SYMBOL & STORY
What Seven of Swords represents
The Seven of Swords is a card about trying to find another way by using your mind rather than confronting a situation head-on. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, a single figure is shown carrying five swords away from what looks like a camp. Two swords remain behind, and people can be seen in the distance. The figure appears either to be moving quietly so as not to be heard or looking back with the sense that the plan has gone well. From this imagery, modern tarot commonly interprets the card through meanings such as strategy, secret action, finding a way around something, and acting out of sight. However, Arthur Waite himself listed meanings including plans, attempts, wishes, hopes, and confidence, while also connecting the card with conflict and unstable plans. For that reason, this is not a card that can easily be reduced to a single simple meaning, and it does not need to be read only as theft or betrayal. An important point is that the figure does not carry away all seven swords. Five have been taken, but two are left behind. From this, the card is sometimes interpreted as indicating that even when a plan works to some degree, it is not complete; that something may be lost in exchange for achieving a goal; or that unresolved issues may be left behind. Swords are the suit associated with thought, words, judgment, information, and strategy. In the Seven, intelligence is used to ask, "How can I get through this?" when force alone will not solve the situation. Rather than fighting directly, you wait for the right timing. You do not reveal everything, but move with only the information you need. You consider a different method. There are situations in which that kind of caution is useful. At the same time, the card is not simply approving the idea that "being clever is enough." It also asks where the boundary lies between intelligence and cunning, caution and deception, a secret that protects you and a secret that deceives someone else. The Five of Swords depicts the complicated situation that remains after winning and losing have emerged within conflict, while the Seven of Swords can be seen as trying to achieve a goal by avoiding direct confrontation in the first place. After the Six of Swords leaves a difficult place behind, the Seven uses thought to consider how to proceed, and the next card, the Eight of Swords, moves into a state where thought itself becomes a restraint. Seen in this sequence, the Seven of Swords can also be understood as "the stage of trying to think your way through." When this card appears, it is worth asking, "Do I really need to break through this head-on right now?" and, "Is there another way?" At the same time, also check, "Am I leaving something important behind by using this method?" and, "Will I still be able to accept this action when I look back on it later?"

UPRIGHT
Upright meaning
Use your intelligence to move forward, but do not leave behind what truly matters.
- Strategy, resourcefulness, secret action, careful planning, partial success
The Seven of Swords upright represents a state in which you are trying to get through a situation by using intelligence and ingenuity rather than confronting the problem directly. Instead of forcing your way through, you may need to observe how the other person moves, wait for the right timing, or search for another path. On a mental level, you are acting while thinking carefully. You may be asking yourself, "How much should I say?", "Is it safe to act now?", or, "Can I avoid the problem by taking this route?" There are times when not revealing everything is necessary in order to protect yourself. In practical circumstances, the card can indicate plans that have not yet been made public, preparations taking place behind the scenes, or someone's secret actions. Examples include quietly carrying out a job search without telling the people around you, watching the other person's reaction before confessing your feelings, or preparing a new project without letting competitors know. However, this card also contains the element of "not everything goes perfectly" or "something gets left behind." Even if five swords can be carried away, two still remain. You may be able to avoid part of the problem while leaving the root issue unresolved. In terms of action, gathering information, laying groundwork, reviewing your plan, and reading the timing can all help. However, if the method leans too far toward deceiving someone or hiding important facts, it can later become a problem of trust. For example, in a work question, the card can be read as, "Rather than forcing the same method as before, look for another route." In love, it may indicate, "For now, you are carefully closing the distance while watching the other person's reaction." In relationships, it may suggest, "You may have avoided conflict, but something left unsaid still remains in your heart." The Seven of Swords is not a card that recommends cunning. Yet simply telling everyone everything honestly is not always the right answer either. It is important to think of a method that protects you while still allowing you to look back later without regret.
REVERSED
Reversed meaning
Do not carry everything alone; speak honestly about what is necessary and put things in order.
