility of receiving cooperation or support. A supervisor or senior colleague may give you advice, a coworker may help with a task, or someone may provide information or an opportunity that you need. In the workplace environment, role sharing tends to function relatively well. You may become able to ask others about work you had been carrying alone, or you may naturally help someone who is struggling, allowing support to circulate within the team. For a job change, introductions, recommendations, personal connections, or support systems may prove useful. Rather than trying to solve everything alone, consulting someone you trust may open a path. Regarding goal achievement, the key is not only your own effort, but also using the cooperation of people around you. If you are already in an experienced position, you may be asked to teach a junior colleague or support someone else's growth. In evaluation and compensation, there is a possibility of receiving a return that matches your effort. This may come not only as money such as salary or allowances, but also as appreciation, recognition, or new work opportunities. However, you do not need to accept everything simply because you are helpful. "Helping" and "carrying everything" are not the same. It is also important to check whether the burden is being divided appropriately between you and the people around you.
Reversed work
In work, the reversed Six of Pentacles often points to imbalance in workload or recognition. You may feel that you carry more work than everyone else, that your compensation is too low for what you do, or that you continually help others without receiving support in return. In the workplace environment, you may be relied on too heavily. If work keeps being given to you with comments such as, "You can handle it," or you are carrying extra burdens in an atmosphere where it is difficult to refuse, it may be time to review the division of responsibilities. Conversely, if you are in a teaching or supervisory role, be careful not to help too much. If you do everything for the other person, they lose the opportunity to think for themselves. Supporting only the parts that are necessary while leaving some things for them to handle can also be important. For a job change, carefully check salary, working conditions, and responsibilities. If you focus only on attractive conditions, you may later discover that the responsibilities and burden are much larger than you expected. In terms of evaluation, you may find yourself thinking, "Why is that person being recognized instead of me?" Envy can be exhausting if it becomes the main focus, so it may help to organize your own achievements and responsibilities concretely and communicate them to the people who evaluate your work when necessary. When this card appears, it is also important not to take on work simply because you are kind. Your time and physical energy are limited resources too.
MONEY
Six of Pentacles in money
Upright money
In financial matters, the Six of Pentacles represents a relatively stable flow of money, with funds more likely to reach the places where they are needed. You may receive compensation, assistance, a refund, or a gift, or you may be the one providing financial support to someone else. In terms of income, there is a possibility of receiving compensation, allowances, or temporary income that reflects your effort. Something you have done to help another person may also return to you in a practical form. With spending, you may spend more money for the sake of other people. Gifts, donations, or support for family members can be part of a positive flow when they are given in a way you genuinely feel comfortable with. However, there is no need to overextend yourself simply to be seen as a good person. For investments and shopping, rather than chasing an extreme profit, it is important to look at the balance between price and value. Instead of asking only whether you personally will benefit, consider whether something will remain useful over time and whether the cost is fair. With saving, this is a period when it may be easier to balance necessary spending with setting aside what should be kept. Rather than simply holding on to money, use it when necessary and save when you have room. Keeping that circulation in mind can support greater stability.
Reversed money
In financial matters, the reversed Six of Pentacles calls for caution around lending, borrowing, financial assistance, and imbalances in spending. You may spend too much for other people or pay because you feel unable to refuse, while still carrying the thought, "After everything I paid, I want something back." In terms of income, compensation may be smaller than expected, payment may be delayed, or you may feel that the return does not match the amount of work involved. If the terms are unclear, confirm the amount and the timing of payment. With spending, be careful about support for others or gifts. Money spent because you think, "If I do not do this, they may dislike me," can make your own life more difficult. Money is not the only way to show how you feel. For investments and shopping, desire may cloud judgment through thoughts such as, "I want more," or, "I do not want to be the only one losing out." Rather than reacting anxiously after hearing that someone else made a profit, calmly check whether the decision is appropriate for your own circumstances. You may also feel envious when looking at someone else's income or lifestyle. If comparison is increasing your dissatisfaction, begin by organizing your own income and expenses and the amount you genuinely need. That will make realistic goals easier to see. Conversely, there may be assistance or support systems you genuinely could use but are refusing out of excessive hesitation. You do not need to reject help you truly need. It is all right to accept appropriate support when it is available.
RELATIONSHIPS
Six of Pentacles in relationships
Upright relationships
In relationships, the Six of Pentacles represents mutual assistance and the circulation of trust. There may be opportunities for someone to reach out when you are struggling, or for you to become a source of support for someone else. In friendship, warm exchanges can arise through listening to someone's concerns, receiving help yourself, or sharing knowledge or possessions. Rather than being overly reluctant to accept kindness, simply saying, "Thank you," can also help the relationship grow. Within the family, practical mutual support may become a theme, such as financial assistance, housework, or help with everyday life. It is important for people to support one another when they can while making sure the burden does not become concentrated on one person. At work, it may be easier to build good supportive relationships even when people hold different positions. A supervisor may support a subordinate, or a senior colleague may teach someone more junior, creating cooperation appropriate to each person's role. This card reminds us that the giver and the receiver remain equal in dignity. When helping someone, respect the other person's dignity. When receiving help, do not make yourself smaller than necessary. That attitude leads to trust that can last.
Reversed relationships
In relationships, the reversed Six of Pentacles can indicate that mutual support has become one-sided. Perhaps you are always the one listening to problems while no one listens to you, always adjusting your schedule, or continually receiving more requests from others. If so, it may be time to review the balance of the relationship. In friendship, resentment such as, "After everything I have done for them," can build up. Looking back at whether there was an unconscious expectation attached to your kindness may help you sort through your feelings. Within the family, financial matters, housework, caregiving, or emotional support may have become concentrated on one person. If you are carrying everything with the thought, "If I do not do it, no one will," consider whether even part of the role can be shared. At work, differences in status can become more pronounced. Even when a relationship appears kind on the surface, caution is needed if you feel, "They helped me, so I cannot say no." It is important to notice whether assistance is being used as a way to bind or control someone. You may also compare yourself with other people and envy their relationships or position. Yet beneath that feeling may be a straightforward wish such as, "I want to be recognized too," or, "I want to be treated as someone important." Taking necessary distance does not mean you dislike the other person. Adjusting the relationship to a distance where neither person has to strain themselves can sometimes help it last longer.

MESSAGE FROM THE CARD
Advice from Six of Pentacles
Upright
A flow of mutual support may be forming around you now. Do not try to manage everything entirely by yourself; when you need help, consider borrowing the strength of the people around you. Receiving support is not weakness. Trusting someone's goodwill and allowing yourself to accept it is also an important kind of strength. And if you have a little room to spare, you may choose to share some of it with someone else. It does not have to be money. Offering a kind word, sharing something you know, or giving a little of your time can have great meaning for someone who needs it. However, you do not need to give so much that you wear yourself down. Look at what you have and what the other person genuinely needs, and choose a form of support that is sustainable. Giving and receiving: when both can circulate naturally, a little more security and abundance can spread through your world.
Reversed
Now may be a good time to review the balance between giving and receiving. Are you working too hard for someone else? Or do you truly need support but remain unable to accept help because you are too hesitant? If you find yourself thinking, "I do this much, so I want them to understand," or, "I wish I were as fortunate as that person," you do not need to suppress those feelings as something bad. They may be showing you what you actually need. What matters is not being controlled by dissatisfaction or envy, but noticing the wish underneath it. Do you want to be recognized? Do you need rest? Do you want someone to help you? Once you understand what you truly feel, the action you need also becomes easier to see. When helping someone, check that you are not overextending yourself. When receiving help, do not make yourself smaller than necessary. Mutual support is not a hierarchy; it is a circulation. Something you receive now may someday be passed on to someone else in a different form. Bring your kindness and strength into a healthier balance, so that they can continue without exhausting you.