- Exposure, advice, revising the plan, saying too much, becoming honest
The Seven of Swords reversed represents hidden matters coming into the open, or reaching a point where a plan you have been pursuing alone needs to be reconsidered. The secrecy or strategy of the upright position may no longer be sustainable, bringing the realization, "This will be difficult if I continue like this." In modern tarot, common interpretations include secrets being exposed, plans failing, guilt, and being forced to face a problem you had been avoiding. At the same time, Waite included meanings such as advice and counsel for the reversed position, along with meanings related to slander and excessive talk. For that reason, the reversal can also be seen as a change from "thinking alone" toward "hearing someone else's words" or "words going out into the world." On a mental level, you may be tired of trying to handle everything by yourself. Talking with someone about anxiety or uncertainty you have been keeping hidden may help organize the situation. Conversely, anxiety may cause you to say too much or become overly influenced by rumors and other people's opinions. In practical circumstances, the card can indicate hidden matters becoming known, flaws in a plan being discovered, or circumstances that had been vague becoming clearer. Even if this seems troublesome at first, seeing the problem may make it possible to correct it. In terms of action, it may be time to stop relying only on indirect methods and speak where speaking is necessary. It can also be useful not to insist on your own judgment alone, but to receive advice from someone you trust. However, choose carefully whom you confide in. The card does not mean you should tell everyone everything. There is a difference between telling the necessary person what they need to know and spreading secrets or rumors impulsively. The Seven of Swords reversed is not only a card of "you can no longer hide it." It also says, "Rather than continuing to hide it, it may be better to organize the matter and handle it again in a more appropriate way."
LOVE
Seven of Swords in love
Upright love
When the Seven of Swords appears upright in a love reading, it can represent a state in which you or the other person is not yet showing all of your true feelings. This does not necessarily mean there is no affection. Someone may simply be afraid of getting hurt, want to check the other person's reaction first, or feel that now is not yet the right time to act. With unrequited love, you may be closing the distance carefully while watching how the other person responds. Rather than confessing your feelings immediately, you may prefer to increase conversation and feel out their reactions before moving forward. However, if everything becomes a game of strategy, your genuine feelings may stop reaching the other person. If you are already in a relationship, things that are difficult to say or feelings that are being hidden can become important themes. There is no need to jump to the conclusion that this means infidelity or betrayal. It may instead refer to something being withheld because you do not want to worry the other person, something you are swallowing in order to avoid an argument, or true feelings that you have not yet been able to sort out. For reconciliation, the card can indicate cautiously looking for an opportunity while watching how the other person is doing. You may be checking social media, trying to learn about them through mutual acquaintances, or searching for a natural reason to contact them. However, rather than spending all your time trying to read the situation, eventually there will need to be an honest exchange of words. With new encounters, this can indicate a connection with someone who seems a little mysterious or whose background you do not yet understand well. Even if you feel attracted to them, do not rush to trust too quickly; watch whether their words and actions are consistent.
Reversed love
When the Seven of Swords appears reversed in a love reading, hidden feelings or discomfort are more likely to come to the surface. It may be time to talk about something that has been left ambiguous. With unrequited love, a relationship that has not progressed because you have only been trying to read the other person's reactions may begin to change. Receiving encouragement from someone else or showing your own feelings a little more honestly may shift the flow. If you are already in a relationship, things you had been leaving unsaid are more likely to surface. This does not only refer to major secrets such as another romantic involvement. It can also include dissatisfaction, loneliness, money, views about the future, and other feelings you have been swallowing. Rather than beginning with blame, first confirm what is actually happening. For reconciliation, it may be difficult to return while leaving the old problems vague. By properly looking back at why you separated and what was painful, you can reduce the risk of repeating the same thing. Advice from a third party may help, but do not judge the other person based only on what people around you say. With new encounters, something you did not previously understand about the other person may come into view. If you feel even a slight sense of discomfort, take time to confirm things rather than rushing to deepen the relationship.
FEELINGS
Seven of Swords in their feelings
Upright their feelings
When the Seven of Swords appears upright as the other person's feelings, they may be conscious of you while not wanting to reveal those feelings openly. They may be watching the situation carefully while trying to protect their own position or sense of safety. Even when affection exists, circumstances such as the workplace, people around you, or past experience may make them feel that direct expression is risky. Their feelings can therefore appear in indirect or difficult-to-read behavior. There is also a possibility that they are withholding something about the relationship or trying to manage the situation in a way that suits them. However, this one card alone is not enough to conclude that they are lying or betraying you. With unrequited feelings, they may be carefully measuring the distance between you while watching how you respond. In an existing relationship, the question may be whether something difficult to say is being kept inside. The important point is less “something is hidden” than why they feel the need to hide it. Ask whether the relationship feels safe enough for honesty, or whether both of you are still proceeding with caution.
Reversed their feelings
When the Seven of Swords appears reversed as the other person's feelings, they may be beginning to reveal something they had kept hidden. They may be tired of keeping their feelings or circumstances to themselves and want to become more honest. If they had been concealing affection, small signs may begin to show more clearly. They may also want to explain an issue that had previously been left vague. They may be consulting friends or people around them in order to understand their own feelings. Hearing another person's perspective can help them sort out what they want. However, the reversed card can also show saying too much or revealing something impulsively. They may speak honestly in the moment and then become unsure afterward. The important thing is not simply that a secret comes out, but whether honest and responsible behavior follows. When words and actions begin to match, the relationship itself can become more transparent than before.
WORK
Seven of Swords in work
Upright work
When the Seven of Swords appears upright in a work reading, strategic action becomes important. Rather than confronting someone with a correct argument head-on, it may work better to proceed while paying attention to the other person's position and the situation in the workplace. In the workplace environment, the card can indicate circumstances that have not yet been made public or coordination taking place behind the scenes. Someone may be laying groundwork, information may be shared with only part of the organization, or there may be background circumstances behind a decision that have not yet been explained. If this makes you uneasy, confirm facts rather than reacting to rumors. For a job change, the card can indicate quietly preparing without letting your current workplace know. Researching openings, improving your resume, and gaining qualifications or skills are all well suited to this kind of behind-the-scenes preparation. However, be careful not to leave behind your responsibilities or a proper handover when you eventually leave. Regarding goal achievement, progress may come from changing the method rather than insisting on a direct approach. Instead of competing in exactly the same way as everyone else, it may be effective to find a method that only you can use. Still, check that the shortcut has not caused you to skip a step that was actually necessary. In terms of evaluation, your work may not be visible enough to the people around you. Quiet effort does not always communicate itself, so when necessary, it is important to appropriately share your results and progress. In workplace relationships, be careful with rumors and with how you handle information. Thinking about who should know what is necessary, but becoming excessively suspicious of everyone is not.
Reversed work
When the Seven of Swords appears reversed in a work reading, you may need to reconsider your plan or the way you have been proceeding. A hidden problem or lack of preparation may be discovered, creating a point where you need to pause and adjust. In the workplace environment, insufficient information sharing or previously hidden circumstances may become clear. Rumors or someone's remarks may also cause a problem to grow larger. Rather than judging only from something you heard from another person, confirm the facts for yourself. For a job change, rather than thinking alone indefinitely, you may gain a new perspective by asking someone you trust for their opinion. Reviewing your preferred conditions and your own strengths can help you see a more realistic path. Regarding goal achievement, you may have skipped a necessary step because you were trying to take a shortcut, or preparation may have been insufficient. If the issue has been found at this stage, it can still be corrected. Rather than treating a revision as a failure, see it as an opportunity to put the plan into better order. In terms of evaluation, there may be a gap between your actual achievements and what the people around you can see. Appropriately sharing your work with the people who need to know, or honestly asking about something you do not understand, can help rebuild trust. In workplace relationships, handle secrets and rumors carefully. Do not become someone who spreads them, and do not assume that something you heard is automatically true. Keep your attention on your own work and on facts.
MONEY
Seven of Swords in money
Upright money
When the Seven of Swords appears upright in a financial reading, you are being asked to gather information and make careful plans about money. It is safer to check conditions and numbers before acting rather than making decisions on impulse. In terms of income, the card can indicate quietly preparing a side job or another source of income. Even if it is not yet time to tell the people around you, it can be useful to test the possibility on a small scale. With spending, pay attention to small expenses you may not even be consciously noticing. Purchases that seem harmless because "it's only a little" can accumulate. Keeping records may reveal areas you had overlooked. For investments, it is important not to believe only information that is convenient or appealing. The more a story sounds like secret information or an opportunity where "only you will benefit," the more carefully you should check it. Investigate whether there are hidden conditions or risks that are not immediately visible. With shopping, comparison and advance research are helpful. Rather than choosing the cheapest option automatically, consider quality, maintenance costs, warranties, and other conditions so that you can make a better choice overall. With saving, this is a time to prioritize protecting your own sense of security rather than spending money to impress other people. Quiet preparation can increase the options available to you in the future.
Reversed money
When the Seven of Swords appears reversed in a financial reading, you need to look directly at money-related issues or vague numbers you may have been avoiding. In terms of income, you may need to reconsider expected earnings or a side-business plan. You may discover that the profit is lower than expected or that you failed to account for necessary costs. However, if you notice the problem early enough, it can still be corrected. With spending, wasteful expenses or fixed costs you had not noticed may become visible. It may be helpful to review subscriptions, small recurring purchases, fees, and similar expenses. For investments, rather than relying on your own judgment alone, refer to trustworthy information or professional advice. However, avoid simply following rumors or advice that lacks a solid basis. Compare several sources and confirm the details yourself. With shopping, you may notice conditions you overlooked because you were attracted only by the low price. Checking return policies, shipping costs, warranties, and maintenance expenses can give you greater peace of mind. With saving, looking honestly at the current numbers is the first step toward improvement. Rather than avoiding them because they make you anxious, understanding where you stand allows you to think about concrete measures.
RELATIONSHIPS
Seven of Swords in relationships
Upright relationships
When the Seven of Swords appears upright in a relationship reading, distance and the handling of information become important themes. You do not need to tell everything to everyone, but it is worth checking whether hiding something is creating strain in the relationship. In friendship, either you or the other person may not yet be able to say everything honestly. This does not have to come from bad intentions; they may simply not have sorted out their feelings yet. Rather than forcing them to speak, create an atmosphere where they can talk when they are ready. Within the family, someone may be hiding worries or true feelings because they do not want to cause concern. However, carrying something alone for too long can deepen misunderstandings. Begin sharing little by little, starting with what feels possible to talk about. In workplace and social relationships, casual words can spread farther than expected. Keeping other people's secrets and not carelessly repeating something you heard are both ways of protecting your own credibility. It is also not wrong to take some distance in order to avoid conflict. But if the problem remains unresolved only because you continue avoiding it, there may eventually come a time when you need to face it.
Reversed relationships
When the Seven of Swords appears reversed in a relationship reading, true feelings or misunderstandings that had remained hidden are more likely to come to the surface. Even if it feels awkward at first, this can become an opportunity to organize what had been left unclear. In friendship, speaking about feelings you were unable to express may make the relationship easier. On the other hand, telling a third party someone's secret or spreading a rumor can damage trust. Within the family, talking about a problem you had been carrying alone may allow you to receive help. Some things are difficult to say precisely because you are family, but if you hide everything, the other person cannot understand the situation. Begin sharing little by little, starting with what you are able to say. In workplace and social relationships, slander, rumors, and unnecessary comments are more likely to become problems. It is important not only to avoid spreading them yourself, but also not to automatically believe what you hear. There may also come a point where you need to speak with someone you have been avoiding in order to prevent conflict. Rather than trying to solve everything at once, begin with a small conversation such as, "There is just one thing I'd like to clarify."
YES OR NO
Yes or No for Seven of Swords
Upright judgment
- Judgment
- It depends
- Reason
- The Seven of Swords can represent strategy and ingenuity, but also secrecy and lack of transparency. Progress may be possible, yet it is difficult to call the situation simply Yes or No while the approach remains indirect.
- What could change the answer
- The reading shifts toward Yes when necessary caution is maintained without hiding things that should be shared honestly. If avoidance, deception, or self-serving strategy increases, it shifts toward No.
Reversed judgment
- Judgment
- Yes
- Reason
- The Seven of Swords reversed can show hidden matters becoming visible, plans being reconsidered, and a move toward greater honesty. Problems may surface, but that very exposure creates room for improvement, so this is a cautious Yes.
- What could change the answer
- The Yes strengthens when facts are acknowledged, appropriate advice is accepted, and corrections are made honestly. If revealed problems are covered over with new excuses or avoidance, the reading shifts toward No.
MESSAGE FROM THE CARD
Advice from Seven of Swords
Upright
Perhaps you do not need to force your way through with strength alone right now. Stepping back to observe the situation, considering another route, or waiting for the right timing can all be valid choices. At the same time, check whether the method you are using is causing you to leave something important behind. Even if you avoid the immediate problem, if something continues to catch in your heart, the issue may not be completely finished. Using intelligence and deceiving yourself or someone else may look similar on the surface, but they are not the same. Choose a method that will allow you to look back later and still tell yourself, "This was the right way for me to handle it." The direct path is not the only correct one. Search for the way that suits your situation now, but do not forget the things that truly matter to you along the way.
Reversed
Until now, you may have been thinking alone and trying to find a way through by yourself. But it may be time to change your approach a little. If there is something you do not understand, ask someone you trust. If there is something you have not been able to say, try telling the necessary person only what they need to know. You do not have to reveal everything. At the same time, it is important not to treat someone else's secrets or rumors lightly. Words can build trust between people, but they can also destroy it. Choose carefully what you say and what you keep to yourself. Even if a hidden problem comes into view, that is not proof of failure. Because you can see it now, you still have a chance to correct it. Trying to get through everything alone is not the only form of intelligence. Accepting help, admitting something honestly, and saying what needs to be said can also be ways of using wisdom to move the situation forward.
